Notes: Abstract Cobalt–nickel alloys were electrodeposited in an acid bath containing various ratios of metallic cations. The effect of the plating variables on the composition and morphology of the deposits obtained on vitreous carbon electrodes was investigated. Different proportions of the two metals can be obtained by using different deposition parameters, but at all Co(ii)/Ni(ii) ratios studied, preferential deposition of cobalt occurs and anomalous codeposition takes place. For a fixed solution composition, the nickel content in the deposit is enhanced by increasing the deposition potential. More homogeneous and fine-grained deposits can be obtained by increasing the cobalt(ii)/nickel(ii) ratio in solution and by ensuring that deposition takes place slowly. Deposits of constant composition throughout the depth of the deposit can be obtained only by stirring the solution during the deposition. In addition, the solution must be stirred in order to minimize the increase in local pH and to prevent hydroxide precipitation. An attempt was made to explain the anomalous codeposition. The results suggest the following sequence of events: first, nickel is deposited; then, cobalt(ii) adsorbs onto the freshly deposited nickel and begins to be deposited. The cobalt(ii) adsorption inhibits subsequent deposition of nickel, although it does not block it completely.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In this paper we have used Wittrick's theory on the propagation of deformation waves in a coiled wire — taking only into account the coupling between the displacements of the wire cross-section along the tangent and along the binormal of the average helix — in oder to show how the natural frequencies of the axial and rotational modes of a cylindrical helical spring vary according to a non-linear function of the wave number. Moreover it is here demonstrated that the natural frequencies resulting from the proposed theory for the natural modes to which correspond wave lengths greater than two coils do not differ much from those which can be calculated by considering the spring as a periodic discrete system. Theoretical results are finally tested by an appropriate experimental investigation.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In this paper we have calculated the natural frequencies of the transverse vibrations of cylindrical helical springs, with respect to the variation in slenderness and relative compression. The calculation was made by considering the spring as a constant-section beam, and by applying Timoshenko theory to the latter. The theoretical section of this paper is an extension of Haringx's work on the same subject, not so much because it studies natural modes higher than the first (a problem which was treated by Haringx), but rather because its more general approach to the transverse vibrations phenomenon raises problems of results' interpretation that this Author did not face. The calculated values of natural frequencies and the corresponding deflection curves have been compared with experimentally determined values. In the course of experimentation Thickness-shear modes were visualized, which Timoshenko theory takes into account, but which, as far as beams are concerned, are not detectable.

Description: A total of 140 sets of parameters (a and b) of the length-weight relationships (LWR) of the form W=aL super(b) are presented for fishes caught in Cuban waters. These parameters cover 94 species of fish belonging to 43 families. Most of the parameters were compiled from 107 sets of published and unpublished studies. Twenty-five sets of parameters were from personal communications through colleagues in Cuba, while the remaining eight sets were estimated by the authors from unpublished data.
