Notes: [Auszug] ...Leonard Mandel, one of the founding fathers of quantum optics, died at his home on 9 February at the age of 73. Our generation of optical scientists grew up learning from Mandel's work: quite literally, he showed us the light by opening up many new avenues of research. He was an elegant ...

Notes: Abstract Using the recently developed theory of resonant Raman scattering in the presence of strong double frequency fields, the statistical properties of the spontaneously emitted Stokes and Rayleigh radiation are calculated. In particular, the temporal intensity correlations of arbitrary order are evaluated. It is found that they possess the property of factorization in terms of the probabilities for finding the system in the resonant intermediate excited state when the starting state is the given initial state and when the starting state is a particular superposition of the ground and final excited states. The weight-factors in the particular superposition depend on the direction of observation and on the transition dipole-moments. The second-order intensity correlation is shown to have the complete anti-bunching property. The factorization property of the intensity correlations is useful in the calculation of photo-electron counting distributions.

Notes: Abstract Some properties of the Fokker-Planck equations with memory under the condition that detailed balance holds are discussed. The appropriate conditions which the drift and diffusion coefficients for a system in detailed balance should satisfy are obtained. The analysis is then restricted to a special class of Fokker-Planck equations namely the one studied previously by Zwanzig. Analog of Onsager's reciprocity relation is obtained and the eigenfunction expansion of the conditional probability is given. Finally the linear response theory of such systems is also briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract The stochastic and quantum dynamics of open quantum systems interacting with stochastic perturbations in considered. The master equations for one time and multi-time correlation functions of such a system are derived to all orders in the interaction with the stochastic perturbations. The importance of the non-markovian character of such equations in the study of various problems in optical resonance is discussed. The simplified form of the non-markovian master equations in Born approximation is also given. It is shown that such non-markovian master equations in Born approximation are exact if there is only one random perturbation, of the telegraphic signal type, acting on the system. The master equations for the linear response functions of an open system interacting with stochastic perturbations are also derived. The non-markovian master equations for multitime correlations are used to study the behaviour of two level atoms interacting with fluctuating laser fields. Both amplitude and phase fluctuations are taken into account. Explicit results are presented for the spectrum of resonance fluorescence, absorption spectrum, photon antibunching effects etc. The calculations are done for arbitrary values of the relaxation parameters and intial conditions. In general the fluorescence spectrum is found to be asymmetric for off resonant fields.

Notes: Abstract Bunching and antibunching effects in thermal beams are examined from the point of view of the statistics of the particles of the beam. A theorem is proven which enables one to express higher order correlations in a beam of bosons and fermions in terms of second order correlations.

Notes: Abstract It is verified that microreversibility conditions for higher order correlation functions for a classical or quantum markovian system are satisfied if they hold for second order correlation functions. The phase space version of the conditions is given. It is found that in this formulation the distribution function and Green's function for a given ordering mix with those for inverse ordering. We display explicitly the terms arising due to non-com-mutativity of operators for the Weyl ordering. Finally the microreversibility conditions are used to calculate the stationary solution of the master equation describingn photon absorption and emission.

Notes: Abstract The concept of microreversibility (detailed balance) as applied to open quantum Markovian systems is introduced. The properties of such systems obeying detailed balance are studied in detail. It is shown how microreversibility may be used to obtain the steady state solution for the density operator. Some properties of the eigenfunctions of the Liouville operator are discussed. The general formalism is applied to Pauli master equation and some other master equations describing the relaxation of oscillators, two-level atoms in contact with heat bath; parametric frequency conversion and a single mode laser.

Notes: Abstract The possibility of observing Ramsey fringes in situations where the time separation between two interaction zones is larger than the lifetime is discussed. The spectral characteristics of emission exhibit interferences which are shown to be due to the fact that the spontaneous emission event can occur in two different zones and thus erasing any “Welcher-Weg” information.

Notes: Abstract I present the current experimental and theoretical work on interference in complementary spaces. These ideas are applicable to both light and matter waves. I give a detailed treatment for classical light beams in frequency and time domains. I also present a description which gives the totality of interferences.

Notes: Abstract The linear response theory of systems obeying Fokker-Planck equations is discussed under the assumption that the principle of detailed balance is satisfied. This theory is used to obtain fluctuation-dissipation theorems for systems in a non-thermal equilibrium state corresponding to the steady state solution of the Fokker-Planck equation. Some of the aspects of the threshold region of a single mode laser (without detuning) are discussed. In particular it is shown that, contrary to the results established recently by others, the “linear susceptibility” χ(Ω) is acontinuous function of the pump parameterp. The results are then specialized to Gaussian Markov process in which case an alternate form of the fluctuation-dissipation theorems is also given. Finally few other generalizations of the fluctuation-dissipation theorems are also briefly discussed.
