    Notes: Abstract: We investigate the sequential cracking of thin brittle coatings attached adhesively to substrates. The focus of our study are uniaxial tensile loading conditions, where we monitor the behavior in a continuous picture and the coating strength follows a two-parameter Weibull distribution. For fracture well under way we derive an approximate analytical expression for the distribution of fragment lengths. We recover that the distribution scales with the average fragment length and that is a power function of the applied strain , i.e. , where depends on the distribution of the strength of the coating and on the adhesive's nonlinearity. Furthermore we compare our approximate analytical expression with numerical solutions and with simulations' findings.

    Notes: Conclusions Theoretical analysis and tests performed on rotors with composite shaft show that there is a sufficiently wide rotation stability region in the rotor parameter space despite comparatively high damping of a polymeric composite with respect to steel. Optimum parameters of the shaft (lay-up, thickness) and bearing (radial stiffness, damping) can be found within this region for each given rotor ensuring a low vibration level at critical frequencies. If rotor system parameters are far enough from the instability threshold, maximum vibration level is observed when rotor passes the first eigenfrequency zone. Further increase of rotation frequency leads to a rotor self-centering, and vibration level does not change passing the second eigenfrequency zone. The rotor response is not sensitive to small changes in rotor system parameters. If rotor system parameters are close to the instability threshold, vibration level at the second eigenfrequency dominates, and a small variation of bearing parameters causes significant changes in the vibration level.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of a short duration cyclic overload on the residual life and strength of laminated glass-fiber reinforced polyester is studied. A uniaxial tensile fatigue loading with the stress ratio 0.1 is considered. The residual life of the composite decreases due to the overload, while the residual strength is almost unaffected. A reasonable agreement of experimental data with the prediction by a residual strength model and by Miner's rule is observed.

    Notes: Abstract Degradation of the residual strength of a glass-fiber-reinforced polyester composite of a lay-up typical of the wind rotor blade material is studied at low-cycle fatigue. A gradual reduction of the residual strength is observed as expected for GRP, accompanied by an increasing scatter of strength. The residual strength model based on the strength-life equal rank assumption yields an accurate approximation of experimental data. The strength reduction at a stress level corresponding to high-cycle fatigue (N〉10 6 cycles) appears to correlate well with the test results at higher stress levels, which indicates that the strength degradation at the design stress level can be evaluated using low-cycle tests. Assuming that the parameters of the strength degradation model do not depend on the applied stress level, the residual strength data obtained in low stress level tests of comparatively short duration can be used to estimate the average fatigue life at the same stress thus reducing the total test time.

    Notes: Abstract Experimental results and theoretical prediction of the response of glassfiber-reinforced polyester under quasi-static, static (creep), and cyclic (fatigue) loading are presented. The nonlinear strain component at static loading and the strain amplitude rate at cyclic off-axis loading of an orthotropic composite are shown to follow the associated flow rule with a single-parameter quadratic potential function. The influence of fatigue damage on deformation is considerable due to the reduction in the elastic modulus of the composite and is apparently negligible with respect to its effect on the parameters of the creep kernel.

    Notes: Fragmentation tests in the uniaxial mode were performed on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films coated with a 100 nm thin silicon oxide layer. The coating's fragmentation process was analyzed in light of the mechanical behavior of the polymer substrate. It was shown that, upon unloading samples strained to less than 4% nominal strain, strain recovery leads to the closure of coating cracks. The usual fragmentation diagram, which shows the crack density (CD) versus applied strain, was used to identify the various energy dissipation mechanisms controlling the fragmentation process. An alternative presentation of CD versus true stress provided accurate measurements of both fragmentation and saturation onsets. The interfacial strength was modeled from the CD at saturation according to the Kelly-Tyson approach, including a Weibull distribution of the coating strength. The prediction was compared to the substrate shear stress at saturation. Effects of substrate yield, temperature, and molecular orientation are discussed. It was shown that the coating deposition by evaporation on the PET substrate did not induce structural changes at the polymer interface, whereas heat treatments increased the polymer crystallinity in the interfacial zone, resulting in higher interfacial strength. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The prediction was found to be independent of coating thickness, and equal to the substrate shear stress at saturation. The cohesive strength of the coating was characterized from the crack onset strain.
