Notizen: The oxidative degradation of polybutadiene-styrene-acrylonitrile (ABS) copolymer was extensively investigated. Three factors were studied: the influence of ageing temperature on the rate of the oxidation of the copolymer; the efficiency of β-carotene as chain breaking antioxidant; and the effect of butadiene content on the rate of the oxidative degradation of the ABS copolymer.

Notizen: The photostabilization of polychloroprene in the presence of four derivatives of 5-hydroxy-3-phenylamino-1-phenyl- 3:5-dihydrobenzene was studied. The inhibitory activity of the added compounds is proportional to their extinction coefficient values. The addition of singlet oxygen quenchers such as β-carotene reduces the rate of degradation of polymer solutions. This means that singlet oxygen may involve the photooxidation process. The influence of the most effective stabilizer was also examined using Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) technique; the obtained results indicates the photostabilizing effect of it.

Notizen: Homogeneous graft copolymerization of dichlorodimethylsilane (DCDMS) onto cellulose acetate (CA) was carried out in acetone. The weight conversion, grafting percentage and grafting efficiency were determined as functions of the polymerization temperature and the concentrations of monomer and cellulose acetate. The IR and NMR data of the graft copolymers showed peaks characteristic of grafted chains. The order of the solvents used for increasing the grafting yield values was found as follows: cyclohexanone 〉 ethyl acetate 〉 dioxane, which is in accordance with their dielectric constants. Cellulose acetate previously oxidized by treatment with a mixture of oxalic acid and potassium dichromate when grafted with DCDMS gave low grafting yield values. The rate of copolymerization grafting of DCDMS onto CA was determined (Rp = 1.1 %min-1). The activation energy of the reaction between DCDMS and CA was calculated (1.32 kJ mol-1, 0.32 kcal mol-1). The mechanism of graft copolymerization of DCDMS onto CA is discussed.

Notizen: Graft copolymerization of 4-vinyl pyridine(4-VP) onto ethyl cellulose (EC) using ammonium persulfate (APS) as free radical initiator was studied in the toluene: DMSO (4:l v/v) solvent system. The weight conversion, grafting percentage and grafting efficiency were determined as functions of the polymerization temperature and of the concentration of monomer, ethyl cellulose and initiator. The homopolymerization of 4-VP in the presence ofAPS was also investigated. The graft copolymers were characterized by thin layer chromatography, IR spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance and intrinsic viscosity measurements. The highest rate of propagation of graft copolymerization of 4-VP onto EC in the presence of APS observed was 0.06 %/min. A suitable mechanism of grafting reaction is discussed.

Notizen: Homogeneous thermal graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) onto ethyl cellulose (EC) by using ammonium persulfate (APS) as free radical initiator was carried out in the toluene: DMSO solvent system. Many variables affecting the grafting parameters were studied. The effect of using comonomer pairs of acrylonitrile and acrylamide on the grafting yield was examined. Different techniques such as IR and NMR were used. A Trommsdorf effect was observed in certain systems. The rate of graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile onto EC was determined as Rp=0.16% min - 1. The higher carbonyl content of thermooxidized EC showed lower grafting yield. The mechanism of the grafting reaction is discussed.
