    Notes: Abstract The paper presents a theory of a device for the accurate determination of the density of fluids over a wide range of thermodynamic states. The instrument is based upon the measurement of the characteristics of the resonance of a circular section tube, or rod, performing steady, transverse oscillations in the fluid. The theory developed accounts for the fluid motion external to the rod as well as the mechanical motion of the rod and is valid over a defined range of conditions. A complete set of working equations and corrections is obtained for the instrument which, together with the limits of the validity of the theory, prescribe the parameters of a practical design capable of high accuracy.

    Notes: Abstract The paper presents a complete theory for a viscometer based upon the principle of a circular-section rod, immersed in a fluid, performing transverse oscillations perpendicular to its axis. The theory is established as a result of a detailed analysis of the fluid flow around the rod and is subject to a number of criteria which subsequently constrain the design of an instrument. Using water as an example it is shown that a practical instrument can be designed so as to enable viscosity measurement with an accuracy of ±0.1%, although it is noted that many earlier instruments failed to satisfy one or more of the newly-established constraints.

    Notes: Abstract This paper presents a complete analysis of the theory of an instrument to measure the diffusion coefficients in liquid mixtures based upon the phenomenon of Taylor dispersion. The analysis demonstrates that it is possible to design an instrument that operates very nearly in accordance with the simplest mathematical description of the dispersion of a solute pulse in a fluid in laminar flow within a straight, circular cross-section tube. The small departures of a practical instrument from the ideal are evaluated as corrections by means of a general perturbation treatment that allows them to be examined one at a time. The corrections considered include the effects of the finite volume of the injection pulse, the finite volume of the concentration monitor, the coiling of the tube, and the nonuniformity and noncircularity of the cross section, as well as the variation of the fluid properties with composition. All the equations necessary for the design of an instrument of this type, and for the evaluation of experimental data free from significant systematic errors, are presented.

    Notes: Abstract An extension of an earlier procedure for the evaluation of the viscosity of very dense gas mixtures is proposed. The scheme is based upon the rigid-sphere theory of dense fluids, which is modified to take into account the behavior of real gases in a self-consistent manner. In particular, it is shown that a pseudoradial distribution function for each pure gas constructed from pure component viscosity data is a smooth function of density and is well behaved in limits of both high and low density. The method proposed removes the restrictions on the range of applicability of earlier methods. Comparisons with the limited amount of experimental information available indicate that the procedure allows evaluation of the viscosity of gas mixtures to within a few percent.

    Notes: Abstract This paper reports the results of new, absolute measurements of thermal conductivity of isopentane in the temperature range 307–335 K at pressures up to 0.4 GPa. The experimental data have an estimated uncertainty of ±0.3%. The density dependence of the thermal conductivity along the various isotherms has been represented with the aid of a single universal equation derived for a series of alkanes and based upon the hard-sphere model of dense fluids. An even more general prediction scheme for the thermal conductivity of liquids developed initially for normal alkanes is found to predict the present data within ±5%.

    Notes: Abstract A new treatment of the effect of the work of compression upon thermal conductivity measurements by the transient hot-wire technique is presented. The new analysis improves upon those given earlier and leads to quite a different result. The result makes it clear that the dilute gaseous state need not be excluded from the range of thermodynamic states in which accurate measurements are made owing to this effect, in contrast to the conclusions of earlier work.

    Notes: Abstract This paper reports new measurements of the viscosity of R32 and R125, in both the liquid and the vapor phase, over the temperature range 220 to 343 K near the saturation line. The measurements in both liquid and vapor phases have been carried out with a vibrating-wire viscometer calibrated with respect to standard reference values of viscosity. It is estimated that the uncertainty of the present viscosity data is one of 0.5–1%, being limited partly by the accuracy of the available density data. The experimental data have been represented by polynomial functions of temperature for the purposes of interpolation.

    Notes: Abstract A new apparatus for the measurement of liquid densities at high pressures is presented. The instrument is a development of a vibrating-wire densimeter described earlier and uses the buoyancy force exerted by the sample fluid on an immersed buoy to alter the tension of a wire from which it is suspended. The tension of the wire is related to its resonant frequency under steady-state transverse vibrations through a rigorous theoretical model which includes a complete analysis of the hydrodynamic effect of the fluid surrounding the wire. The present instrument uses a new design for the measuring cell with the purpose of relieving the degeneracy of perpendicular oscillation modes of the vibrating wire. The modifications lead to a significant increase in the precision of the results. Tests performed on the new apparatus and the operating procedure used, which requires the determination of one cell parameter from one density datum at atmospheric pressure, are described. New results for the density of liquid 2,2,4-trimethylpentane at temperatures from 298.15 to 348.15 K and pressures up to 100 MPa are presented. The data obtained have a precision of ±0.05% at a 2a level and an estimated accuracy of approximately ±0.1%.
