Notes: Examines the vendor evaluation and selection models developed by many researchers during the past ten years. Some of these models are very simple and intuitive but some of them are more sophisticated and mathematically oriented. These models show supplier selection decision making processes based on a set of supplier performance criteria. Examines these models to find out if there is a need for a more representative model and develops a simple model for supplier evaluation and selection in an advanced manufacturing technologies' environment. The model offers decision makers a variety of scenarios on which they can select the best criterion or set of criteria for vendor evaluation and selection. Additionally, presents a numerical example to illustrate the model and to prove its practical utility.

Notes: Examines the issue of implementing quality management (QM) programmes in the hospitality industry by grouping the prescriptive literature into four research streams. Based on the literature, suggests a proactive approach to implementing QM in the hospitality industry. Finally, provides issues related to QM in the hospitality sector, which need to be addressed in the future.

Notes: Discusses various modes of interaction between suppliers and users of advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) and is based on empirical evidence originating from the study of 30 organizations representing ten suppliers and users. Highlights various key factors by closely scrutinizing the various modes of interaction during the implementation of various technological innovations. Notes that these factors are highly influential in the degree of success or otherwise for the implementation of AMT. In all, examines seven different types of innovation. These are: plastics injection moulding machines, CNC machines, computerized information systems, flexible manufacturing systems, material handling and supply, CADCAM and automated control systems. Reviews some relevant studies and discusses the critical factors in the diffusion of AMTs. Considers the benchmarking of the AMT's implementation and finally, discusses the factors which determine the effectiveness of supplier-customer interaction for the implementation of AMT.

Notes: Considerable research literature exists on production planning, distribution, and investment models. In most cases they have been treated independently in an environment of low inflation rates. Unfortunately, work extending these problems to multinational companies is sparse. This paper develops an integrated production planning, distribution, and investment model for a multinational firm that produces products in different countries and distributes them to geographically diverse markets. Since multinational corporations operate in different countries under varying exchange and inflation rates, varying opportunities for investing, and differing regulations, these factors should be included in the decision process. In the modeling, the paper incorporates these factors and elicits the performance of the model through an example and discusses the results. The results indicate that the exchange rates and initial capacity levels of the firms have significant effects on the production, distribution, and investment decisions, and consequently, on the profit.

Notes: Examines the impact of the intensity level of design formanufacturability (DFM) on the time-to-market. Hypothesizes thatcompanies which use the DFM technology strategically are more likelythan their counterparts to exhibit a shorter time-to-market, introducenew products and processes more often, and are more responsive to theircustomers needs. An index for measuring the intensity level of DFM isdeveloped. The analysis was based on data collected from 165manufacturing firms in three industry groups in US - industrialmachinery equipment, electronic and electric machinery equipment, andtransportation equipment. Suggests that differences in time-to-marketamong firms with different intensity level of DFM do exist. Shows theexistence of moderate association between DFM and time-to-market, andbetween DFM and introducing new products and new processes.

Notes: Examines design for manufacturability (DFM) which has become of aparamount interest to academicians and practitioners as well. Theemergence of advanced manufacturing and information technologies andrecent managerial philosophies such as JIT, TQM have made it easier formanufacturing enterprises to carry out many of their activitiesconcurrently. This new approach to business would no doubt result inincreased efficiency, as measured by cost savings, and increasedeffectiveness as measured by improvements in quality, flexibility, andresponsiveness. This new approach to manufacturing emphasizes thatsimultaneous improvement in these competitive priorities rather thantrade-offs will be the norm in many manufacturing establishments. Designfor manufacturability, as a time-based strategy, has been used by theJapanese for many years, and there is no reason to think that it willnot work for Western manufacturers. However, if not planned forcarefully, it can hurt rather than help manufacturing companies. In thecases that have been reported in literature so far, successes outnumberfailures. Sheds light on the theoretical foundation of DFM as atime-based technology. Examines the different approaches to product andprocesses design and compares and contrasts the traditional andconcurrent approaches to manufacturing. Examines a number of DFMdefinitions in an attempt to offer a more representative definition.Analyses the main pillars of DFM and explains the necessarycharacteristics for successful implementation of DFM. Elaborates thebenefits of DFM as reported in literature. Explains some of thedrawbacks of DFM and introduces the reader to Part 2 of this article.

Notes: Examines the impact of the intensity level of computer-basedtechnologies (CBTs) on quality. The intensity level of CBTs isempirically-based. The main thrust of the intensity level of CBTs isfourfold. First, the technology must, intuitively, exist. Second, itmust be integrated with other available technologies. Third, it must beutilized to a certain extent. Finally, it must have been used longenough to produce synergistic results. Determines whether there aredifferences in quality among firms with different intensity levels ofCBTs. The analysis was based on data collected from 165 manufacturingfirms in three industry groups in the USA. These are industrialmachinery equipment, electronic and electric machinery equipment, andtransport equipment. Descriptive statistics show the following: (1) thelevel of technology integration is low; (2) the level of programmableautomation is also low; (3) most of the CBTs are used as stand-alonetechnologies; and (4) most of the CBTs are used in the early stages ofdesigning the product. The results also suggested that differences inquality exist among groups with different intensity levels of CBTs.These findings have many implications for both practitioners andacademicians. For practitioners, the intensity level of CBTs, asoperationalized here, can be used by manufacturing firms as a vehicle tobenchmark their performance against that of their competitors. Foracademicians, introduces a new measure for operationalizing theintensity level of CBTs. Also discusses other implications.
