Notes: Contents The boundary integral equation method is applied to permeance computation. Results obtained cover typical practical cases: permeance between parallel ferromagnetic prisms and permeance between parallel ferromagnetic prism and cylinder. The approach proposed and the results obtained can be used in the design of electromagnetic systems.

Notes: Abstract Effects of D2O were studied on internodal cells of the freshwater alga Nitellopsis obtusa under plasmalemma perfusion (tonoplast-free cells) with voltage clamp, and on Ca2+ channels isolated from the alga and reconstituted in bilayer lipid membranes (BLM). External application of artificial pond water (APW) with D2O as the solvent to the perfused plasmalemma preparation led to an abrupt drop of membrane resistance (R m = 0.12 ±0.03 kΩ · cm2), thus preventing further voltage clamping. APW with 25% D2O caused a two-step reduction of R m : first, down to 2.0 ± 0.8 kΩ · cm2, and then further to 200 Ω · cm2, in 2 min. It was shown that in the first stage, Ca2+ channels are activated, and then, Ca2+ ions entering through them activate the Cl− channels. The Ca2+ channels are activated irreversibly. If 100 mm CsCl was substituted for 200 mm sucrose (introduced for isoosmoticity), no effect of D2O on R m was observed. Intracellular H2O/D2O substitution also did not change R m . In experiments on single Ca2+ channels in BLM H2O/ D2O substitution in a solution containing 100 mm KCl (trans side) produced no effect on channel activity, while in 10 mm KCl, at negative voltage, the open channel probability sharply increased. This effect was irreversible. The single channel conductance was not altered after the H2O/D2O substitution. The discussion of the possible mechanism of D2O action on Ca2+ and Cl− channels was based on an osmotic-like stress effect and the phenomenon of higher D-bond energy compared to the H-bond.

Notes: Abstract Applying the canonical transformation with the 1/λ perturbation expansion in the nonadiabatic and intermediate regime and the discrete generalization of Pekar’s continuous nonlinear equation in the extreme adiabatic regime, we show that there are no strings in narrow-band ionic insulators due to the Fröhlich electron-phonon interaction alone. The multipolaron system is a homogeneous state in a wide range of physically interesting parameters, no matter how strong the correlations are. At the same time, the Fröhlich interaction allows the antiferromagnetic interactions and/or short-range electron-phonon interactions to form short strings in doped antiferromagnetic insulators if the static dielectric constant is large enough.

Notes: An exchange interaction of polaronic carriers with localized spins leads to a new ferromagnetic transition in doped charge-transfer insulators with strong electron–phonon coupling. The relative strength of the exchange and electron–phonon interactions determines whether the transition is first or second order. A giant drop in the number of current carriers during the transition, which is a consequence of bipolaron formation in the paramagnetic phase, is extremely sensitive to an external magnetic field. We show that the carrier density collapse describes the colossal magnetoresistance, anomalous specific heat, and tunneling gap of doped manganites close to the transition. The dependence of the binding energy on ion mass explains the giant isotope effect in magnetization and resistivity upon substitution of 16O by 18O. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We calculate the value of the Fröhlich electron-phonon interaction in manganites, cuprates, and some other charge-transfer insulators and show that this interaction (∼1 eV) is much stronger than any relevant magnetic interaction. This suggests that carriers in those systems are small (bi)polarons at all temperatures and doping levels, in agreement with the oxygen isotope effect and other data. As these materials are cooled below the Curie temperature, the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) is accompanied by a massive transfer of the spectral weight of the optical conductivity to lower frequencies. As with the CMR itself, this change in the optical conductivity is explained by the dissociation of bipolarons into small polarons by the exchange interaction with localized Mn spins during the transition. The corresponding current carrier density collapse in doped manganites leads to a colossal change of the optical conductivity in an external magnetic field at temperatures close to the ferromagnetic transition, in agreement with available experimental observations. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
