    Notes: The sonic band-gap structures of 12-fold symmetry quasicrystals consisting of rigid cylinders in air are investigated by using the multiple scattering method. Large full gaps are found in this system owing to its high symmetry. At filling fractions between 0.2 and 0.4, this 12-fold square–triangle tiling is much better for the realization of sonic band gaps than the square or triangular lattice. This makes the 12-fold quasicrystal a promising structure for acoustic-wave band-gap materials. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Based on the one-band tight-binding model, we systematically investigate the interlayer exchange coupling and the angular dependence of the coupling energy in a magnetic sandwich covered on both sides by nonmagnetic films. Our results show that (i) the thickness of magnetic and outer nonmagnetic films influence significantly the oscillatory behavior of exchange coupling, (ii) the appearance of noncollinear exchange coupling is very sensitive to the thickness of magnetic and outer nonmagnetic layers, (iii) the nonoscillatory component of the coupling varies generally with the thickness of magnetic or outer nonmagnetic films, and (iv) the results in the case where the thickness of both magnetic or both outer nonmagnetic films vary simultaneously are significantly different from that in the case where the thickness of one of the two magnetic or outer nonmagnetic films is fixed while the other is varied. These results are qualitatively in agreement with the experimental measurements. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Based on the two-band model and free-electron approximation, we study the magnetism and transport properties of tunnel junctions with nonmagnetic interlayers (NM) between the ferromagnetic electrodes and tunneling barrier. We find that properties of the junctions are intermediate between tunnel junctions and metallic magnetic multilayers. The mean conductance, tunnel magnetoresistance, and interlayer coupling are all the oscillatory functions of the thickness of NM. It suggests that weak antiferromagnetic coupling can be attained by controlling the thickness of NM. Our results have potential in designing spin-polarized tunneling devices with large field sensitivity. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: By using a perturbative approach, we propose a simple, systematic, and efficient method to engineer acoustic band gaps. A gap can be enlarged or reduced by altering the microstructure according to the field-energy distributions of the Bloch states at the band edges as well as their derivatives. Due to the structure of the acoustic wave equation, the engineering of acoustic band gaps is much more efficient than that of photonic band gaps. The validity of the proposed method is supported by multiple-scattering calculations. Our method makes the acoustic band gap "designable." © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: One outstanding feature of the recent Arctic climate is the contrast of the changes of sea ice concentration and thickness between the Beaufort Sea and the Chukchi Sea. Since the Arctic Oscillation (AO) plays a critical role in driving Arctic sea ice changes and the Beaufort and Chukchi seas have been hypothesized as a region in which sea ice anomalies originate, we employed a coupled sea ice-ocean model and carried out simulations forced by the AO signal to examine sea ice changes in these regions, focusing on seasonality. With the AO phase transition from negative to positive, anticyclonic windstress weakens broadly in both winter and summer; however, the surface air temperature response shows remarkable seasonal dependence. Positive temperature anomalies spread over the entire domain in winter, while negative anomalies occur in the shelf seas in summer, although positive anomalies remain in the deep-water portion. The simulated sea ice concentration resembles the observed concentration. The strong seasonality of sea ice concentration changes suggests that accumulation of sea ice concentration in the Beaufort Sea and reduction in the Chukchi Sea are mainly produced in summer. Changes of ice thickness are robust through the seasonal cycle. Generally, sea ice dynamics play a critical role in creating the anomalous sea ice pattern and sea ice thermodynamics partially compensate the dynamically-driven changes. However, considerable seasonal differences occur.

    Notes: Abstract A real time simulator for infrared scenes is required to evaluate the performances of recognition and tracking of information processing machine in seeker. A real time simulator for infrared scenes composed of two Intel i860 processors is described in the paper. We first describe the hardware architecture of our system, then we give out schematic diagram illustrating how to compute the image sequences of infrared scenes based on our hardware system. Finally, experimental results indicate that the simulator can meet the needs of application in practice.

    Description: Phytoplankton in the ocean are extremely diverse. The abundance of various intracellular pigments are often used to study phytoplankton physiology and ecology, and identify and quantify different phytoplankton groups. In this study, phytoplankton absorption spectra (aph(λ)) derived from underway flow-through AC-S measurements in the Fram Strait are combined with phytoplankton pigment measurements analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to evaluate the retrieval of various pigment concentrations at high spatial resolution. The performances of two approaches, Gaussian decomposition and the matrix inversion technique are investigated and compared. Our study is the first to apply the matrix inversion technique to underway spectrophotometry data. We find that Gaussian decomposition provides good estimates (median absolute percentage error, MPE 21–34%) of total chlorophyll-a (TChl-a), total chlorophyll-b (TChl-b), the combination of chlorophyll-c1 and -c2 (Chl-c1/2), photoprotective (PPC) and photosynthetic carotenoids (PSC). This method outperformed one of the matrix inversion algorithms, i.e., singular value decomposition combined with non-negative least squares (SVD-NNLS), in retrieving TChl-b, Chl-c1/2, PSC, and PPC. However, SVD-NNLS enables robust retrievals of specific carotenoids (MPE 37–65%), i.e., fucoxanthin, diadinoxanthin and 19′-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin, which is currently not accomplished by Gaussian decomposition. More robust predictions are obtained using the Gaussian decomposition method when the observed aph(λ) is normalized by the package effect index at 675 nm. The latter is determined as a function of “packaged” aph(675) and TChl-a concentration, which shows potential for improving pigment retrieval accuracy by the combined use of aph(λ) and TChl-a concentration data. To generate robust estimation statistics for the matrix inversion technique, we combine leave-one-out cross-validation with data perturbations. We find that both approaches provide useful information on pigment distributions, and hence, phytoplankton community composition indicators, at a spatial resolution much finer than that can be achieved with discrete samples.
