    Notes: Abstract Plasma α- and γ-tocopherol were monitored in pregnant women throughout healthy gestational periods and after delivery and were compared with that of non pregnant women. The mean plasma α-tocopherol and γ-tocopherol concentrations in non pregnant Saudi women (15.2 ± 1.3 and 1.8 ± 0.2 μol/l respectively) were found within normal range. The maternal plasma α-tocopherol level steadily increased reaching maximum level (19.1 ± 1.6 μmol/l) at late gestation and then gradually decreased after delivery. On the contrary, the optimum level of γ-tocopherol (2.1 ± 0.2 μmol/l) was at mid gestation, followed by a progressive decrease until one month after delivery (1.5 ± 0.1 μol/l). This study shows that the maternal plasma α- and γ-tocopherol have different profiles that may be attributed to their different responses to the changes in maternal lipids during pregnancy.

    Notes: Abstract Short-term and long-term effects of bromocriptine mesylate (10 mg/kg i.p.) on cyclic AMP contents of the liver and some endocrine glands have been investigated in the presence and absence of sulpiride (10 mg/kg i.p.). Results revealed that bromocriptine caused significant elevations in the cyclic AMP contents of the liver and reduction in its adrenocortical content. Bromocriptine effect on the adrenal cortex was antagonized by sulpiride, whereas its effect on the liver was not changed. Bromocriptine did not change the, cyclic AMP content in the thyroid gland or the ovary.

    Notes: Abstract The activity of N-alkyl-1,2-diphenylethanolamines against CaCl2-induced cardiac arrhythmia was evaluated in the rat. The potencies of the compounds were compared with that of the established calcium ion-channel blocker, verapamil. The N-methyl, N-ethyl, and N-isobutyl derivatives as well as verapamil at doses of 2–8 µmol kg−1 protected the animals against the induced arrhythmia. The potency order was verapamil 〉 N methyl 〉 N-ethyl 〉 N-isobutyl derivatives. The N-isopropyl and N-butyl derivatives were inactive. The antiarrhythmic activity of the compounds was not due to local anesthetic activity but may be caused by calcium-channel inhibition.

    Description: A survey of ectoparasites of three species of fish (Oreochromis niloticus, Auchenoglanis occidentalis and Bagrus bayad) of River Benue was carried out for a period of three weeks. Samples were collected directly from fishermen, at the river side (River Benue) in a plastic bucket and were carried to the laboratory. A smear samples from the skin were taken. Fins were cuted and gills were dissected and examine individually in saline solution in a Petri dish and platyhelminthes parasites as the most common ectoparasites of threes three species (Oreochromis, Auchenoglanis, and Bagrus). A total number of five hundred and seventy two (572) parasites were observed. Result of this study reveals that the large number of parasites were found on the gills (65%) of the three fish species studied, compared to skin (16%) and fins (19%) of the total parasites observed; among the three fish species studied. O. niloticus carries 33% while A. occidentalis carries 41% and B. bayad carries 26% of the total parasites seen. There was negligible difference in the level of infestation in the sexes (i.e. male and female) of Oreochronis and Bagrus. However, a great significance difference in the level of infestation was found in the sexes of Auchenoglanis

    Description: A clear understanding of socio-technical interdependencies and a structured vision are prerequisites for fostering and steering a transition to a fully renewables-based energy system. To facilitate such understanding, a phase model for the renewable energy (RE) transition in MENA countries has been developed and applied to the country case of Yemen. It is designed to support the strategy development and governance of the energy transition and to serve as a guide for decision makers. The transition towards REs is still at a quite early stage in Yemen. The military conflict has prevented the implementation of most of the planned large-scale renewable projects. The political instability, the high dependence on fossil fuels, and poor administrative performance are the most pressing concerns for Yemen's electricity sector. At an operational level, Yemen requires a total retrofit of the electricity infrastructure and needs to expand its overall capacity while improving its efficiencies. Despite these challenges, rebuilding the energy system after the political turmoil and the subsequent violent conflicts could offer Yemen the capability to transition towards renewables. This will provide short-term and long-term opportunities and avoid stranded investments in fossil-fuel capacities. The priority is to improve the framework conditions for RE in Yemen, starting with the development of a long-term strategy up to 2030 and beyond. Also, an appropriate and transparent legislation must be created. Furthermore, based on the legislation, clear regulations for REs must be introduced, and a realistic timeframe for expansion must be established in order to promote acceptance and market development on a large scale. The results of the analysis along the transition phase model towards 100% RE are intended to stimulate and support the discussion on Yemen's future energy system by providing an over-arching guiding vision for the energy transition and the development of appropriate policies.

