    Notes: Abstract Yeasts were isolated from twelve established sites in the North Sea from 1964 to 1966. A percentage frequency of 99% with populations varying from 〈10 to 〉3000 viable cells/L was observed. This mycota was characterized by considerable spatial and temporal fluctuation, with the dominant yeast present being the ascosporogenous species, Debaryomyces hansenii. This taxon, as well as other common North Sea yeasts, e.g., Rhodotorula rubra and Candida diddensii, have been reported frequently from other marine locales. Noteworthy concentrations of yeasts, especially D. hansenii, were observed during summer months, often in association with various stages of development of the dinoflagellate, Noctiluca miliaris. The population dynamics of the North Sea yeasts are discussed in relation to similar studies of other marine environments.

    Notes: Abstract Mycological investigations, entailing over 400 samples from 120 separate collection stations, of the composite aquatic regions of southern Florida and adjacent areas have been developed. A collection of over 1000 yeasts, representing more than 50 taxa, has been characterized and studied. Highest yeast densities were found in freshwaters with the recovery of yeasts per sample decreasing from 100% to approximately 70% with lowered organic content, increasing salinity and remoteness from land. Average cell population densities, variety of species, and particularly the number of sexual yeasts, decreased in saline samples. The isolation media used were evaluated and have been discussed in terms of yeast densities obtained. Stritly oxidative species of Candida, Cryptococcus, and Rhodotorula and the sexual yeast, Debaryomyces hansenii, were the most widespread in all the habitas studied and the predominant forms in water of relatively low organic content. Selective survival of certain yeasts in the various aquatic environments was suggested. Definite distributional patterns were exhibited by various taxa and the possible existence of “indicator” species wa suggested. The systematics of the fungi have been reviewed at length and the significance of strain differences considered and discussed as related to the unique characteristics of the various ecological habitats.

    Notes: Abstract Selected yeasts classified as Candida sake van Uden et Buckley were examined for their physiological, morphological and immunological properties and their DNA relatedness. Candida maltosa Komagata, Nakase et Katsuya is herein recognized as a species separate from C. sake. Candida maltosa was distinguished from C. sake and from C. tropicalis by insignificant DNA reassociation. In addition, C. maltosa was distinguished from C. sake by its higher maximal growth temperature and lower guanine plus cytosine content of its DNA and from C. tropicalis by its failure to utilize soluble starch for growth and its resistance to cycloheximide. The species C. cloacae and C. subtropicalis are placed in synonymy with C. maltosa.

    Notes: Summary Materials being used or considered for use in space flight were examined for their susceptibility to fungal colonization. The materials included soft goods (clothing) and insulation and fabrication products such as Velcro® attachments and elastic cord binders. Materials were exposed for at least 28 days in a highhumidity chamber colonized with over 50 species of fungi, including those species recommended for determining recalcitrance of materials to fungal biodegradation. At least nine of 25 products demonstrated extensive microscopic colonization by fungi, mostly byAcremonium obclavatum. Challenge procedures that rely on observations with the unaided eye, or 40×magnification of growth by a restricted number of fungal species with a cellulosic substrate as a positive control, are insufficient for determining the resistance of synthetic substrates to fungal colonization.

    Notes: The production of mycotoxins by Alternaria alternata in cellulosic ceiling tiles was examined with thin-layer chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography procedures. Alternariol and alternariol monomethyl ether were found in ceiling tile extracts, whereas extracts of control rice cultures of all three isolates produced these mycotoxins plus altenuene and altertoxin I. Extensive fungal growth and mycotoxin production occurred in the ceiling tiles at relative humidities of 84–89% and 97%.

    Notes: Isolates of Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus fumigatus from indoor air were compared with a known mycotoxin producer for their capacity to produce mycotoxins on a variety of enrichment media and with growth on indoor substrates such as ceiling tile and wall board. In enrichment media, four of seven isolates of A. flavus produced at least one aflatoxin and both isolates of A. fumigatus produced mycotoxins. The spectrum of mycotoxins and their concentrations varied with the strain and medium. When the mycotoxin-positive strains were grown to a dense concentration on indoor construction and finishing materials such as ceiling tile and wall boards, mycotoxins were not detected in extracts of the materials. Colonization of indoor surfaces by mycotoxin-producing strains of A. flavus and A. fumigatus may not necessarily expose inhabitants to mycotoxins or result in production of mycotoxins.

    Notes: Summary Two chemically distinct types of hydrogel lenses, vifilcon A and bufilcon A, each with a water content of 55%, were challenged in a balanced salts solution withAspergillus fumigatus, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Curvularia lunata andFusarium solani. The lenses were cleaned, disinfected and stained after varying periods of incubation and examined with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. For three of the four fungi, the bufilcon A lens was more susceptible to fungal attack than the vifilcon A lens.Curv. lunata produced the greatest number of penetration pegs within 72 h for both lens types. Etching of lens surfaces was observed withC. cladosporioides. In general, the susceptibility of a hydrogel lens to penetration with a fungus appeared to vary with the species of fungus and the chemical composition of the lens.

These same organisms demonstrated enhanced adherence to an Ion-Beam-Assisted-Deposited silver surface followed by loss of viability.
