    Notes: Abstract Callus cultures of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) genotypes PI 88788, PI 438489B, and cultivar Bedford were initiated in vitro from seedling explants consisting of the cotyledonary node plus epicotyl from germinated mature seed. Plants were regenerated from these callus cultures and subsequently evaluated for qualitative variation in three to four subsequent generations. Variant phenotypes observed that have not been previously reported from tissue culture include lanceolate leaves, leaf variegation (chimeral variegated plants), pod variegation on otherwise normal plants, and change in growth habit from indeterminate to determinate. The lanceolate leaf, chimeral variegated plant, and change from indeterminate to determinate growth habit characters were inherited through at least three generations (R0-R2), and segregation occurred in each generation. Pod variegation was inherited through the two generations tested thus far and segregation occurred in each generation. No variation was observed in control plants derived from normal seed. Variants appeared more frequently in regenerants from PI 88788 and PI 438489B than from Bedford. These results confirm and extend the finding that certain tissue culture techniques may be used to induce novel plant formation from somatic tissue of soybean.

    Notes: Abstract Six sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris L.) lines (GWI-248, SPB-11, MonoHy 55, SMS-1, EL45 and FC607) were tested for regeneration. Shoot cultures were initiated in vitro from naked, sterilized embryos obtained from mature seed. Excised petioles from cultured shoots were plated on Gamborg's B5 medium and four modified Murashige and Skoog (MS) media. A medium containing MS inorganic salts supplemented with 0.4 mg/1 N6-benzyladenine, 0.1 mg/1 indole-3-butyric acid, ten vitamins and six amino acids, termed RV, was superior for both adventitious shoot and callus formation. Callus was observed only on RV medium and only on petioles that did not develop adventitious buds directly. Rooting of regenerated shoots and development of complete plants was accomplished by transfer to Gamborg's B5 medium with 5 mg/l indole-3-butyric acid as the sole phytohormone. The complete process of regeneration through adventitious shoot production took from 4 to 6 weeks from explants to rooted plants. The callus that formed on nonorganogenic petioles was regenerative when transferred to fresh RV medium. Regeneration from callus occurred mainly by shoot organogenesis but also by somatic embryogenesis at a low frequency.

    Description / Table of Contents: Übersicht Es wird eine „finite element”-Methode vorgeschlagen zur Berechnung zweidimensionaler elastischplastischer Baukonstruktionen, die einem ebenen Spannungszustand mit monoton wachsender Last unterworfen sind. Das Belastungs-Verformungs-Verhalten und die Ausbreitung der Fließbereiche bis zum plastischen Zusammenbruch werden untersucht. Das Material soll der Fließbedingung von Tresca genügen. Spannungs-Verformungs-Berechnungen für die Ränder und Ecken des Tresca-Bereiches werden in Komponenten der Spannungen und Dehnungen längs der Achsriclitungen eines festen Bezugssystems und der Hauptspannungsrichtungen ausgedrückt. Die Belastung wird in kleinen Stufen aufgebracht, und die Hauptspannungsrichtungen werden für jedes plastische Teilchen während des Lastaufbringens durch Interpolation bestimmt. Die so erhaltenen Spannungen genügen der Fließbedingung. Durch numerische Beispiele wird die Genauigkeit des vorgeschlagenen Verfahrens demonstriert.
    Notes: Summary A finite element technique for the elastic-plastic analysis of two dimensional structures subjected to conditions of plane stress and monotonically increasing loads is presented. The complete load deformation history as well as the propagation of the yield zones in the structure up to plastic collapse are studied. The material is assumed to be elastic-perfectly plastic and yielding is governed by Tresca yield condition. Plastic stress-strain relations for the sides and corners of Tresca yield condition are derived in terms of the components of the stresses and strains along a fixed reference coordinate system and the direction of the principal stress. The load is applied in small increments and the principal stress direction for each plastic element during a load increment is determined by an interpolation technique which leads to stresses that satisfy the yield condition. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the accuracy of the results obtained by the proposed method.

    Notes: Abstract Genetics of resistance to soybean cyst nematode (SCN), Heterodera glycines Ichinohe is very complex. Crosses involving PI 437654, which is resistant to all races of cyst nematodes with other sources of resistance (Peking, PI 88788, and PI 90763) indicated that resistance to race 3 was controlled by four genes, two of which were dominant resistance genes and the other two were recessive resistance genes. For race 5, a four gene model with two recessive and two dominant resistance genes in epistasis has been proposed. For race 14, the results suggested a three gene model with one dominant and two recessive alleles. Several other plant introductions have been isolated which have different genes conditioning resistance. Most of the currently grown soybean varieties derived resistance from Peking and/or PI 88788. Resistance to SCN in these soybean varieties has broken down because of the emergence of several new races and populations of SCN. The use of PI 437654 or Hartwig and other plant introductions with different genes for resistance will broaden genetic diversity and stabilize yield.

    Notes: Summary Twenty-two promising wheat varieties were studied for their plant height, length of filament, size of anther, number of pollen grains/anther and the extent of pollen shed outside the florets. Plant height and length of filament ranged from 54 cm to 136 cm and 4.5 mm to 11.9 mm, respectively. Taller plants showed a tendency to longer filaments. The number of pollen grains/anther varied from 581 to 2153. This character was particularly correlated with plant height. Tall varieties with more pollen grain/anther shed greater quantities of pollen outside the florets. This was due to longer filaments of most of the tall varieties. The size of anther was also positively correlated with pollen grain/anther.

    Notes: Summary The objectives of this study were to determine if genes for resistance to soybean cyst nematode (SCN) in soybean PI 437654 were identical or different from the genes in Peking, and PI 90763. The F2 plants and F3 families were studied from crosses between PI 437654, Peking, and PI 90763. The cross PI 437654 × susceptible Essex was included to determine inheritance of resistance to SCN. For Race 3, PI 437654 was found to have genes in common with Peking and PI 90763. The segregation in PI 437654 × Essex indicated the presence of one dominant and two recessive genes. For Race 5, PI 437654 indicated the presence of similar genes as those in PI 90763 and Peking whereas, PI 437654 × Essex indicated the action of the segregation ratios of two dominant and two recessive genes. For Race 14, the data from the cross PI 437654 × PI 90763 indicated monogenic inheritance with resistance being dominant; whereas PI 437654 × Peking showed a recessive gene controlling resistance. The segregation in PI 437654(R) × Essex(S) suggested one dominant and two recessive genes for Race 14 reaction.

    Notes: Abstract Finite element stress analysis has been applied to examine the stress patterns in a prosthesis requiring fixation in the medullary shaft of a long bone. No specific prosthesis is considered but rather a generally applicable geometry has been chosen. This consists of a cylindrical section of cortical bone within which is implanted a prosthesis composed of a solid central rod surrounded by a porous coating. The finite element analysis utilized an axisymmetric model to determine the distribution of stresses throughout the system. The effect of changes in length of prosthesis, thickness of porous coating, depth and type of tissue ingrowth, and type of porous coating material were studied under conditions of axisymmetric loading. The results indicate that with complete bone ingrowth, the maximum shear stress and the distance necessary for load transfer are both independent of implant length. However, with incomplete ingrowth, increasing implant length reduces shear. Incomplete growth also produces lower shear stresses but higher shear strains in areas without ingrowth. In addition, a porous polyethylene coating gives a more even load transfer and lower shear than a porous coating of a high modulus material.
