The Niger Delta serves as the economic nerve centre of the Nigeria Federation with its vast oil deposits. However the question is how far has the coastal fisheries thrived in the Niger delta since the discovery of crude oil? Fishing is the predominant occupation in the coastal communities. The Niger Delta is home to Nigeria’s oil industry. However, this ‘blessing’ has become a challenge for the people of the Niger Delta. They have suffered environmental devastation, economic poverty, and constant conflict. This paper discusses issues and challenges facing fisheries development in Niger-Delta area of Nigeria.
