Notes: An investigative study was conducted on how two different dies designed to producesound specimens for evaluating mechanical properties of semi-solid alloys could be filledoptimally. The first die contains one cavity that produces a wedge with a sectional thickness varyingfrom 19.05 mm (0.75 in) to 9.52 mm (0.375 in). The second die contains four cavities fed by asingle runner, producing ASTM-type round bars with a diameter of 9.52 mm (0.375 in).Experiments were undertaken to cast partial and complete shots of A356 alloy test specimens undercontrolled injection conditions. Flow patterns developed from the moment the alloy entered thecavity were noted, including difficulties experienced in balancing flow in the four-cavity die.Microstructural abnormalities were observed in the bar specimens examined using optical andelectron microscopy. It was found that control of filling and solidification in the wedge die wasmuch easier and specimens produced did not result in any significant alloy segregation

Notes: Abstract In the present paper, Gurson's constitutive equation, which takes into account the development of voids, is used to study the behaviour of the material in the region near crack tip. Furthermore, the effect of void development on Young's modulus, which was not considered by Gurson, is taken into consideration. The analyses on void development, on stress distribution near crack tip, and on the variance of COD for the plane strain mode I problem are carried out with the large elastic-plastic deformation finite element method. The results are compared with those estimated from the Prandtl-Reuss constitutive equation.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the microvoid multistage nucleation model [14,15] suggested by the authors of this paper has been studied on the micro ductile damage and fracture of metallic material under large elastic-plastic deformation. Using this model, the analyses of micro damage and fracture for various axisymmetric tensile specimens and for TPB and CCP cracked specimens have been carried out. And the results from these analyses on damage development and fracture are in good agreement with the experimental ones for axisymmetric specimens and reasonable for cracked specimens from the microscopic point of view.

Notes: Abstract In the present paper, the new material parameter of ductile fracturev gc with an obvious microscopic physical meaning is emphasized, which can be determined by macroscopic method. The theoretical and experimental background for the criterion of critical void growth ratio is expounded from both macroscopic and microscopic points of view. The relationship between the macroform parameterv gc and microform oneR c /R go of critical void growth ratio is investigated. The engineering experimental procedure for determining the value ofv gc of materials has been recommended. The values ofv gc for some materials with different heat treatments have been estimated. It is found that the parameterv gc can be effectively used for selecting materials and their heat treatments. A modified ASPEF criterion accounting for stress states has been proposed. Related expression of modified ASPEF andv gc has been derived.

Notes: Based on the Hamiltonian theory and method of elasticity, a ring and a circularhyper-analytical-elements are constructed and formulated. The hyper-analytical-elements give aprecise description of the displacement and stress fields in the vicinity of crack tip for the bilinearcohesive crack model. The new analytical element can be implemented into finite element methodprogram systems to solve crack propagation problems for plane structures with arbitrary shapes andloads. Numerical results for typical problems show that the method is simple, efficient and accurate

Notes: In this paper, the adsorption of human serum albumin (HSA), human serum fibrinogen (HFG)and human serum immune globulin (IG) on surfaces of diamond like carbon film (DLC), diamond film(DF) and graphite has been studied. The adsorption isotherms of single component protein solution andthe competitive adsorption of binary system have been investigated by radioisotope 125 I labeling method. Results showed that (1) the adsorptive amounts of HSA on DLC is more than that of HFG, but the adsorptiveamounts of HFG on DF and graphite are apparently more than those HSA; (2) the relative competitiveadsorption ability of three proteins on DF and graphite surfaces is HFG 〉 IG 〉 HSA, but that on DLC isHFG ≈ HAS 〉 IG, comparison with HSA, there is no apparent competitive adsorption superiority on DLCfor HFG. These results indicated that there is no apparent distinction for the adsorption of three humanserum proteins on DLC, but the adsorption of HFG on DF and graphite takes precedence in varyingdegrees. It probably makes rational explanation for the result of blood-compatibility tests in vitro thatDLC is good, but DF and graphite are worse

Notes: Quantitative evaluation of repairing effect of bone grafting material is one of the essentialstudying subjects. However, traditional evaluation methods are subjective and qualitative. In this paper, the region of new bone from a bone repairing biomaterial planted image is extracted based on color imagesegmentation and then statistically analyzed to evaluate the property of bone grafting materialquantitatively. HSI color model, which corresponds with people’s vision system for color is used toachieve ideal segmental results and effective utilization of color information. The S and I variable areused as thresholding condition for image segmentation, thereby obtaining the area of new bone. The effectof BMP contained in BMP/α-TCP is estimated furthermore. Experimental results show that the compositeBMP/α-TCP induce more bone than pure α-TCP in virtue of BMP. This study provides theoretical andexperimental suggestions for clinical applications of BMP/α-TCP

Notes: Summary Previously proposed mechanisms for Down syndrome (trisomy 21) have generally invoked a progressive increase in meiotic nondisjunction to explain maternal-age dependence, but models of this sort have failed to predict the observed patterns of marker segregation. Here we propose instead that age-dependent trisomy 21 results primarily from a mechanism that favors maturation and utilization of euploid oocytes in preference to the pre-existing aneuploid products of mitotic (premeiotic) nondisjunction. The increased utilization of aneuploid oocytes at later stages of maternal life would result from their increased proportion following many progressive cycles of selection against their maturation in earlier stages. Derivation of a quantitative model and evaluation of existing data indicate that the pattern of marker segregation associated with agedependent trisomy 21 supports the proposed mechanism.
