    Notes: Abstract The mutant brevistylis of Oenothera (Onagraceae) is characterized mainly by malformations of the style and by female sterility. Morphological features of the style and stigmas, such as the length of the style and the number, size, and shape of the stigmatic lobes is very variable. The abscission layer between ovary and style is missing and the placenta with ovules is protruded into the style. An interpretation of the disturbances in development observed in the br/br homozygotes is presented. The primary influence of br on development is proposed to be a general delay in meristematic growth, followed by irregularities in the timing of morphogenetic events which in turn lead to the anomalies in morphology of style and stigmas.

    Notes: Summary Flowers of the pear cultivars Conference, Doyenné du Comice and Gieser Wildeman were pollinated with untreated and 50-krad-irradiated pollen. Fruitlets were sectioned at regular intervals up to 6 weeks after pollination. Tubes of the irradiated pollen grew slower, but within two weeks nearly as many embryos were initiated as in the case of untreated pollen. Thereafter, the proportion of degenerated embryos increased, although the endosperm sometimes persisted. Six weeks after pollination only about 21% of the seeds induced by the irradiated pollen still contained normal embryos. At or before that time in-vitro culture of the immature seeds will be necessary because few embryos survive until harvest. The irradiated pollen stimulated a rather large ‘parthenocarpic’ fruit-set, presumably associated with endosperm rather than embryo development during the first 4–6 weeks after pollination. The possibilities of haploid production are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract New data on the development of polarity in the ovules during megasporogenesis and early stages of embryo sac development inOenothera-hybrids are presented. It is confirmed that allOe. hookeri-hybrids show a strong tendency to form heteropolar tetrads, with the micropylar megaspore developing into an embryo sac. This preference is seen in the delay of the second meiotic division on the chalazal side, the absence of callose in the lateral wall of the micropylar megaspore, and the accumulation of starch in this megaspore. However, homopolar tetrads, chalazal preference, and ovules with two developing embryo sacs are also observed with considerable frequency. Quantitative data on the frequency of the different developmental types are compared with earlier genetic results about competition in the haplophase. There is sufficiently good agreement to support the hypothesis ofRenner that there is a correlation between the developmental processes in the megaspore tetrad and the genetic phenomena of competition in the haplophase.

    Notes: Abstract In the F2-progeny of hybrids from crosses betweenOenothera biennis orsuaveolens andOe. hookeri with theRenner-complexesalbicans andhhookeri, the development of callose pattern in meiocytes and megaspore tetrads is the same as in the F1 and the parentOe. hookeri. During the development of the megaspore tetrads and the embryo sacs primary and secondary heteropolarity as well as homopolarity is observed. Estimates for the initial frequency of homo- and heteropolar tetrads at the end of the degeneration of megaspores in the tetrads immediately before the start of embryo sac development could be calculated. The F2-plants can be arranged in three groups, distinguished by the frequency of the two polarity types. One of these groups behaves similar to the parentOe. hookeri, the two others have more homopolar tetrads. The segregation can be interpreted as recombination of genes, which influence the development of the polarity in the ovules. This is possible by crossing-over of genes between the twoRenner-complexes of the hybrid.

    Notes: Abstract The pattern of callose formation in meiotic cell walls and the order of megaspore degeneration and polarity during embryo sac development are investigated in F2-plants ofOe. hookeri ×suaveolens and the reciprocal cross. All investigated characters are variable between the ovules in the same ovary. Plants differ in the frequency of the types of callose pattern and polarity of the embryo sacs. In segregating progenies different combinations of both characters are found. The genetic basis of the polarity phenomena during the embryo sac development is discussed. In our material no correlation can be seen between the callose pattern in the surrounding wall of the meiotic cell and the development of polarity in the later stages.

    Notes: Summary Pollination and pollen tube growth was observed in pistils of fertile and female-sterile plants ofOenothera mut.brevistylis. The stigmas and styles of sterile plants were very irregularly formed and additional ovules often developed in the style. The malformations did not inhibit pollen tube growth but made it slower and less efficient. The pollen tubes grew in the ovary but did not find the ovules. Near their tips, pollen tubes branched or meandered without any clear direction. Lack of tropism caused by malfunction of the ovules is postulated in the female-sterile plant.
