Notes: Magnetic properties are presented of amorphous wires covered by glass, with the compositions Fe65B15Si15C5, Fe60B15Si15Cr10, and Fe40Ni40P14B6, which were prepared by melting the alloy in glass tubes and drawing fibers from the softened glass. The magnetization, the remanence, and the coercive force of the samples covered by glass, and of those obtained after removing the glass cover, were measured at a field of 2054 A/m. These amorphous wires have a square-shaped hysteresis loop, a value of the coercive force ranging between 255 and 462 A/m and an axial magnetization of 0.21–0.32 T for different compositions. The glass removal leads to an increase in magnetization and a decrease in the coercive force. The influence of a passing dc current through the wire during measurements has also been studied, influence that is much pronounced in the case of the wires obtained after removing the glass cover. The observed different magnetic properties of the amorphous magnetostrictive wires are attributed to the difference in internal stress distribution produced during preparation of the samples.

Notes: Abstract A period of minimum solar activity in April and May 1996 was used to analyze full-disk CaK spectroheliograms with the aim of deriving the intensity thresholds of the quiet network and the plages by applying the so-called inflexion point method. The average network intensity threshold is found to be influenced mainly by the seeing, whereas the average plage threshold shows an increasing trend from disk center towards the solar limb. Both parameters are compared with the results of other authors.

Notes: [Auszug] Inflammation is a local immune response to 'foreign' molecules, infection and injury. Leukotriene B4, a potent chemotactic agent that initiates, coordinates, sustains and amplifies the inflammatory response, is shown to be an activating ligand for the transcription factor PPARα. ...

Notes: Abstract Various methods for measuring areas of sunspots and umbrae are compared to test their robustness against changing seeing conditions. The influence of the seeing is simulated by artificially degrading high-resolution sunspot images. A new procedure – the so-called inflexion point method – for area determinations is described. It is based on the calculation of the inflexion point contours of the two-dimensional sunspot intensity distribution. The areas derived with this method are much more stable against seeing influences than those obtained by the other procedures tested. The effect of the seeing on the measurements of the bolometric sunspot contrast and irradiance deficit produced by a sunspot is also studied.

Notes: Response surface methodology was applied to optimize the growth of the yeast Phaffia rhodozyma in continuous fermentation using peat hydrolysates as substrate. A second-order, complete, factorial design of the experiments was used to develop empirical models providing a quantitative interpretation of the relationships between the two variables studied, dilution rate and pH. Maximum biomass concentration in the fermentor was obtained by employing the following predicted optimum fermentation conditions: a dilution rate of 0.017/h and a pH level of 7.19. A verification experiment, conducted at previously optimized conditions for maximum biomass volumetric productivity (a dilution rate of 0.022/h, and a pH level of 6.90), produced values for biomass concentration, residual substrate concentration, biomass yield, and biomass volumetric productivity that were very close to the predicted values, indicating the reliability of the empirical model. The concentration of the pigment astaxanthin produced by the yeast under the optimized growth conditions was found to be 544 mg astaxanthin/kg dry cell biomass. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Phaffia rhodozyma NRRL Y-17268 cells were proliferated in xylose-containing media made from Eucalyptus wood. Wood samples were subjected to acid hydrolysis under mild operational conditions, and hydrolysates were neutralized with lime. Neutralized hydrolysates were treated with charcoal for removing inhibitors and then supplemented with nutrients to obtain culture media useful for proliferation of the red yeast P. rhodozyma. A set of experiments carried out in orbital shakers proved that hydrolysates containing 16.6 g xylose/L supplemented only with 3 g peptone/L performed well as fermentation media. At the end of experiments, xylose was depleted and 10.5 g cells/L were obtained. Biomass was highly pigmented and volumetric carotenoid concentrations up to 5.8 mg carotenoids/L (with 4.6 mg astaxanthin/L) were reached. Further experiments in batch fermentors using concentrated hydrolysates (initial xylose concentrations within 16.6 and 40.8 g/L) led to good biomass concentrations (up to 23.2 g cells/L) with increased pigment concentration (up to 12.9 mg total carotenoids/L, with 10.4 mg astaxanthin/L) and high volumetric rates of carotenoid production (up to 0.079 mg/L·h). © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
