    Notes: Like most small marine fish larvae, the stomachs of winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus are undeveloped at first feeding and have relatively reduced digestive capacity. This work was undertaken to test whether larvae at the onset of stomach differentiation (larval size about 5.5 mm) could be early weaned onto a commercial microencapsulated diet. We assessed the effect of early weaning by first comparing growth performance (standard length, total protein content and age at metamorphosis) of larvae fed enriched live prey from first feeding to a size of 5.5 mm and then reared on three different feeding regimes until metamorphosis: (1) live prey (LP) as a control group; (2) mixed feeding of live prey and microencapsulated diet (LP-ME); (3) exclusively microencapsulated diet (ME) after fast weaning over 4 days (to a larval size of 6.2 mm). No differences were observed between larval development in the two first groups, which began metamorphosis at 40 days old. The larvae of the third group showed significantly slower growth that resulted in a delay of 4 days in the onset of metamorphosis. Differences in live prey availability between the treatments and the short transition period to allow the larvae to adapt to the new diet were identified as possible contributing factors to the slower growth and to the delay in metamorphosis of early weaned larvae. In a second experiment, the transitional weaning period was increased until the larvae were 6.6 mm in length. Weaning at that size resulted in no slowing of growth or delay in metamorphosis, suggesting that the feeding schedule was adequate.

    Notes: Chronic stress is responsible for many problems occurring in fish holding facilities, such as increased susceptibility to disease, reduced growth rate and suppression of the immune response. The goal of this study was to verify if wild winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus Walbaum) suffer from chronic stress when kept several months in captivity. We hypothesized that winter flounder not subjected to chronic stress in captivity would have similar or higher condition indices and similar stress response compared to fish from the wild. Our results showed that the condition index of winter flounder kept in captivity was higher (1.50) than those from the wild (1.33) even after one year of captivity. The intensity of the acute stress response following short-term exposure to air was similar between wild and captive fish (no significant interaction between the factors ‘stress’ and ‘origin of the fish’). Body water content (an indicator of energy reserves) was lower (76.1%) compared to wild fish (79.8%) after one year of captivity, suggesting that the winter fast had been less energetically demanding in captive fish. These results indicate that no chronic stress was present in captive fish. On the other hand, the mortality during captivity was around 30%, which is high for the aquaculture industry. Further work to address this problem is required.

    Notes: Experiments were undertaken to investigate the apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC) of a range of macro- and micronutrients in rainbow trout using three external digestibility markers (chromic oxide, acid insoluble ash and titanium dioxide, alone or in combination), and three methods of faeces collection (modified Guelph system, St-Pee system and abdominal massage; hereafter referred to as ‘column’, ’collect’ and ‘strip’, respectively). For each method of faeces collection, three replicate tanks of fish were acclimated for 5 days to a practical diet containing the external marker followed by 5 days of faeces collection. Both marker type and collection method significantly influenced ADC estimate in a similar manner for dry matter, protein, nitrogen-free extract, ash and energy. The ADC was consistently highest for the column and lowest for the strip methods of collection, and titanium dioxide gave higher ADCs vs. the other markers. Lipid ADC did not differ between the column and collect methods, but collection of faeces by the strip method gave lower ADCs, irrespective of marker type. In general, nutrient ADC was higher with the combined markers than when single markers were employed. The influence of marker type and collection method was less clear for the individual minerals studied.

    Notes: Seawater acclimation of diploid (FF) and triploid (F2F) brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis, diploid (AA) Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus, and diploid (FA) and triploid (F2A) hybrids between female brook charr and male Arctic charr was investigated. Triploidization of brook charr and the hybrid did not have any effect on the acclimation. Seawater acclimation of the hybrid was achieved during the experimental period and was comparable to that observed in brook charr. Acclimation could not be ascertained in Arctic charr since the level of cortisol, a stress indicator, was still high at the end of the experiment. No relationship between either length or condition factors and plasma osmolality was observed. Elevated plasma cortisol concentrations in Arctic charr and in diploid or triploid hybrids, both in fresh water and sea water, indicate more favourable rearing conditions for brook charr.