    Description: Mast cells (MCs) are tissue resident sentinels that mature and orchestrate inflammation in response to infection and allergy. While they are also frequently observed in tumors, the contribution of MCs to carcinogenesis remains unclear. Here, we show that sequential oncogenic events in gut epithelia expand different types of MCs in a temporal-, spatial-, and cytokine-dependent manner. The first wave of MCs expands focally in benign adenomatous polyps, which have elevated levels of IL-10, IL-13, and IL-33, and are rich in type-2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s). These vanguard MCs adhere to the transformed epithelial cells and express murine mast cell protease 2 (mMCP2; a typical mucosal MC protease) and, to a lesser extent, the connective tissue mast cell (CTMC) protease mMCP6. Persistence of MCs is strictly dependent on T cell-derived IL-10, and their loss in the absence of IL-10–expressing T cells markedly delays small bowel (SB) polyposis. MCs expand profusely in polyposis-prone mice when T cells overexpress IL-10. The frequency of polyp-associated MCs is unaltered in response to broad-spectrum antibiotics, arguing against a microbial component driving their recruitment. Intriguingly, when polyps become invasive, a second wave of mMCP5+/mMCP6+ CTMCs expands in the tumor stroma and at invasive tumor borders. Ablation of mMCP6 expression attenuates polyposis, but invasive properties of the remaining lesions remain intact. Our findings argue for a multistep process in SB carcinogenesis in which distinct MC subsets, and their elaborated proteases, guide disease progression.

    Description: The Saudi Arabian Glass Earth Pilot Project is a geophysical exploration program to explore the upper crust of the Kingdom for minerals, groundwater, and geothermal resources as well as strictly academic investigations. The project began with over 8000 km2 of green-field area. Airborne geophysics including electromagnetic (EM), magnetics, and gravity were used to develop several high priority targets for ground follow-up. Based on the results of airborne survey, a spectral induced polarization (SIP) survey was completed over one of the prospective targets. The field data were collected with a distributed array system, which has the potential for strong inductive coupling. This was examined in a synthetic study, and it was determined that with the geometries and conductivities in the field survey, the inductive coupling effect may be visible in the data. In this study, we also confirmed that time domain is vastly superior to frequency domain for avoiding inductive coupling, that measuring decays from 50 ms to 2 s allow discrimination of time constants from 1 ms to 5 s, and the relaxation parameter C is strongly coupled to intrinsic chargeability. We developed a method to fully include all 3D EM effects in the inversion of induced polarization (IP) data. The field SIP data were inverted using the generalized effective-medium theory of induced polarization (GEMTIP) in conjunction with an integral equation-based modeling and inversion methods. These methods can replicate all inductive coupling and EM effects, which removes one significant barrier to inversion of large bandwidth spectral IP data. The results of this inversion were interpreted and compared with results of drill hole set up in the survey area. The drill hole intersected significant mineralization which is currently being further investigated. The project can be considered a technical success, validating the methods and effective-medium inversion technique used for the project.

    Description: The dislocation free In x Al 1-x N nanowires (NWs) are grown on Si(111) by nitrogen plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy in the temperature regime of 490 °C–610 °C yielding In composition ranges over 0.50 ≤ x ≤ 0.17. We study the optical properties of these NWs by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), photoluminescence, and Raman spectroscopies since they possesses minimal strain with reduced defects comparative to the planar films. The optical bandgap measurements of In x Al 1-x N NWs are demonstrated by SE where the absorption edges of the NW samples are evaluated irrespective of substrate transparency. A systematic Stoke shift of 0.04–0.27 eV with increasing x was observed when comparing the micro-photoluminescence spectra with the Tauc plot derived from SE. The micro-Raman spectra in the NWs with x = 0.5 showed two-mode behavior for A 1 (LO) phonons and single mode behavior for E 2 H phonons. As for x = 0.17, i.e., high Al content, we observed a peculiar E 2 H phonon mode splitting. Further, we observe composition dependent frequency shifts. The 77 to 600 K micro-Raman spectroscopy measurements show that both AlN- and InN-like modes of A 1 (LO) and E 2 H phonons in In x Al 1-x N NWs are redshifted with increasing temperature, similar to that of the binary III group nitride semiconductors. These studies of the optical properties of the technologically important In x Al 1-x N nanowires will path the way towards lasers and light-emitting diodes in the wavelength of the ultra-violet and visible range.
