    Description: Globalized infectious diseases are causing species declines worldwide, but their source often remains elusive. We used whole-genome sequencing to solve the spatiotemporal origins of the most devastating panzootic to date, caused by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis , a proximate driver of global amphibian declines. We traced the source of B. dendrobatidis to the Korean peninsula, where one lineage, Bd ASIA-1, exhibits the genetic hallmarks of an ancestral population that seeded the panzootic. We date the emergence of this pathogen to the early 20th century, coinciding with the global expansion of commercial trade in amphibians, and we show that intercontinental transmission is ongoing. Our findings point to East Asia as a geographic hotspot for B. dendrobatidis biodiversity and the original source of these lineages that now parasitize amphibians worldwide.

    Description: The recently emerged chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans currently causes amphibian population declines. We hypothesized that temperature dictates infection dynamics of B. salamandrivorans, and that therefore heat treatment may be applied to clear animals from infection. We examined the impact of environmental temperature on B. salamandrivorans infection and disease dynamics in fire salamanders (Salamandra salamandra). Colonization of salamanders by B. salamandrivorans occurred at 15°C and 20°C but not at 25°C, with a significantly faster buildup of infection load and associated earlier mortality at 15°C. Exposing B. salamandrivorans infected salamanders to 25°C for 10 days resulted in complete clearance of infection and clinically cured all experimentally infected animals. This treatment protocol was validated in naturally infected wild fire salamanders. In conclusion, we show that B. salamandrivorans infection and disease dynamics are significantly dictated by environmental temperature, and that heat treatment is a viable option for clearing B. salamandrivorans infections.     Description: Chytridiomycosis caused by the chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal) poses a serious threat to urodelan diversity worldwide. Antimycotic treatment of this disease using protocols developed for the related fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), results in therapeutic failure. Here, we reveal that this therapeutic failure is partly due to different minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of antimycotics against Bsal and Bd. In vitro growth inhibition of Bsal occurs after exposure to voriconazole, polymyxin E, itraconazole and terbinafine but not to florfenicol. Synergistic effects between polymyxin E and voriconazole or itraconazole significantly decreased the combined MICs necessary to inhibit Bsal growth. Topical treatment of infected fire salamanders (Salamandra salamandra), with voriconazole or itraconazole alone (12.5 μg/ml and 0.6 μg/ml respectively) or in combination with polymyxin E (2000 IU/ml) at an ambient temperature of 15 °C during 10 days decreased fungal loads but did not clear Bsal infections. However, topical treatment of Bsal infected animals with a combination of polymyxin E (2000 IU/ml) and voriconazole (12.5 μg/ml) at an ambient temperature of 20 °C resulted in clearance of Bsal infections. This treatment protocol was validated in 12 fire salamanders infected with Bsal during a field outbreak and resulted in clearance of infection in all animals.     Description: Emerging infectious diseases are reducing biodiversity on a global scale. Recently, the emergence of the chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans resulted in rapid declines in populations of European fire salamanders. Here, we screened more than 5000 amphibians from across four continents and combined experimental assessment of pathogenicity with phylogenetic methods to estimate the threat that this infection poses to amphibian diversity. Results show that B. salamandrivorans is restricted to, but highly pathogenic for, salamanders and newts (Urodela). The pathogen likely originated and remained in coexistence with a clade of salamander hosts for millions of years in Asia.     Notes: Abstract We investigated recruitment of the herbivorous gastropodLacuna vincta (Montagu, 1803) in the canopies ofMacrocystis integrifolia andNereocystis luetkeana beds in Barkley Sound, Vancouver Island (British Colombia), from 1987 to 1989. Four factors influencing intensity and patterns of recruitment were studied: (1) seasonality of oviposition, (2) larval abundance, (3) growth of larvae in the field and (4) larval settlement. Egg masses were abundant on low intertidal algae but were scarce in kelp canopies. Although egg masses could be found almost year-round, a distinct and intense period of oviposition occurred during winter and spring. Intracapsular development lasted 2.5 to 3.5 wk before planktotrophic veligers emerged. The duration of the planktonic period, 7 to 9 wk, was determined through an in situ study of cohorts ofLacuna spp. larvae present in the plankton between January and June 1988. The general timing of the onset of the spring peak recruitment period was predicted from these cohorts. Primary periods of recruitment ofL. vincta in the canopy occurred in April–May (average density up to 383.9 juveniles m−2 blades), with a second period of lower intensity in the late summer—fall period. We observed similar trends between abundance of advanced larvae (〉 500µm) in the plankton and recruitment rates in kelp canopies. Although adults were occasionally observed in the canopy, newly metamorphosed juveniles consistently dominated the habitat. The persistance of small juveniles (0.7 to 1.5 mm), rapid declines in density shortly after recruitment, and SCUBA observations of drifting individuals suggest that juveniles migrate to the under-canopy or low intertidal area after a brief period of growth on kelp blades.

