    Description: Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is specialized in energy expenditure, making it a potential target for anti-obesity therapies. Following exposure to cold, BAT is activated by the sympathetic nervous system with concomitant release of catecholamines and activation of beta-adrenergic receptors. Because BAT therapies based on cold exposure or beta-adrenergic agonists are clinically not feasible, alternative strategies must be explored. Purinergic co-transmission might be involved in sympathetic control of BAT and previous studies reported inhibitory effects of the purinergic transmitter adenosine in BAT from hamster or rat. However, the role of adenosine in human BAT is unknown. Here we show that adenosine activates human and murine brown adipocytes at low nanomolar concentrations. Adenosine is released in BAT during stimulation of sympathetic nerves as well as from brown adipocytes. The adenosine A2A receptor is the most abundant adenosine receptor in human and murine BAT. Pharmacological blockade or genetic loss of A2A receptors in mice causes a decrease in BAT-dependent thermogenesis, whereas treatment with A2A agonists significantly increases energy expenditure. Moreover, pharmacological stimulation of A2A receptors or injection of lentiviral vectors expressing the A2A receptor into white fat induces brown-like cells-so-called beige adipocytes. Importantly, mice fed a high-fat diet and treated with an A2A agonist are leaner with improved glucose tolerance. Taken together, our results demonstrate that adenosine-A2A signalling plays an unexpected physiological role in sympathetic BAT activation and protects mice from diet-induced obesity.     Description: We present optical spectroscopy and near-infrared photometry of 57 faint ( g = 19–22) high proper motion white dwarfs identified through repeat imaging of 3100 deg 2 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey footprint by Munn et al. We use ugriz and JH photometry to perform a model atmosphere analysis, and identify 10 ultracool white dwarfs with T eff 〈 4000 K, including the coolest pure H atmosphere white dwarf currently known, J1657+2638, with T eff = 3550 ± 100 K. The majority of the objects with cooling ages larger than 9 Gyr display thick disc kinematics and constrain the age of the thick disc to ≥11 Gyr. There are four white dwarfs in our sample with large tangential velocities ( v tan 〉 120 km  s –1 ) and UVW velocities that are more consistent with the halo than the Galactic disc. For typical 0.6 M white dwarfs, the cooling ages for these halo candidates range from 2.3 to 8.5 Gyr. However, the total main-sequence+white dwarf cooling ages of these stars would be consistent with the Galactic halo if they are slightly undermassive. Given the magnitude limits of the current large-scale surveys, many of the coolest and oldest white dwarfs remain undiscovered in the solar neighbourhood, but upcoming surveys such as Gaia and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope should find many of these elusive thick disc and halo white dwarfs.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung An berippten Flächen von Klimaanlagen kann Kondensation auftreten, wenn die Oberflächentemperatur unterhalb der Taupunkttemperatur des in der Umgebungsluft enthaltenen Wasserdampfes liegt. Wärme und Stoff werden von der gesättigten Luftschicht an den flüssigen Wasserfilm übertragen und die Kondensationswärme geht an die Rippe über. In dieser Arbeit wird eine quasilinearisierte Lösung für senkrechte rechtwinkelige Rippen mit Kondensation angegeben unter der Annahme, daß die mittleren Koeffizienten der Wärme- und Stoffübertragung längs der Rippenhöhe konstant sind. Rechtwinkelige Rippen mit und ohne Kondensation werden verglichen und optimale Rippendimensionen mitgeteilt. Die optimale Rippenlänge, der Gütegrad und die mittlere Rippentemperatur sind mit Kondensation kleiner als ohne Kondensation.
    Notes: Abstract There may be condensation on the fin surfaces of the air conditioning systems due to the temperature of the fin surfaces being below the dew point temperature of the water vapor in the surrounding air. Heat and mass transfer occur from the saturated air layer to the liquid water film and the latent heat of condensation is transferred to the fin. This study presents a quasilinearization solution for vertical rectangular fins when condensation occurs, assuming that the average convective heat and mass transfer coefficients are constant along the height of the fin. Rectangular fins with and without condensation on the surface have been compared and optimum fin dimensions have been given. The optimum fin length, the fin effectiveness and the average fin temperature in the case of condensation were found to be smaller than in the case of no condensation.

    Notes: In the self-field approximation, the influence of the grain radius on the current–voltage characteristics and associated critical current density Jc are investigated by considering the conventional flux flow motion of vortices. It is shown that the direct summation theory of Campbell et al. could be adopted to the granular systems [A. M. Campbell, J. E. Evetts, and D. Dew-Hughes, Philos. Mag. 10, 333 (1964)]. We found that Jc is enhanced as the size of the grains is decreased. The case of the critical current density being greater for smaller grains, which is consistent with both transport and low-field magnetization measurements is discussed by the weak links between the superconducting grains and also with the percolation model. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Temperaturverteilung und Wärmeübergang, die mit Hilfe einer Quasilinearisierung gefunden wurden, werden mit jenen nach einer Gauß-Seidel-Iterationsmethode verglichen. Diese Näherung erweist sich als befriedigend. Rippentemperatur und Rippenwirkungsgrad der dreieckigen und der rechteckigen Rippe werden mit und ohne Kondensation bestimmt; optimale Rippenabmessungen werden als Funktion der Biot-Zahl angegeben.
    Notes: Abstract In this study rectangular and triangular fins have been compared when condensation occurs. The temperature distributions and the heat transfer found using quasilinearization techniques and those found by using Gauss-Seidel iteration method are compared and this approximation proved to be quite satisfactory. The fin temperature and the fin effectiveness of the triangular and rectangular fins have been determined with and without condensation and optimum fin dimensions have been given as a function of Biot number.
