Notes: [Auszug] How can we remember some information for many years, even after only a short experience of it? On page 66 of this issue, Engert and Bonhoeffer present evidence that when nerve cells receive an intense stream of impulses, they may form new structural and, perhaps, functional connections. Notes: Optimum performance of metal in the die casting shop in terms of metal loss, sludgegeneration, and high quality and consistency in mechanical properties of the die cast components are becoming increasingly important. In this context metal quality both from alloy producers’, die casters’ and end users’ perspectives is critical. The term metal quality can be defined to include 1) chemical composition, 2) inclusions and porosity inside the metal, 3) the surface appearance, and 4) consistency. This definition may apply to ingots as well as die cast parts. When the ingots areremelted and processed in the die casting shop, the effect of ingot surface quality and porosity on performance and properties is usually overshadowed by the quality of the processes in the die casting furnace. The paper discusses how the alloy gradually loses its pre-history. If the metal quality becomes inferior, housekeeping may become notoriously difficult, affecting important performance indicators such as up-time of operation and scrap rate. In partnership with the individual die casters, Hydro Magnesium offers assistance and audits to further improve the die caster’s performance and products

Notes: Abstract  A process for the manufacture of highly inorganically filled starch based fiber reinforced foam composites for food-packaging use is described. Starch, obtained from potato, corn, or other sources, is used as binder to form net shape foam composite substrates under hydrothermal conditions. The starch content is 25 to 60 wt. % of the product. Ground calcium carbonate is the principal inorganic material, being 25 to 60 wt. % of the product. The composite substrate is foamed by steam at temperatures between 160° and 220°C in a single 15 to 200 seconds step within heated molds. The organic-inorganic composite is reinforced with 5 to 20 wt. % wood or plant fiber. The substrate is rendered functional with food and beverages by thin overlay coatings that provide moisture barrier properties and additional mechanical flexibility. The product is used to package dry and wet foods and meets required food packaging standards. The substrate biodegrades rapidly in the presence of sufficient moisture or microbes. An environmental life-cycle model and an economic model are described as the additional forces to a materials model for research, development and commercialization. The primary goal of this development is to provide disposable packaging materials from renewable resources that are low in cost, low in environmental impact, and meet commercial performance requirements.

Description: In spring 2016, two silos containing liquid nitrogen-containing fertilizer collapsed on a harbor in Fredericia, Denmark. More than 2,750 tons of fertilizer spilled into inner Danish waters. A bloom of Pseudo-nitzschia occurred approximately one month after the incident. The bloom caused a 5-week quarantine of numerous mussel-harvesting areas along the eastern coast of Jutland. The levels of domoic acid measured up to 49 mg kg−1 in mussel meat after the bloom. In the months following the event, the species diversity of phytoplankton was low, while the abundance was high comprising few dominant species including Pseudo-nitzschia. The main part of the liquid nitrogen-containing compound was urea, chemically produced for agricultural use. To investigate the potential impact of urea on Pseudo-nitzschia, four strains, including one strain of P. delicatissima, two of P. seriata and one of P. obtusa, were exposed each to three concentrations of urea in a batch culture experiment: 10 μM, 20 μM and 100 μM N urea, and for comparison one concentration of nitrate (10 μM). Nitrate, ammonium, and urea were metabolized at different rates. Pseudo-nitzschia obtusa produced domoic acid and grew best at low urea concentrations. Both P. seriata strains had a positive correlation between urea concentration and growth rate, and the highest growth rate in the nitrate treatment. One strain of P. seriata produced domoic acid peaking at low N loads (10 µM N urea and 10 µM N nitrate). In conclusion, the ability to adapt to the available nitrogen source and retain a high growth rate was exceedingly varying and not only species-specific but also strain specific.