    Notes: Abstract  Detailed inventories of the benthos and field studies of the settlement and recruitment processes of marine benthic invertebrates require accurate identification of newly settled larvae and early juvenile stages. We provide morphological criteria, visible under a good quality dissecting stereomicroscope, by which to discriminate between species of the settling larval and early postlarval stages (∼250 to 700 μm shell length) of mussels of the genus Mytilus on the west coast of Vancouver Island and Southern California. Compared to the bay mussel (M. trossulus), the sea mussel (M. californianus) has: (i) a shallower and flatter umbo, the latter corresponding to a significantly less pronounced prodissoconch I (PI) curvature and (ii) a greater PI length; as well as (iii) a wider separation between the provincular lateral teeth (PLT). The PLT distance is a new term denoting the separation between the midpoint of two reddish pigment spots of the provinculum (larval hinge apparatus) region of settling larvae and early postlarvae of Mytilus spp. from the East Pacific Coast. These spots mark the larger provincular lateral teeth, situated at either end of the provinculum. We confirmed the validity of morphological criteria by comparing PCR products of genomic DNA of provisionally identified postlarvae. Furthermore, measurements of PI lengths and PLT distance from well-preserved postlarvae of sea mussels (M. californianus) and of bay mussels (M. galloprovincialis) from Southern California indicate that the PI morphology and morphometry, and PLT distance criterion apply for that region as well. The criteria presented here can also apply to the advanced (competent) veliger stages, as the latter may settle (i.e. become the “settling” stage) upon encountering a suitable substrate. Our present and previously published work provide economical and effective identification methods that can be used to discriminate among early life history stages (∼250 μm to 5.0 mm shell length) of Mytilus spp. along the west coast of North America.

    Notes: Abstract The whelk Buccinum undatum L. in the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence has a distinct annual reproductive cycle. The ovary and pallial oviduct of the female, and the seminal vesicle of the male, show parallel development, whereas the testis has an inverse cycle. Thus, at the end of winter when the ovary, pallial oviduct and seminal vesicle reach maximal size, the testis is small and undeveloped, whereas the reverse situation occurs in summer. This is the first report of a totally inverse relationship between the ovary and testis for a marine invertebrate. This unusual pattern is due to the long-term storage of sperm in the seminal vesicle of the male prior to copulation. There is no resting period at the end of oogenesis, but rather renewed ovarian development starts shortly after gamete release. By contrast, in the testis after transfer of sperm to the seminal vesicle at the end of spermatogenesis, there is a distinct period of phagocytosis. Mating begins in mid-May, reaches a peak during June and terminates prior to July. Egg laying begins in late May, reaches a peak in mid-June to mid-July and can continue until late August. Examination of the incidence of individuals with food in their stomachs showed that feeding activity is maximal in late autumn through to early spring and decreases sharply coincident with the onset of breeding in late May.
