Notes: The de-wetting process of Zdol-type lubricants on hard disks has been studied at the molecular scale with scanning polarization force microscopy (SPFM) and ellipsometry. It was found that de-wetting occurred over hours to days when the initial lubricant layer was thicker than one monolayer (∼20 Å thick). De-wetting was found to take place in a layered fashion for Zdol-TX and Z-Tetraol, with weakly bound second layers accreting into droplets, however, no layering was seen for Zdol during de-wetting, only droplets. The droplets eventually grew to the point where they could be observed by optical microscopy. In all cases, the first monolayer remained bound to the surface. Although the atomic force microscopy (AFM) tip could easily penetrate this first layer, it did not remove it. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Rotational structures and angular momenta of the two observed [2Π3/2]4d gerade Rydberg states of bromine in the region 68 800–72 000 cm−1 have been studied by high resolution resonance enhanced (2+1) multiphoton ionization spectroscopy. The rotational constants have been obtained and the angular momenta of the two [2Π3/2]4d series have been assigned for the first time. These results are further determined and confirmed by computational spectral simulations. The angular momenta of the two observed [2Π3/2]4d Rydberg states are concluded to be Ω=1. Comparison is also made for these two Rydberg states.

Notes: The Surface Forces Apparatus was used to study the compression and drainage of perfluoropolyethers (PFPEs) between two flat parallel mica surfaces. In the case of Zdols and Demnum-SA, the PFPEs can be squeezed out during slow compression to a final residual film one gyration diameter in thickness. This thickness remained constant up to the highest applied pressure of ∼10 MPa. The residual thickness for Demnum-SA, with one active end group, was found to be approximately 40% larger than that for Zdol of the same molecular weight, with two active end groups. In contrast, Z03, with no active end groups, could be displaced completely from the contact. The dynamics of expulsion were studied by monitoring the variation of the gap width as a function of time after fast (a few milliseconds) step increase in the compressive load. It was found that Zdol behaves as the bulk liquid down to gap widths of four equivalent gyration diameters. A viscosity increase of more than ten times was observed when the gap width was between four and two gyration diameters. Finally, slow compression to the maximum achievable pressure (∼10 MPa) led to a residual layer one gyration diameter in thickness trapped between the mica surfaces. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Second-order nonlinearity (SON) of thermally poled PbO/B2O3 glass was investigated. The SON distribution within the glass was obtained by repeatedly grinding the poled glass and measuring its Maker fringes. After grinding away up to one third of the thickness of the poled sample, i.e., about 300 μm, clear fringes with the interference minimum not equal to zero could still be observed, indicating that the area of SON was not confined within thin layers near the two surfaces. Cathode side grinding and anode side grinding had quite different influences on the SON of the poled sample. A model of the anode-charge-layer dependent bulk electric field distribution was proposed and this electric field was regarded as playing a key role in the generation of a nonuniform bulk SON distribution in PbO/B2O3 glass. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A pulsed anodic etching method is developed to prepare light-emitting porous silicon. Under the same equivalent etching condition, pulsed etching can yield a more uniform porous silicon film with stronger photoluminescence intensity than the film prepared by ordinary dc etching. The atomic force microscopic observation shows that the porous silicon surface prepared by pulsed etching contains more widely separated Si columns but with steeper sidewalls, which are believed to result in the improvement of quantum confinement. The thickness of pulse etched porous silicon film is found to be much larger than that of a dc etched sample. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Hemicyanine-doped silica film was fabricated by sol–gel technique. Time evolution of structural changes in hemicyanine and their influence on the second-order optical nonlinearity were investigated through UV-visible absorption and second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements. We found that the conversion of protonated hemicyanine to monomeric and aggregated hemicyanine occurred within 4 h after film deposition. During this period of time the SHG signal continued to rise and finally reached the maximum. The growth of optical nonlinearity was mainly due to deprotonation of hemicyanine molecules. Blueshift of the absorption peaks for both aggregate and monomer were found during the drying of the film. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Rotational structure of [2Π3/2]6s:2g Rydberg state of bromine has been studied by high resolution resonance enhanced (2+1) multiphoton ionization spectroscopy and computational simulation. Excellent agreement between theoretical analysis and experimental results was achieved. Spectral difference for two-photon transitions to Rydberg states of [2Π3/2]6s:2g and [2Π3/2]4d:1g with different angular momenta Ω is discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Red clover flowers are a rich source of isoflavones in the forms of biochanin A, formononetin, genistein, and genistin. A simple process was developed to recover isoflavones from red clover flowers as a nutraceutical product. Isoflavones were 1st extracted in alkaline water and insoluble polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVP) was then added to the extract for adsorbing isoflavones. The adsorbed isoflavones were subsequently eluted with ethanol and dried. The main steps of this process were optimized for the product yield and quality. The final product was an isoflavone concentrate, containing more than 20 wt% isoflavones, which represented a recovery of greater than 50% of the total isoflavone amount in red clover flowers.

Notes: A new direct blind equalization algorithm is presented in this paper. It relies on the auto-correlation matrix of the channel, and adopts its eigenvector decomposition for designing an equalizer, which exploits the correlation characteristics of the channel. The proposed equalization is insensitive to the inaccuracy of the channel order estimation, and its data sequence length required for estimating the channel's correlation matrix is shorter than that of the other eigenvector decomposition methods that assumed that the channel order was known or had been estimated. Simulation results show that this algorithm is capable of acquiring a good performance under lower SNR in a communication system employing 16-QAM modulation.
