Abstract: This book uses the concept of the region to introduce traditional Chinese villages in ten typical areas. Most of the villages have been included in the World Cultural Heritage List or the Tentative List and reflect the diversity of rural and traditional life. Richly illustrated with pictures of architectural decorations, dwellings, day-to-day country life and aerial views of settlements, it not only enhances readers’ knowledge of China’s traditional architectural culture but also provides inspiration for architectural creation. It is a valuable resource for graduate students, lecturers and researchers in the field of traditional villages, heritage conservation and Chinese architectural culture.

Abstract: With the rapid increase of population, industrialization, urbanization, and the abuse of science and technology, environmental problems have showed an explosive development trend. Actions must be taken to ensure the rational exploitation and utilization of natural resources, prevent environmental pollution and ecological damage, and coordinate the relationship between environment and social development. Proceedings of 4th International Conference on Resources and Environmental Research (ICRER 2022) focuses on effective use of environmental resources, ecological restoration and remediation of degraded and polluted environment, and emission reduction technologies. This book brings the latest advances in resources and environmental research.

Notes: Dynamic interaction is investigated theoretically between a circular cavity and a cracknear the surface in a semi-infinite piezoelectric medium subjected to time-harmonic incidentanti-plane shearing in this paper. The formulations are based on the method of complex variable andGreen’s function. Dynamic stress concentration factors at the edge of the circular cavity anddynamic stress intensity factors at the crack tip are obtained by solving boundary value problemswith the method of orthogonal function expansion. The calculating results are plotted to show howthe frequencies and the orientation of incident wave, piezoelectric characteristic parameters of thematerial and the structural geometries influence upon the dynamic stress concentration factor(DSCF) and dynamic stress intensity factor (DSIF)

Description: Background: More than 60 genetic susceptibility loci associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have been established in populations of Asian and European ancestry. Given ethnic differences and environmental factors, validation of the effects of genetic risk variants with reported associations identified by Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWASs) is essential. The study aims at evaluating the associations of T2DM with 29 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 19 candidate genes derived from GWASs in a northern Han Chinese population. Method: In this case-control study, 461 T2DM-diagnosed patients and 434 controls were recruited at the Jidong oil field hospital (Hebei, China) from January 2009 to October 2013. A cumulative genetic risk score (cGRS) was calculated by summation of the number of risk alleles, and a weight GRS (wGRS) was calculated as the sum of risk alleles at each locus multiplied by their effect sizes for T2DM, using the independent variants selected. Result: The allelic frequency of the “A” allele at rs17106184 (Fas-associated factor 1, FAF1) was significantly higher in the T2DM patients than that of the healthy controls (11.7% vs. 6.4%, p 〈 0.001). Individuals in the highestquartile of wGRS had an over three-fold increased risk for developing T2DM compared with those in the lowest quartile (odds ratio = 3.06, 95% CI = 1.92–4.88, p 〈 0.001) adjusted for age, sex, BMI, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). The results were similar when analyzed with the cGRS. Conclusions: We confirmed the association between rs17106184 (FAF1) and T2DM in a northern Han Chinese population. The GRS calculated based on T2DM susceptibility variants may be a useful tool for predicting the T2DM susceptibility.

Description: The great diversity of land plants (especially angiosperms) is mainly reflected in the diversity of various reproductive organs of plants. However, despite long time intensive investigations, there are still uncertainties and sometimes misunderstandings over the nature and evolution of reproductive organs in land plants. With the new advances made in various fields of botany (especially at molecular level), there is increasing light shed on some aspects of flowers (reproductive organs of angiosperms). In this ebook, we collect 15 papers reporting new understanding on plant reproductive organs. These works range from morphology and anatomy to molecular regulatory networks underlying traditional observations. We understand this single book cannot reach our goal, but we do hope that this book can contribute to or initiate some efforts leading to the final solution of some problems concerning the homology and evolution of reproductive organs in plants.

Notes: Summary The frequencies of alpha-1-antitrypsin alleles were determined for five Chinese national minorities: Uigur, Korean, Mongolian, Chuang, and Li. PI*S and PI*Z alleles are not found in the five populations studied. PI*ETOK allele is present in Korean, Mongolian, and Chuang populations, and Etokyo is a very common alpha-1-antitrypsin variant in Chinese. Other alleles which occur in more than one of the minorities are PI*X (Mongolian and Chuang) and PI*M4 (Korean and Uigur). The high frequency of PI*M4 in the Uigur population suggests a probably Occidental origin of this nationality.

Notes: Summary Alpha-1-antitrypsin phenotypes of six Chinese Han populations (20°–45°N. latitude) were determined. The frequency of allele M2 increases from North to South China. The north-south change of M2 appears to be mainly at the expense of alleles M1 and M3. Geographical variability of other variants was also observed. In the northern populations, the most common variants are M4 and Etokyo; in the southern populations, Pweishi, a variant which can not be distinguished electrophoretically from Pyasugi. These results form a distribution pattern of alpha-1-antitrypsin alleles in China.

Notes: Abstract Wiighted residual solutions are presented for thermal bending of laminated composite plates. The material of each layer is assumed to be clastically and thermoelastically orthotropic and bimodular. The formulations are based on the thermoclastic version of the theory of Whitney-Pagano laminated plate, which includes thickness shear detormations. The results are obtained for deflections and neutral-surface positions and are found to be in good agreement with the closed-form solution.
