Notes: A simple and sensitive method has been developed for measuring the absolute current density profile of a focused gallium-ion beam down to six orders of magnitude below its peak intensity. This method exploits both physical sputtering and a chemical etch-stop mechanism that occurs on Si(100) substrates after Ga-ion implantation. Sputtering creates craters on the substrate while the ion implanted area becomes insoluble in aqueous NaOH. This etch-stop layer can be used as negative resistance for creating hillocks on the substrate. By measuring the topographs of sputtered craters and etched hillocks using atomic force microscopy, the absolute current density profile of the focused ion beam is deduced. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this letter, the spatial correlation model has been used for interpreting the line shapes of the first-order longitudinal-optical phonon Raman spectra of ZnSe/GaAs epitaxial layers. The good agreement between theoretical line shapes and the experiment measurements was illustrated for the samples grown by the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), hot wall epitaxy (HWE), and hot wall beam epitaxy (HWBE).

Notes: Two molecular genetic screening techniques, RAPD (random amplified polymorphic DNAs) and ISSR (inter-simple sequence repeats), were applied to detect the level and pattern of genetic diversity of Monochoria vaginalis, a common weed of rice fields, in seven populations from southern China. Among these populations, 116 bands were amplified by 18 RAPD primers, of which 34 bands (29.31%) were polymorphic, and 14 ISSR primers produced 111 bands with 87 polymorphic bands (78.38%). Within each population, a relatively low level of genetic diversity was detected by both RAPD and ISSR analyses, with a mean genetic diversity (H) of 0.0348 and 0.0551 respectively. Analysis of molecular variance of the data from the RAPD and ISSR markers detected that the majority of total genetic variation existed among populations (73.50% and 76.70% respectively) and only minor genetic variation within populations (26.50% and 23.30% respectively). Cluster analysis divided the seven populations into two groups, indicating that the genetic relationships among populations have relatively low correlation with their geographical distribution (Mantel test; r = 0.45 and 0.48 respectively). Our results indicated that both RAPD and ISSR markers were effective and reliable for accurately assessing the degree of genetic variation of M. vaginalis. Comparing the two techniques, ISSR markers were more efficient than the RAPD assay. The Mantel test gave r = 0.16, suggesting no correlation between these two molecular markers.

Notes: Summary The ultrastructure of a microsporidiumNosema mesnili found in the Malpighian tubules ofPieris canidia is described. The life cycle includes meronts, sporonts, sporoblasts, and spores, with typical diplokaryon in each stage. The first two stages are amorphous forms with the former having a thinner cell wall. The spore has 11 coils of the polar filament. This protozoan is a chronic pathogen to its insect host and might have potential as a biological control agent.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a detailed theoretical description of the triple (e, γ1, γ2) coincidences in the decay of 3D states of helium initially excited by electron impact. Coincidence intensities for all possible experimental settings including various linear and circular polarization analyses were calculated with the aid ofMathematica, an algebraic computing package.

Notes: Abstract We report new results of the Stokes parametersP 1 toP 4 and of the coherence parametersP lin, γ a , ρ00 andL ∝ for He(31 D) excitation by electron impact in the energy range 40 eV to 81.6 eV obtained by the scattered electron-polarized photon coincidence technique. The present results are, where available, in fair agreement with previous measurements of other groups but disagree with the available calculations based on different models.

Notes: To improve the fracture toughness of PMR-15 polyimide and to alleviate its high susceptibility to microcracking induced by thermal cycling, a thermoplastic polyimide, LARC-TPI, was incorporated to form a sequential semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-2 IPN). The imidization kinetics of LARC-TPI in the semi-IPNs were studied using a thermal gravimetric analyzer. Both the solvent and the glass transition temperature of the semi-IPN were found to have significant effects on the imidization kinetics. The kinetics could be modeled by a two-step reaction: the first step being a second-order reaction followed by a second step, which is a first-order diffusion-controlled reaction. Differential scanning calorimetry was chosen to investigate the curing of PMR-15 and PMR-15/LARC-TPI semi-IPNs. The curing process was well correlated by a first-order reaction kinetics, which suggested that the reverse Diels-Alder reaction of the Norbornene end group was the rate controlling step. The glass transition temperatures of these semi-IPNs were again found to play important an important role in dictating the curing kinetics. A higher proportion of LARC-TPI or a higher glass transition temperature of the semi-IPN prepolymer tended to result in a slower curing reaction. The optimum molding cycle of PMR-15 and PMR-15/LARC-TPI semi-IPNs were then determined from the obtained kinetics. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Graphite fiber reinforced epoxy composites normally exhibit low impact strength, poor delamination resistance, and low damage tolerance. Because delamination is a matrix-dominated failure mode, tougher matrix resins may be utilized to reduce or eliminate the adverse effects of delamination on the structural integrity of fiber composites. The effects of modifying epoxy network morphology by introducing polyurethane in the form of an interpentrating network were studied. The compatibility, toughness, and tensile properties of the matrix as well as the properties of the resultant laminates were evaluated. One of the conclusions arising was that the interpenetrating network morphology results in superior resin and composites toughness with increasing polyurethane content. However, the benefits of increased resin toughness did not necessarily translate into proportionally increased composite owing to the geomertical limitations placed on the plastic deformation zones in laminates.
