Description: At present time, there is a lack of knowledge on the interannual climate-related variability of zooplankton communities of the tropical Atlantic, central Mediterranean Sea, Caspian Sea, and Aral Sea, due to the absence of appropriate databases. In the mid latitudes, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is the dominant mode of atmospheric fluctuations over eastern North America, the northern Atlantic Ocean and Europe. Therefore, one of the issues that need to be addressed through data synthesis is the evaluation of interannual patterns in species abundance and species diversity over these regions in regard to the NAO. The database has been used to investigate the ecological role of the NAO in interannual variations of mesozooplankton abundance and biomass along the zonal array of the NAO influence. Basic approach to the proposed research involved: (1) development of co-operation between experts and data holders in Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, UK, and USA to rescue and compile the oceanographic data sets and release them on CD-ROM, (2) organization and compilation of a database based on FSU cruises to the above regions, (3) analysis of the basin-scale interannual variability of the zooplankton species abundance, biomass, and species diversity.

Notes: Abstract A survey of recent bottom sediments in the Northern Aral Sea was undertaken to elucidate the main direction of the alteration of sedimentation processes as a result of the significant decrease in the level of the sea from the beginning of the 1960s. Investigations were carried out in August–September 1991 from on board helicopter MI-8 MTV-1 which was equipped with the navigation system “LORAN-OMEGA”. Sediments were sampled by means of gravity coring and grab sampling. The frequency of sampling was about 1 station per 10 km2. At several sites, water samples were collected. Grain-size analysis was undertaken and the mineralogy of the sediments was determined by optical means, using an SEM energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis, and X-ray diffractometry using a DRON-2.0 diffractometer.

Notes: Abstract Salt and water balance in the Aral Sea are described together with the endemic fauna and flora which were mainly of freshwater origin. During the last thirty years the fauna and flora have undergone dramatic changes due partly to a great increase in salinity as the result of water abstraction from the inflowing rivers and partly as the result of the deliberate and accidental introduction of a wide variety of marine invertebrates and fishes. The increased salinity has eliminated most the species of freshwater origin while many of endemic saline species have been lost as the result of competition with the marine ones. Changes in productivity are described and future prospects for the sea are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Seven of the largest lakes in central Asia (former USSR) are saline: Caspian Sea, Aral Sea, lakes Balkhash, Issyk-Kul, the Chany complex, Alakul and Tengiz. They range in salinity from sometimes 〈 3 g l−1 to 19 g l−1. The paper provides a summary review of their major physico-chemical and biological features. Several are threatened by activities in their drainage basins, particularly diversion of inflowing waters.

Notes: Abstract Results of five expeditions to the Caspian Sea and 17 expeditions to the Aral Sea from 1976–1993 are presented. In these two large salt lakes, nine species of Podonidae were found, all of which were fairly euryhaline, except Caspievadne maximowitschi. Further, all of them were thermophilic, except Cornigerius bicornis, Caspievadne maximowitschi, and Pleopis polyphemoides. Sexual reproduction of the Podonidae in these two salt lakes appears to be insignificant. The possibility exists that parthenogenetic females of some species can live and reproduce even during the winter in the southern parts of the lakes. The complete disappearance of the Podonidae from the Aral Sea in 1989–1990 and the later reappearance of Podonevadne camptonyx in the north Aral in 1991, demonstrates that today it is possible to rehabilitate and conserve a small part of this lake.

Notes: Abstract Data on benthic macroinvertebrates of the northern Caspian Sea in 1980–1991 were collected by the Caspian Fishery Research Institute. During the initial period of the water-level rise, the main trends in benthic macroinvertebrates were increases in the biomass of the main groups and decreases in the relative abundance of species of Mediterranean origin. There was no significant alteration in species composition. The increased abundance was due to improved trophic conditions and a decrease in the numbers of benthos-feeding fish. Some decrease in the relative abundance of species of marine origin was related to a decrease in water salinity.
