Notes: In a national survey of the incidence of powdery mildew (Erysiphe betae) in sugar beet in Britain, between 1980 and 1989, in which between 335 and 717 fields were inspected at the end of August each year, the average crop area infected ranged from 2% in 1986 to 68% in 1989. The effect of various climatic factors that might be expected to influence powdery mildew development over this period was examined, using meteorological records from Broom's Barn Experimental Station, Using simple linear regression analyses, a significant association was found between disease incidence and both air temperature and rainfall incidence in the period April-August, However, air temperature and frost incidence in some winter months were also closely associated with the incidence of powdery mildew in the following crop.Combinations of these variables were examined in stepwise multiple-regression analyses, The model of best fit, incorporating winter frost incidence with summer temperature and rainfall incidence, accounted for 95% of the variation. Model validation procedures demonstrated the superiority of this model over those involving single variables. Nevertheless, for forecasting purposes, the best correlation was found between the crop area infected at the end of August each year and the number of days with a ground frost in the preceding February and March. This single climatic variable accounted for 82% of the variation and its potential use to forecast powdery mildew incidence in the national sugar-beet crop is discussed.

Notes: [Auszug] HUNT'S1 investigation of the meteorological effects of a faster rotating Earth has application to palaeoclimatology, but his findings cannot explain the occurrence or character of the several late Precambrian glaciations. Hunt's1 article does not distinguish between middle and late Precambrian. ...

Notes: [Auszug] The animals used were male albino rats weighing 118-180 g from a colony of Wistar origin. Groups of animals were bilaterally adrenalectomized and maintained on a normal diet (M.B.C. diet 14B) with 0-9 per cent sodium chloride solution as their water supply. In addition, one kidney was removed from ...

Notes: [Auszug] I WAS informed by Mr. J. H. Duggan that enormous numbers of molluscs had been thrown up on the coast between Southport and Hightown on October 28. They then formed a continuous belt averaging six feet in width and ten inches in depth at the crest, extending nine miles from Southport towards ...

Notes: Abstract A sequence of 1337 laminae of cyclically varying thickness, interpreted as periglacial varves, obtained from drill cores of the late Precambrian Elatina Formation may record by proxy an ancient solar activity cycle similar to that of the present epoch Sun. This inferred ancient activity cycle, represented by a sequence of 110 varve-cycles, has a variable period which approximates a normal distribution (chi square = 3.5), with mean and median values of 12 varve years, standard deviation 1.6 varve years, and maximum variability of ± 4 varve years. The time-sequence of varve-cycle periods consists of both deterministic and stochastic elements. The intrinsic period of the varve-cycle is modulated principally by a longer period of ∼ 160 varve years, during which the varve-cycle period displays superimposed stochastic variation. The power spectral density of the varve thickness sequence is endowed with a strong multiplet of spectral lines centered on the median period, a second weaker multiplet at ∼ 22–25 varve years, and several very long periods. The line spacing within the multiplets favors a separation of period mainly of about 160 varve years, while the superimposed random variability of the varve-cycle period is expressed in the amplitude of the sideband envelope. Running autocorrelation of the varve sequence supports the interpretation of frequency modulation (deviation ratio ∼ 1.5) of the late Precambrian solar activity cycle principally by a period of ∼ 160 varve years.

Notes: [Auszug] Climatic cyclicity is recorded by regular variations in the thickness of varves in the Elatina Formation, a late Precambrian periglacial lake deposit in South Australia. Earlier conclusions that the climatic cycles reflect solar variability are strongly supported by a complexity of periods revealed ...

Notes: [Auszug] The frog is a male with the back and legs an evenly coloured yellow and the ventral surface a whiter tone. The thumb pads are a dark brown and the eyes a bright red. Notes: [Auszug] Cycles conspicuous in late Precambrian (∼680 Myr) glacial varves in Australia reveal strong climatic periods of about 11, 22, 145 and 290 yr and a weaker period near 90 yr. The 11-, 22- and 90-yr cycles equate with sunspot periods, and the longer cycles with solar and climatic periods as ...

Notes: Abstract New observations from two late Precambrian (~800-650 Ma) sedimentary rhythmites in South Australia (Reynella Siltstone and Chambers Bluff Tillite) reveal cycles structurally similar to the ~12-laminae cycles of the ~650-Ma Elatina Formation but which comprise from 15 to 26 or more laminae. The new data are difficult to accomodate in depositional models for the Elatina Formation whereby its laminae are regarded as annual and the cyclicity ascribed to solar variability (Williams and Sonett, 1985) or to the combined influences of the sunspot cycle and the lunar nodal tide (Zahnle and Walker, 1987). If, however, the long-term ‘Elatina Cycle’ and not the individual lamina is taken as a yearly climatic signal, the Elatina and other rhythmites studied may be interpreted as the deposits of marine ebb-tidal deltas that record variability in the velocity and range of paleo-ebb tides. The basic laminae-cycles would represent lunar fortnightly cycles of diurnal and/or semidiurnal laminae, commonly truncated through non-deposition at neap tides. Despite numerous empirical similarities between the Elatina and sunspot series, the ebb-tidal model for deposition is preferred because it accounts plausibly for observations from all three rhythmites studied.
