Description: Segmented reflectors have been proposed for space-based applications such as optical communication and large-diameter telescopes. An actuation system for mirrors in a space-based segmented mirror array has been developed as part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration-sponsored Precision Segmented Reflector program. The actuation system, called the Articulated Panel Module (APM), articulates a mirror panel in 3 degrees of freedom in the submicron regime, isolates the panel from structural motion, and simplifies space assembly of the mirrors to the reflector backup truss. A breadboard of the APM has been built and is described. Three-axis modeling, analysis, and testing of the breadboard is discussed.

Description: POINTS is a high-precision, high-throughput interferometer intended for astromomy only. It can perform science compatable with astrophysics (AIM) and planet detection (TOPS-1). The spacecraft will be compact, lightweight, and suitable for high Earth orbit. It will employ the minimal number and complexity of mechanisms or deployable parts and be designed for a 10 year mission life.

Description: Micromachined, closed-loop, electrostatically actuated reflectors (microCLEARs) provide relatively simple and inexpensive alternatives to large, complex, expensive adaptive optics used to control wavefronts of beams of light in astronomy and in experimental laser weapons. Micromachining used to make deformable mirror, supporting structure, and actuation circuitry. Development of microCLEARs may not only overcome some of disadvantages and limitations of older adaptive optics but may also satisfy demands of potential market for small, inexpensive deformable mirrors in electronically controlled film cameras, video cameras, and other commercial optoelectronic instruments.

Description: Mechanism suspends optical component in cryogenic instrument in such way to allow component to translate smoothly along one axis, without vibration. Bearings located outside cooled instrument chamber for longer life. Thermal isolators separate bearings from cryogenic environment inside instrument chamber.

Description: Proposed dynamic torque calibration unit (DTCU) measures torque in rotary actuator components such as motors, bearings, gear trains, and flex couplings. Unique because designed specifically for testing components under low rates. Measures torque in device under test during controlled steady rotation or oscillation. Rotor oriented vertically, supported by upper angular-contact bearing and lower radial-contact bearing that floats axially to prevent thermal expansion from loading bearings. High-load capacity air bearing available to replace ball bearings when higher load capacity or reduction in rate noise required.

Description: Proposed actuation system maintains alignments of reflector segments of large telescope. Sensors measure positions and orientations of segments. Figure-control computer calculates orientation and figure of overall reflector surface from sensor data. Responding to computer output, servocontroller for each actuator corrects piston and tilt errors of each segment. Actuators adjust segments in response to sensed positions. Concept applicable to such large segmented space-based reflectors as those used in communication and in collection of solar energy.
