    Notes: A piezoelectric microactuator for minimally invasive surgery procedures was developedusing the piezoelectric tube actuator. The tube was fabricated by electrophoretic deposition of a dopedPZT powders on the graphite rod substrate and co-sintering. The obtained tube shows maximumstrain 0.045% in 31 mode and coercive field 1.5 kV/mm under static condition. Under dynamiccondition, bending and longitudinal vibration modes can be identified from impedance spectrum andsimulation. Theoretical analysis indicates that the displacement of the two modes depends on thegeometry, material property, driving condition and damping conditions. The developed device usesbending mode to create rotation mechanical motion, and longitudinal mode to produce ultrasonicenergy to soften and break up the target into fragments

Protonated Dipyridylamine Salts with Different Anions: Monomeric Tetraphenylborate as well as Bis(trifluormethylsulfonate), Dimeric Squarate and Polymeric Chloride DihydrateDi(pyrid-2-yl)amine is monoprotonated by acetic, squaric as well as hydrochloric acid and diprotonated by trifluoromethylsulfonic acid. To explore the anion and hydrogen-bridge dependency of its salts, crystals of the monomeric tetraphenylborate, the dimeric squarate as well as the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonate) and the polymeric chloride hydrate have been grown and their structures determined: Separated by bulky tetraphenylborate anions, pyrid-2-yl(2′-pyridinium) amine cation contains an intramolecular hydrogen bridge N⊕H…N and is slightly folded. The squarate salt dimer exhibits additional bridges, N—H…O⊖ and O—H…O. The severely twisted di(2-pyridinium)amine dication is connected to its trifluormethylsulfonate counter anions by altogether three H-bridges, two N⊕H…O and one N—H…O. The chloride dihydrate crystallizes in layers of 16-membered rings, formed from three Cl anions and five water molecules. The diversity of the hydrogen-bridge dominated salt structures is discussed based on comparison with selected literature examples and on PM3 calculations.

    Description: Kelp are main iodine accumulators in the ocean, and their growth and photosynthesis are likely to benefit from elevated seawater CO2 levels due to ocean acidification. However, there are currently no data on the effects of ocean acidification on iodine metabolism in kelp. Here, we found that ocean acidification increases iodine accumulation in kelp‐based coastal food webs. There is a potential risk of iodine overconsumption in consumers of kelps if pCO­2 increases as projected for the coming decades. Abstract Kelp are main iodine accumulators in the ocean, and their growth and photosynthesis are likely to benefit from elevated seawater CO2 levels due to ocean acidification. However, there are currently no data on the effects of ocean acidification on iodine metabolism in kelp. As key primary producers in coastal ecosystems worldwide, any change in their iodine metabolism caused by climate change will potentially have important consequences for global geochemical cycles of iodine, including iodine levels of coastal food webs that underpin the nutrition of billions of humans around the world. Here, we found that elevated pCO2 enhanced growth and increased iodine accumulation not only in the model kelp Saccharina japonica using both short‐term laboratory experiment and long‐term in situ mesocosms, but also in several other edible and ecologically significant seaweeds using long‐term in situ mesocosms. Transcriptomic and proteomic analysis of S. japonica revealed that most vanadium‐dependent haloperoxidase genes involved in iodine efflux during oxidative stress are down‐regulated under increasing pCO2, suggesting that ocean acidification alleviates oxidative stress in kelp, which might contribute to their enhanced growth. When consumed by abalone (Haliotis discus), elevated iodine concentrations in S. japonica caused increased iodine accumulation in abalone, accompanied by reduced synthesis of thyroid hormones. Thus, our results suggest that kelp will benefit from ocean acidification by a reduction in environmental stress however; iodine levels, in kelp‐based coastal food webs will increase, with potential impacts on biogeochemical cycles of iodine in coastal ecosystems.

