    Notes: Potential energy surfaces of 12 electronic states of TcH2 and RuH2 are obtained using a complete active space MCSCF (CASSCF) followed by multireference singles + doubles configuration interaction calculations (MRSDCI). The 6S ground state of Tc has to surmount a barrier of 40 kcal/mol to insert into H2 while the 5F ground state of Ru inserts into H2 with a much smaller barrier of 8.5 kcal/mol. The excited 6D, 4D, and doublet states of Tc atom insert into H2 spontaneously. The ground state of TcH2 is a linear 6Σ+g state arising from the 6S state of the Tc atom, while the ground state of RuH2 is of bent equilibrium geometry with 3A2 symmetry. A nearly degenerate bent state of 3B1 symmetry also exists for RuH2 . The bent minima of TcH2 are at least 0.9 eV above the linear 6Σ+g ground state of TcH2 . The ground state of RuH2 is 35 kcal/mol more stable than Ru(3F) + H2 while the 6Σ+g ground state of TcH2 is 27 kcal/mol more stable than Tc(6S)+H2 . All the bent states of TcH2 and RuH2 are ionic exhibiting strong M+H− polar bonds. The M–H bonds are made of dsp hybrid bonds as evidenced from Mulliken population analyses.

    Notes: Two sensitive polarized spectroscopies, reflectance difference spectroscopy and photocurrent difference spectroscopy, are used to study the characteristic of the in-plane optical anisotropy in the symmetric and the asymmetric (001) GaAs/Al(Ga)As superlattices (SLs). The anisotropy spectra of the symmetric and the asymmetric SLs show significant difference: for symmetric ones, the anisotropies of the 1HH→1E transition (1H1E) and 1L1E are dominant, and they are always approximately equal and opposite; while for asymmetric ones, the anisotropy of 1H1E is much less than that of 1L1E and 2H1E, and the anisotropy of 3H2E is very strong. The calculated anisotropy spectra within the envelope function model agree with the experimental results, and a perturbation approach is used to understand the role of the electric field and the interface potential in the anisotropy. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Self-assembled InAs quantum dots (QDs) have been grown by solid-source molecular beam epitaxy on a (311)B InP substrate. Transmission electron microscopy clearly shows that a high density of smaller InAs islands can be obtained by using such a high index substrate. After introducing a lattice-matched underlying In0.52Al0.24Ga0.24As layer, the InAs QDs are much more uniform in size and form two-dimensional well ordered arrays. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra also confirm that the InAs QDs grown on underlying In0.52Al0.24Ga0.24As have a better quality than those grown in the In0.52Al0.48As matrix. A simple calculation indicates that the redshift of the PL peak energy mainly results from InAs QDs on underlying In0.52Al0.24Ga0.24As of large size. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: InAs quantum dots (QDs) grown on GaAs surface are investigated. The observed abnormal photoluminescence (PL) properties, including extremely sharp high-energy peaks, almost temperature-independent linewidth, and fast thermal quenching, are discussed in terms of the strong quantum confinement effects due to the absence of a cap layer and the lack of carrier redistribution channel caused by the small number of QDs capable of contributing to PL and the high-density surface defects. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The optical properties of InAs quantum dots in n–i–p–i GaAs superlattices are investigated by photoluminescence (PL) characterization. We have observed an anomalously large blueshift of the PL peak and increase of the PL linewidth with increasing excitation intensity, much smaller PL intensity decrease, and faster PL peak redshift with increasing temperature as compared to conventional InAs quantum dots embedded in intrinsic GaAs barriers. The observed phenomena can all be attributed to the filling effects of the spatially separated photogenerated carriers. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A very restricted amount of high-molecular-weight double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) has been found in healthy japonica rice plants. We discriminated dsRNA-carrying rice plants from noncarriers. The endogenous dsRNA was localized in the cytoplasm (about 100 copies per cell) and was transmissible to progeny plants by mating. In crosses between carriers and noncarriers, the RNA was transmitted efficiently to F1 plants via both egg and pollen. The rice dsRNA was maintained at an almost constant level by host plant cells from generation to generation. The high-efficiency transmission of the endogenous dsRNA to progeny plants appears to depend on the autonomously controlled replication of the dsRNA localized in cytoplasmic vesicles. However, an increase in copy number (about 10-fold) of the dsRNA was observed during the suspension culture of host cells. The number of copies of dsRNA returned to the original low value in regenerated plants, suggesting that the copy number is stringently and developmentally regulated in rice cells.

    Notes: Summary Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) was isolated from rice Oryza sativa ssp. japonica, but not from other subspecies. The dsRNA has been found in all of the examined cytoplasmic male-sterile (CMS) lines of BT (Chinsurah Boro II)-type rice, but was not detected in their companionate maintainer lines. It is uniquely and positivley correlated with the CMS trait in BT-type rice. Recently, the dsRNA was also found in a nuclear malesterile (NMS) rice, Nongken 58s, but was not found in its normal Nongken 58. The molecular weight of this dsRNA was estimated to be about 18 kb. Electron microscopic analysis reveals that it is linear snapped. The double strandedness of the RNA molecules was characterized by CF-11 cellulose column chromatography and nuclease treatments. It bound to CF-11 cellulose in the presence of 15% ethanol. It was sensitive to RNase A at low salt concentrations, but insensitive to DNase I, SI nuclease, and RNase A at high salt concentrations. The dsRNA was detected in both mitochondrial and cytoplasmic fractions. Dot-blot hybridization reveals that there is no sequence homology between this dsRNA and mtDNA, but there is homology between this dsRNA and nuclear genomic DNA. We have not been able to transmit this dsRNA to fertile rice.
