    Notes: A class of (1+1)-dimensional integrable systems which are constrained from the Kadomtsev–Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy is studied. The bilinear equations of these integrable systems are shown first, and then by using the free fermion operators their rational and soliton solutions which are closely related to the τ functions of the KP hierarchy are obtained. The result implies that a large family of solutions of the (2+1)-dimensional KP hierarchy can be obtained by solving these (1+1)-dimensional integrable systems; in particular, the N-soliton solutions of the KP hierarchy can be deduced from the soliton solutions of these (1+1)-dimensional integrable systems.

    Notes: : High-capacity wells are used as a convenient and economical means of sampling groundwater quality. Although the inherent limitations of using these wells are generally recognized, little has been done to investigate how these wells actually sample groundwater. A semi-analytical particle tracking model is used to illustrate the influence of variable vertical contaminant distributions and aquifer heterogeneity on the composition of water samples from these wells during short pumping periods. The hypothetical pumping well used in the simulations is located in an unconfined, alluvial aquifer with a shallow water table and concentration gradients of nitrate-nitrogen contamination. This is a typical setting for many irrigated areas in the United States. The main conclusions are: (1) high-capacity wells underestimate the average amount of contamination within an aquifer; (2) shapes of concentration-time curves for high-capacity wells appear to be governed by the distribution of the contaminant and travel times to the well; (3) variables such as well construction, pumping rate, and hydrogeologic properties contribute to the magnitude of the concentration-time curves at individual high-capacity wells; and (4) a sampling strategy using concentration-time curves based on the behavioral characteristics of the well rather than individual samples will provide a much better framework for interpreting spatial contaminant distributions.

    Notes: The method of Buscheck and Alcantar (1995) is shown to be valid for the concentration data observed in wells along the centerline and near a source of relatively large area as compared with the lateral dispersion of the plume. When such a condition is not satisfied, the method of Buscheck and Alcantar (1995) overestimates the biodegradation rate due to its usage of a solution to a one-dimensional advection-dispersion equation that does not consider lateral dispersion and finite source size. It is also shown that the concentration of a two- or three-dimensional plume does not always decrease exponentially with the distance from the source along a plume centerline. An improved method based on multidimensional solutions of Domenico (1987) is proposed. In using the improved method, observed concentrations are normalized by the error functions embedded in the solutions to two- or three-dimensional advection-dispersion equations for a continuous source of finite size. With the normalized concentrations and following the procedure of Buscheck and Alcantar (1995), one may estimate the biodegradation rate, which is usually smaller than that obtained with the original data. It is demonstrated with the field data presented by Buscheck and Alcantar (1995) at the Fairfax Terminal that the method of Buscheck and Alcantar (1995) indeed overestimates the biodegradation rate by 21% and 65% for a two-dimensional plume and for a three-dimensional plume, respectively.

    Notes: Abstract Transport of non-ergodic solute plumes by steady-state groundwater flow with a uniform mean velocity, μ, were simulated with Monte Carlo approach in a two-dimensional heterogeneous and statistically isotropic aquifer whose transmissivity, T, is log-normally distributed with an exponential covariance. The ensemble averages of the second spatial moments of the plume about its center of mass, 〈S i i (t)〉, and the plume centroid covariance, R i i (t) (i=1,2), were simulated for the variance of Y=log T, σ Y 2=0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 and line sources normal or parallel to μ of three dimensionless lengths, 1, 5, and 10. For σ Y 2=0.1, all simulated 〈S i i (t)〉−S i i (0) and R i i (t) agree well with the first-order theoretical values, where S i i (0) are the initial values of S i i (t). For σ Y 2=0.5 and 1.0 and the line sources normal to μ, the simulated longitudinal moments, 〈S 11(t)〉−S 11(0) and R 11(t), agree well with the first-order theoretical results but the simulated transverse moments 〈S 22(t)〉−S 22(0) and R 22(t) are significantly larger than the first-order values. For the same two larger values of σ Y 2 but the line sources parallel to μ, the simulated 〈S 11(t)〉−S 11(0) are larger than but the simulated R 11 are smaller than the first-order values, and both simulated 〈S 22(t)〉−S 22(0) and R 22(t) stay larger than the first-order values. For a fixed value of σ Y 2, the summations of 〈S i i (t)〉−S i i (0) and R i i , i.e., X i i (i=1,2), remain almost the same no matter what kind of source simulated. The simulated X 11 are in good agreement with the first-order theory but the simulated X 22 are significantly larger than the first-order values. The simulated X 22, however, are in excellent agreement with a previous modeling result and both of them are very close to the values derived using Corrsin's conjecture. It is found that the transverse moments may be significantly underestimated if less accurate hydraulic head solutions are used and that the decreasing of 〈S 22(t)〉−S 22(0) with time or a negative effective dispersivity, defined as , may happen in the case of a line source parallel to μ where σ Y 2 is small.

    Notes: The Al2O3/LiTaO3 (ALT) composite ceramics were fabricated by hot pressing methodand polarization treated at different temperatures along height and width directions. Effects ofpolarization treatment on mechanical properties of the ALT composite ceramic were investigated.Flexural strength decreased with the increase of polarization temperature. Meanwhile, the flexuralstrength of samples polarized in height direction is higher than that polarized in width direction. Thecomposite ceramic fractures intragranularly, and many rupture steps in polarization direction wereobserved on fractographs of the composite ceramics. Domain switching in LiTaO3 particlesincreased the resistance of crack propagation and improved the mechanical properties of thepolarized ALT composite ceramics