    Notes: Autoflocculation and bioflocculation are considered to be the most promising means for the economical harvesting of microalgae. We have therefore studied these phenomena with cultures of Scenedesmus obliquus produced during biological tertiary wastewater treatment. The quantity of extracellular polymers produced during ageing of the cultures proved insufficient to initiate bio-flocculation while the concentration of Ca2+ and PO43- of the treated effluent were too low to induce autoflocculation. It has been shown, however, that the algae sediment more readily upon ageing, possibly as a result of increased ceil density. The use of density gradients made with Percoll (a colloidal solution of silica particles) allowed measurement of the true cell density and showed that this increases when cultures enter the declining growth phase. The quality of the biomass thus harvested is, however, considerably impaired, protein content decreasing from 62.7% (dry wt) during the exponential growth phase (day 5) to 14% at the end of cultures (day 21).

    Notes: The microscopic green alga, Scenedesmus obliquus, was used in a semicontinuous culture system for the tertiary treatment of urban wastewater, with the simultaneous production of usable biomass. Partial biomass recycling was used to increase the productivity of the system by overcoming the limits imposed by the low maximal growth rate of the alga. The biomass to be recycled was collected by simple gravity settling of the removed culture.The culture system was operated at different dilution rates and its productivity measured at each rate. An evaluation of the crude nutrient composition of the algae produced at each dilution rate was also carried out.The system was found to operate stably at dilution rates of up to 0.8 day-1 which represents a 20% net increase over the maximum dilution rate allowed under the same conditions in a system without recirculation. The composition of the biomass produced varied little over a range of dilution rates, which may be of relevance to its projected end-use.The study indicated that such a system can exploit available light to the full and should be of particular value for the treatment of low-strength wastes such as we employed.

    Notes: For the characterization of CO2 absorption in aerated microalgal culture systems, a different approach based on KLa(O2) determination and transformation was studied. To confirm the validity of this method, the influence of reactions between CO2 and compounds (OH-, H2O, and NH3) present in the culture medium upon the absorption mechanism was evaluated under different physical and chemical culture conditions. Under these conditions, knowledge of the relative magnitudes of the diffusion and reaction kinetics permitted the evaluation of their relative importance. For the determination of the parameters required for the calculation of the CO2 absorption constant, empirical correlations for KL0 and a were used that had been previously verified with experimental data for O2 absorption. Since, for the conditions studied, the absorption rate was shown to be independent of the chemical reactions taking place in the liquid phase, the KLa for CO2 could be directly related to the KLa for O2 by a simple factor that took into account the difference in aqueous diffusivity of the two gases. Thus, using methods developed for determining O2 absorption in gas-liquid contactors, it is possible to adequately characterize CO2 absorption for laboratory and pilot scale algal production systems.

    Notes: Abstract As part of a program to develop biological wastewatertreatment systems for cold climate areas four strainsof filamentous, mat-forming cyanobacteria isolatedfrom Arctic and Antarctic environments were evaluatedfor their nutrient stripping and growth capabilities. A tropical strain, Phormidium bohneri, known forits excellent performance in wastewater treatment, wasused as a comparison. Experiments were done inartificial media under controlled batch cultureconditions to avoid interactions with indigenousmicroorganisms such as bacteria and protozoa. Theculture medium simulated real effluents containinghigh concentrations of nitrate and phosphate.Temperatures (5, 15 and 25°C) and irradiances(80, 210, 350, 640 and 1470 µmol photon m-2s-1) wereselected according to situations encountered in avariety of field conditions. For all irradiancelevels, growth was satisfactory at 15 and 25 °C,but limited at 5 °C. At 25 °C a satisfactory nitrogen removal rate (3.5and 4.0 mg N L-1d-1) was obtained forone polar strain (Phormidium tenue) and thecontrol P. bohneri. At 15 °C, the bestnitrogen removal rate (3.5 mg N L-1d-1)was measured with P. bohneri while the best ratefor the polar strains was around 2.3 mg NL-1d-1. At 15 °C, a phosphorusremoval rate of 0.6 mg P L-1d-1 wasobtained with P. bohneri and polar strains P. tenue and Oscillatoria O-210. Nitrogen(NO3 -) and phosphorus (PO4 3-)uptake rates increased as a function of irradianceover the range 80 to 350 μmolphoton m-2s-1. Our results indicate thattertiary biological wastewater treatment at lowtemperatures (5 °C) cannot be anticipated withthe polar strains tested, because they arepsychrotrophic rather than psychrophilic and thus growtoo slowly under conditions of extreme cold. However, it appears that these cyanobacteria would beuseful for wastewater treatment at moderately cooltemperatures (c. 15 °C), which are commonduring spring and fall in northern climates.
