Notes: Dielectric relaxation processes in organic monolayer films during heating are analyzed on the basis of the rotational Debye–Brownian motion equation. Theoretical formula for the thermally stimulated current (TSC) is obtained. The polar orientational disordering of polarized and nonpolarized monolayers is examined by taking into account the dielectric relaxation time τ of monolayers. TSCs across phospholipid monolayers of L-α-dimyristoyl, phosphatidylcholine are discussed on the basis of the analysis developed here. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We build up a self-consistent equation and derive a general equation of orientational phase transition between a normal-director phase and a tilted-director phase for smectic monolayers on a water surface under monolayer compression with a consideration of molecular configuration. A differential dielectric constant for monolayer films is discovered and discussed. The change of the first orientational order parameter and the dielectric constant at the polar orientational phase transition point is also examined. It is found that the influence of the polar orientational phase transition on the first orientational order parameter in monolayer films is clear compared with that on the dielectric constant. This reveals that Maxwell-displacement-current measuring technique would be a useful way to measure such a phase transition. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The generation of Maxwell displacement current (MDC) across nematic liquid crystal (LC) cells triggered by the conformational change of surface monolayers is analyzed. It is theoretically shown that the change in the internal electric field formed in LC cells by the polarized surface monolayers and the change in the capacitance of LC cells due to the change in the orientational alignment of LCs are responsible for the generation of MDC. Based on this theoretical analysis, we discuss MDCs across p-pentyl-p-cyano-biphenyl LC cells induced by photoisomerization of surface azobenzene monolayers. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We give a general expression of the dielectric constant tensor in orientational orders in the applied static or low-frequency electric field for the semi-two-dimensional monolayer films with C∞v symmetry. The dielectric anisotropic orientational tensor and orientational polarization tensor are derived in orientational order parameters. The nonlinear electro-optical Pockels effect including the local-field influence is also discussed using the orientational orders. A numerical calculation result shows that the first orientational order parameter S1 is a destructive order while the second orientational orientational order parameter S2 is a constructive one to the dielectric constant in the normal direction of monolayer films. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Mixed Langmuir films composed of the left- and right-handed chiral enantiomers are analyzed using a model based on the Bragg–Williams theory for binary mixtures, and the contribution of the mixing effect to the generation of Maxwell displacement current (MDC) and surface pressure-area isotherm is discussed. It is revealed that the formation of the homogeneous and intimate mixture of the left- and right-handed chiral enantiomers gives rise to the additional MDC generation due to the dipole–dipole interaction between the left- and right-handed chiral enantiomer molecules by the molecular twist transition during monolayer compression. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Based on Maxwell displacement current (MDC) and surface pressure measurements by monolayer compression, the physicochemical properties of chiral and racemic phospholipid [α-phosphatidylcholine dipalmitoyl (DPPC)] monolayers at the air–water interface were investigated. It was found that at a temperature of 20 °C, the chiral and racemic phospholipid monolayers exhibited similar pressure-area isotherms with a pressure plateau between 65 and 85 Å2, usually attributed to the two-dimensional (2D) phase transition from expanded monolayer to condensed one. Nevertheless, with MDC measurement some critical peaks in the 2D pressure plateau region with different amplitude and sign were detected related to the chirality of the phospholipid samples. This result clearly demonstrates that microscopic chirality affects the electrical properties of monolayers. To investigate the chiral effect theoretically, a twist-conformation molecular model was raised by a modification of the simple rodlike model and biaxial rodlike model, which were developed in our previous work. The analysis based on this modified model reveals that the monolayer properties, especially the MDC behavior by compression, are profoundly influenced by the chirality of molecules. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A smectic liquid-crystal phase formed by achiral banana-shaped molecules (CB2) is studied as one-dimensional piezoelectric crystals with fluidity of tilted-C2V anisotropy in the other two spatial dimensions. Variation of the elastic-piezoelectric free energy of the system predicts the existence of racemic (R), left-, and right-handed chiral (H) antiferroelectric equilibrium structures, a result in agreement with the observation by Link et al. [Science 278, 1924 (1997)]. The electric-field-induced ferroelectric state is shown to be a special C2 symmetry, which confirms the measurements by optical second harmonic generation in a CB2 by Macdonald et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 4408 (1998)]. The hysteresis loop of switching polarization is also discussed, and the molecular tilt angle dependence of spontaneous polarization is obtained as a function of the elastic and the piezoelectric constants. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: novel duplex coating is presented on steel substrate by laser discrete quenching prior tochromium coating deposition. Due to the periodical changes in the mesostructures and properties ofunderlying substrate, the cracking and spalling behaviors of the duplex coating are expected to bedifferent from that of conventional coating. A classic erosion experiment is selected to characterizethe positive response of the duplex coating subjected to thermal loads. It is found that the surfacecracking is partly restrained and the interface cracking is partly arrested. FEM modeling resultsshow that a unique stress state is induced in the duplex coating with the tempering of the discretepre-quenched regions due to thermal loading, which is believed to be the mechanism of controllingthe damage modes
