Description: Experiments to determine overall radiometric resolution are discussed. Scene structures, such as roads and field edges, are used with numerical estimation procedures to predict resolution in LANDSAT 4 Thematic Mapper imagery. A nominal resolution of 39 meters is determined rather than the predicted 30 meter prelaunch estimates.

Description: The problem of estimating the overall point-spread function (PSF) of multispectral scanner systems was studied using real scene data and known geometric structures in the scene. A direct solution to an approximate form of the PSF was made along with a method using the derivative of an estimated edge response. Both results agreed closely. The TM scanner system specifications are given in line-spread function width and these values are listed with the experimental results in terms of meters. The estimated values are very reasonable, considering the number of factors which could be influencing the result. The atmosphere will have a blurring effect on the overall PSF as well as on cubic convolution resampling effects and possible electronic effects not accounted for in the specification. Also, the specific definition of the LSF specification is not known nor is the actual altitude at the instant the data were acquired. Thus the nominal overall PSF half-amplitude width of 39 m is reasonable; however, a greater sample of scene objects should be evaluated to furthur verify this result.

Description: The radiometric quality of LANDSAT 4 TM data for the classification and identification of Earth surface features was evaluated. Techniques employed in the evaluation included clustering, data compression (linear transformations), multispectral distance measures, and hierarchical classification methods. TM and MSS data for the Chicago, Illinois test site were studied. In order to determine the radiometric quality of the TM thermal data for temperature mapping of surface water, a test site was selected within the area covered by the TM scene (Scene ID: 40101-16025) gathered over Illinois. This site was chosen because it includes a surface water body with a large range of temperatures, i.e., a cooling pond for the Dresden nuclear power plant and the junction of two rivers.

Description: A detailed spectral analysis is conducted of thematic mapper and MSS data for an area near Des Moines, Iowa. Data are utilized from 7 blocks distributed throughout the area which included agricultural, forest, suburan, urban, and water scene types. The blocks are processed using a clustering algorithm to produce up to 18 cluster groupings for each block. Each cluster class is then identified with a ground-cover class using aerial photography and maps of the area. The clusters from each of the 7 blocks are inspected with regard to separability, mean, and variances. The separability measure used in the transformed divergence function or processor measures the statistical distance between classes based on class means and covariance matrices. The measure has a maximum value of 2,000 and the minimum of 0. Spectrally, very close classes will typically have values as low as 50 to 500.

Description: The image sharpness problem is discussed in terms of a scene which is viewed by a sensor. The sensor has some sort of function which is a nonpoint observing function, and it's a function that gathers energy from some region around a point in the scene. That energy is integrated and is contributed to each point or each sample that is taken of the scene. The samples become the pixels, and the pixels are assembled together into the digital image. Each one has some blurr or some of what is called the point's spread function creating the value of information or data that is seen in each pixel. Then the sensor and electronic part of the system acts on that signal out of the sensor and perhaps adds more blurring, more loss of resolution to the system. Finally, sampling and quantization of the data produce their effects. The signal is sampled at some rate and the digital image is created from that. The sampling or digitizing process puts the continuous voltage into a number of discrete binary levels, and another error is introduced there.

Description: LANDSAT-4 thematic mapper (TM) and multispectral scanner (MSS) data were analyzed to obtain information on data quality and information content. Geometric evaluations were performed to test band-to-band registration accuracy. Thematic mapper overall system resolution was evaluated using scene objects which demonstrated sharp high contrast edge responses. Radiometric evaluation included detector relative calibration, effects of resampling, and coherent noise effects. Information content evaluation was carried out using clustering, principal components, transformed divergence separability measure, and supervised classifiers on test data. A detailed spectral class analysis (multispectral classification) was carried out to compare the information content of the MSS and TM for a large number of scene classes. A temperature-mapping experiment was carried out for a cooling pond to test the quality of thermal-band calibration. Overall TM data quality is very good. The MSS data are noisier than previous LANDSAT results.

Description: Algorithms and procedures necessary to merge aircraft synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and LANDSAT multispectral scanner (MSS) imagery were determined. The design of a SAR/LANDSAT data merging system was developed. Aircraft SAR images were registered to the corresponding LANDSAT MSS scenes and were the subject of experimental investigations. Results indicate that the registration of SAR imagery with LANDSAT MSS imagery is feasible from a technical viewpoint, and useful from an information-content viewpoint.

Description: Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS) data covering a three-county area in northern Illinois were classified using computer-aided techniques as corn, soybeans, or 'other.' Recognition of test fields was 80% accurate. County estimates of the area of corn and soybeans agreed closely with those made by the USDA. Results of the use of a priori information in classification, techniques to produce unbiased area estimates, and the use of temporal and spatial features for classification are discussed. The extendability, variability, and size of training sets, wavelength band selection, and spectral characteristics of crops were also investigated.

Description: A study was conducted with the objective to develop and evaluate various change detection techniques based upon computer-aided analysis of Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) data to monitor coastal zone environments. The study site selected includes a portion of the Matagorda Bay estuarine system located along the Texas Coast. The principal data sources for the study were MSS data collected on November, 27, 1972 and February 25, 1975. The MSS data were processed and a multidata eight-channel data set at a scale of 1:24,000 was obtained. A description is presented of four change detection techniques which were designed and implented for evaluation, taking into account postclassification comparison change detection, delta data change detection, spectral/temporal change classification, and layered spectral/temporal approach. The results of the investigation are discussed.