    Description: Small silencing RNAs, including microRNAs, endogenous small interfering RNAs (endo-siRNAs) and Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs), have been shown to play important roles in fine-tuning gene expression, defending virus and controlling transposons. Loss of small silencing RNAs or components in their pathways often leads to severe developmental defects, including lethality and sterility. Recently, non-templated addition of nucleotides to the 3' end, namely tailing, was found to associate with the processing and stability of small silencing RNAs. Next Generation Sequencing has made it possible to detect such modifications at nucleotide resolution in an unprecedented throughput. Unfortunately, detecting such events from millions of short reads confounded by sequencing errors and RNA editing is still a tricky problem. Here, we developed a computational framework, Tailor, driven by an efficient and accurate aligner specifically designed for capturing the tailing events directly from the alignments without extensive post-processing. The performance of Tailor was fully tested and compared favorably with other general-purpose aligners using both simulated and real datasets for tailing analysis. Moreover, to show the broad utility of Tailor, we used Tailor to reanalyze published datasets and revealed novel findings worth further experimental validation.     Description: Genotype imputation has been widely adopted in the postgenome-wide association studies (GWAS) era. Owing to its ability to accurately predict the genotypes of untyped variants, imputation greatly boosts variant density, allowing fine-mapping studies of GWAS loci and large-scale meta-analysis across different genotyping arrays. By leveraging genotype data from 90 whole-genome deeply sequenced individuals as the evaluation benchmark and the 1000 Genomes Project data as reference panels, we systematically examined four important issues related to genotype imputation practice. First, in a study of imputation accuracy, we found that IMPUTE2 and minimac have the best imputation performance among the three popular imputing software evaluated and that using a multi-population reference panel is beneficial. Second, the optimal imputation quality cutoff for removing poorly imputed variants varies according to the software used. Third, the major contributing factors to consistently poor imputation are low variant heterozygosity, high sequence similarity to other genomic regions, high GC content, segmental duplication and being far from genotyping markers. Lastly, in an evaluation of the imputability of all known GWAS regions, we found that GWAS loci associated with hematological measurements and immune system diseases are harder to impute, as compared with other human traits. Recommendations made based on the above findings may provide practical guidance for imputation exercise in future genetic studies.

    Description: The expression of DNA damage-binding protein 2 (DDB2) has been linked to the prognosis of ovarian cancer and its underlying transcription regulatory function was proposed to contribute to the favorable treatment outcome. By applying gene microarray analysis, we discovered neural precursor cell expressed, developmentally downregulated 4-Like (NEDD4L) as a previously unidentified downstream gene regulated by DDB2. Mechanistic investigation demonstrated that DDB2 can bind to the promoter region of NEDD4L and recruit enhancer of zeste homolog 2 histone methyltransferase to repress NEDD4L transcription by enhancing histone H3 lysine 27 trimethylation (H3K27me3) at the NEDD4L promoter. Given that NEDD4L plays an important role in constraining transforming growth factor β signaling by targeting activated Smad2/Smad3 for degradation, we investigated the role of DDB2 in the regulation of TGF-β signaling in ovarian cancer cells. Our data indicate that DDB2 enhances TGF-β signal transduction and increases the responsiveness of ovarian cancer cells to TGF-β-induced growth inhibition. The study has uncovered an unappreciated regulatory mode that hinges on the interaction between DDB2 and NEDD4L in human ovarian cancer cells. The novel mechanism proposes the DDB2-mediated fine-tuning of TGF-β signaling and its downstream effects that impinge upon tumor growth in ovarian cancers.

    Description: The well-known Welch–Gong (WG) stream cipher, proposed by Nawaz and Gong in 2005, was submitted to the hardware profile of the eSTREAM project. In the last several years, the original WG has come under several cryptanalytic attacks. However, as for the final version of WG, no attack has been published on it until now. In this paper, an efficient key recovery attack on the final WG stream cipher in the related key setting is proposed. Under related keys, we can recover the 128-bit secret key of WG-128 with a time complexity of $2^{89}$ and a memory complexity of $2^{45}$ . The success probability of the attack is 0.6321. This result shows that our attack on WG-128 is much better than an exhaustive key search in the related key setting. Furthermore, our cryptanalytic results show that WG with IV size no less than 80 bits is vulnerable to a related key attack. The main feature of our attack is that it is independent of the number of steps in the key/IV setup of WG, and then increasing the number of steps in the key/IV setup cannot strengthen the resistance of WG against a related key attack. Finally, a recommended approach to repair the weakness and strengthen the resistance of WG against a related key attack is presented.
