    Description: Stand-alone/grid connected renewable energy systems (RESs) require direct current (DC)/DC converters with continuous-input continuous-output current capabilities as maximum power point tracking (MPPT) converters. The continuous-input current feature minimizes the extracted power ripples while the continuous-output current offers non-pulsating power to the storage batteries/DC-link. CUK, D1 and D2 DC/DC converters are highly competitive candidates for this task especially because they share similar low-component count and functionality. Although these converters are of high resemblance, their performance assessment has not been previously compared. In this paper, a detailed comparison between the previously mentioned converters is carried out as several aspects should be addressed, mainly the converter tracking efficiency, conversion efficiency, inductor loss, system modelling, transient and steady-state performance. First, average model and dynamic analysis of the three converters are derived. Then, D1 and D2 small signal analysis in voltage-fed-mode is originated and compared to that of CUK in order to address the nature of converters’ response to small system changes. Finally, the effect of converters’ inductance variation on their performance is studied using rigorous simulation and experimental implementation under varying operating conditions. The assessment finally revels that D1 converter achieves the best overall efficiency with minimal inductor value.

    Notes: Abstract. Scene change detection (SCD) is one of several fundamental problems in the design of a video database management system (VDBMS). It is the first step towards the automatic segmentation, annotation, and indexing of video data. SCD is also used in other aspects of VDBMS, e.g., hierarchical representation and efficient browsing of the video data. In this paper, we provide a taxonomy that classifies existing SCD algorithms into three categories: full-video-image-based, compressed-video-based, and model-based algorithms. The capabilities and limitations of the SCD algorithms are discussed in detail. The paper also proposes a set of criteria for measuring and comparing the performance of various SCD algorithms. We conclude by discussing some important research directions.

    Notes: Summary Digoxin therapy has been made more rational by the measurement of serum digoxin concentrations. However, difficulties remain because of the overlap between “therapeutic” and “toxic” serum concentrations and the lack of an obvious therapeutic endpoint in many patients. An assay which measures the degree of interaction between digoxin and its putative receptor, the membrane Na+, K+-ATPase, might be capable of resolving some of these difficulties. Therefore, as a first approach in this direction we evaluated the relationship between serum digoxin concentration and the degree of inhibition of RBC ghost Na+, K+-ATPase activity in patients receiving digoxin therapy. Utilizing an improved micro-assay technique, Na+, K+-ATPase activity was determined in aliquots of RBC ghosts before and after removal of bound digoxin. In 27 patients a significant relationship was present between serum digoxin concentration and the degree of RBC ghost Na+,K+-ATPase inhibition. However, at any serum digoxin concentration, there was a variation in the magnitude of enzyme inhibition from patient to patient. This study confirms the feasibility of determining the degree of in vivo RBC Na+,K+-ATPase inhibition in man and demonstrates, for the first time, a highly significant but somewhat variable relationship between serum digoxin concentrations and the magnitude of RBC digoxin receptor inactivation. This quantitative, functional, individualized assay of digoxin effects may prove to be of clinical value in the future.

    Notes: Abstract Replication is useful in multidatabase systems (MDBSs) because, as in traditional distributed database systems, it increases data availability in the presence of failures and decreases data retrieval costs by reading local or close copies of data. Concurrency control, however, is more difficult in replicated MDBSs than in ordinary distributed database systems. This is the case not only because local concurrency controllers may schedule global transactions inconsistently, but also because local transactions (at different sites) may access the same replicated data. In this article, we propose a decentralized concurrency control protocol for a replicated MDBS. The proposed strategy supports prompt and consistent updates of replicated data by both local and global applications without a central coordinator.

    Notes: Abstract This article presents a theoretical basis for global concurrency control to maintain global serializability in multidatabase systems. Three correctness criteria are formulated that utilize the intrinsic characteristics of global transactions to determine the serialization order of global subtransactions at each local site. In particular, two new types of serializability, chain-conflicting serializability and sharing serializability, are proposed and hybrid serializability, which combines these two basic criteria, is discussed. These criteria offer the advantage of imposing no restrictions on local sites other than local serializability while retaining global serializability. The graph testing techniques of the three criteria are provided as guidance for global transaction scheduling. In addition, an optimal property of global transactions for determinating the serialization order of global subtransactions at local sites is formulated. This property defines the upper limit on global serializability in multidatabase systems.

    Notes: Abstract. Providing content-based video query, retrieval and browsing is the most important goal of a video database management system (VDBMS). Video data is unique not only in terms of its spatial and temporal characteristics, but also in the semantic associations manifested by the entities present in the video. This paper introduces a novel video data model called Logical Hypervideo Data Model. In addition to multilevel video abstractions, the model is capable of representing video entities that users are interested in (defined as hot objects) and their semantic associations with other logical video abstractions, including hot objects themselves. The semantic associations are modeled as video hyperlinks and video data with such property are called hypervideo. Video hyperlinks provide a flexible and effective way of browsing video data. Based on the proposed model, video queries can be specified with both temporal and spatial constraints, as well as with semantic descriptions of the video data. The characteristics of hot objects' spatial and temporal relations and efficient evaluation of them are also discussed. Some query examples are given to demonstrate the expressiveness of the video data model and query language. Finally, we describe a modular video database system architecture that our web-based prototype is based on.
