    Abstract: This contributed volume presents an analysis of the current conservation status of major faunal groups in Mexico. The chapters describe a prognosis of future challenges, and also explore the expanding threats inherent in the Anthropocene within the context of the unique physical, biological and cultural aspects of the nation. Covering 27 chapters, and written by Mexican and international authors, this book analyzes a wide range of vertebrate and invertebrate animal taxa, their ecosystems and the critical processes related to their present conservation status.     Notes: Abstract We have investigated the genome organization in the flatworm Schistosoma mansoni. First, we analyzed the compositional distributions of the three codon positions. Second, we investigated the correlations that exist between (1) the GC levels of exons against flanking regions, (2) the GC levels of third codon positions against flanking regions, (3) the dinucleotide frequencies of exons against flanking regions, and (4) the GC levels of 5′ against 3′ regions. The modality of the distribution of third codon positions, together with the significant correlations found, leads us to propose that the nuclear genome of this species is compositionally compartmentalized.

    Notes: Abstract We report the analysis of the biases of CpG, TpG, and CpA of all the DNA sequences data from the Trematode Schistosoma mansoni. Our results show CpG avoidance whereas TpG and CpA frequencies are over the expected values. These characteristics are similar to the biases displayed by methylated genomes, but in platyhelminths 5mC has not been detected by biochemical methods. The possible implications of this CpG shortage are discussed.

    Notes: We report optical gaps for ab initio generated random networks of silicon–nitrogen alloys, a-SiNx, for thirteen values of x from 0 to x=1.29, a nearly stoichiometric composition. The random networks were constructed by amorphizing 64-atom periodically-continued diamond-like cells containing silicon and nitrogen, with a new thermal process and a Harris-functional based molecular dynamics code in the local density approximation. The electron energy levels were then calculated and the optical gaps obtained using a Tauc-like procedure that is not sensitive to gap states and band tails. Our results agree with experiment. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract C-banded karyotypes, DNA content and the male meiiotic process ofTriatoma platensis andTriatoma delpontei are compared with those ofTriatoma infestans, the main vector of Chagas disease in South America. These three species present the same diploid chromosome number 2n=22 (20 autosomes+XX♂/XY♀). They also have several cytogenetic traits that differ from all other triatomines: large autosomes, C-heterochromatic blocks and meiotic heteropycnotic chromocenters formed by autosomes and sex chromosomes. In spite of these similarities, each species presents different chromosomal behavior during male meiosis, distinct DNA content and a specific amount and localization of the C-heterochromatin. The differences in DNA content are mainly due to the variation in C-heterochromatin amount, which may be interpreted as loss and/or gain of C-regions. This interpretation is supported by the presence of meiotic and mitotic chromocenters that facilitate the transference of C-positive material. The cytogenetic data presented in this work suggest thatT. infestans andT. platensis are more closely related to each other than toT. delpontei. It can also be inferred that the differences in distribution and amount of heterochromatin do not play a direct role in speciation in this group.

    Notes: Abstract Electronic properties of lamotrigine (LTG) and two analogues (A1 and A2) are compared through MOPAC-AM1 calculations. Two stable conformers of LTG are calculated to exist in agreement with X-ray crystallography. In the three compounds and the two conformers for each of them, the more favorable protonation sites are N2 and N4; these should then be the sites appropriate for interaction with a receptor, and group valence reinforces the supposition. The molecular electrostatic potentials show that a region between the two chlorine atoms in LTG could be the site for an electrostatic interaction with a corresponding site in the receptor. The fluorine atom in A1 would play an equivalent role. A simple model for LTG-receptor interaction is proposed.

    Notes: Abstract Through the use of principal components analysis of the correlation matrix between excentricity quotients of intra- and inter-individual transitions between pairs of the 22 most frequent behaviour elements of male and female gelada baboons observed in captivity, the total variance could be described in terms of a low number of causal factors. In intra-individual sequences the five factors requested of the analysis explain 74 per cent of the total variance. The following intra-individual groupings were found: (I) “autostimulation”, (II) “intensive social” versus “groom”, (III) “male sexual”, (IV) “attack” versus “sexual presentation”, and (V) “greeting” versus “threat”. In inter-individual transitions, the five factors explain 68 per cent of the variance. The following communicative sets were found: (1) “female-sexual releasing”, (2) “greeting and approaching releasing” versus “groom releasing”, (3) “austostimulation releasing” versus “male-sexual releasing”, (4) “fight releasing”, and (5) “conflict”. Mimetic induction of same acts or acts within one particular intra-individual set was frequent.

    Notes: Abstract Observation conditions were very influential in determining the social distance among members of groups of squirrel monkeys. With observer visible to the animals and recording by talking into a tape recorder the monkeys did not show a consistent pattern of social distance as reflected by actual space and frequency of bodily contacts, whereas when the observer was concealed, looking through a one-way vision screen and recording silently by marking on paper, the subjects tended to group in unisexual clusters, with that of the females showing higher cohesiveness.

    Notes: Abstract Daily examination of five adult female gelada baboons (Theropithecus gelada) exhibiting menstruation discharges showed noncyclic changes in the coloration of the bare areas of skin in throat, chest, and pubic areas. The intensity of red color in these areas were, on the other hand, markedly affected by the social context (bouts of threats or fights generally heighten the intensity of red) and by sickness or injury (generally lessening color intensity). The features showing most marked cyclic variations were color and degree of swellings of the cutaneous vesicles present around the chest and ventral patches, the intensity of both increasing in the middle of the menstrual cycle and descending as menstruation approaches, to gain intensity again a few days after cessation of the discharges. Of these two features vesicle color appears to be more sensitive to the hormonal changes underlying the variations.

    Notes: Abstract Under different criteria the individual members of groups of squirrel monkeys show different social capacities. The ranking of the subjects was much the same for Restraining and Genital display. The hierarchies for Approaching and Following fitted well with each other, showing few similarities with the above two. Location of individual ranks for Withdrawing tended to be the opposite to that of Approaching and Following. Restraining and Genital display showed quasi-linear hierarchies, with males on top and females at the bottom of them. For Approaching, Following, Withdrawing, and Genital inspection the results varied from quasi-linear structure to circular or even unisexual arrangement. As a rule the animals behaved towards partners close in rank to themselves. Several individual roles could be isolated: An alpha male role, directing Restraining and Genital display to all other partners more frequently than any of them towards him, basing his ability more in adequate distribution of total performance among social partners than in high total frequency; an omega male role under the same criteria, whose function would be to connect with the hierarchy of females and a scapegoat role, a very passive female receiving all kinds of attention from most subjects.
