    Description: IPDPs (intervals of pulsations with diminishing periods) are a subset of EMIC waves. Pi1Bs (pulsations irregular 1Hz bursts) are ULF waves closely correlated with substorm onset. Prior research has indicated there may be a relationship between the two, but this relationship has not yet been fully fleshed out. In this presentation, we investigate the relationship between evening sector IPDPs and Pi1B. To do so we utilize searchcoil magnetometer, fluxgate magnetometer, riometer, and imaging riometer data from a collection of Antarctic ground stations (Halley Research Station, Neumayer, Maitri, Syowa, and Mawson) that span 10 degrees in CGM latitude, 4 hours in MLT, and L shells 4 through 9. We also utilize magnetometer data from satellites in conjunction including SWARM, which reveals a local unidentified ULF signature equatorward of the ground instrumentation (more work is required to fully understand this). From the ground instrumentation, we observe Pi1B in the late evening MLT region crossing over into the early dawn region, and IPDPs in the early evening MLT region. Despite the 4 hour range in MLT, we observe these events near simultaneously with only a ~15 minute delay between the start of the Pi1B and the start of the IPDP. We observe correlated cosmic noise absorption (CNA) that occurs simultaneously with and encompasses the full duration of these events. The ULF activity we observe aligns well with what we expect from previous work done on the subject-- IPDPs appear at lower geomagnetic latitudes (60-65 degrees) than Pi bursts, which are more prominent at ~70 degrees-- but the CNA we observe has less precedence in prior research. In this presentation, we describe our observations in detail as well as possible mechanisms that might link the Pi1B and IPDP waves, as well as the CNA.

    Description: The series of X and M class flares and associated coronal mass ejections that occurred on the first days of September 2017 induced significant perturbations on the low-latitude ionospheric electrodynamics. On 8 September in the Indian sector, the storm caused a severe modification of the equatorial electrojet (EEJ) with a consequent variation of the ionospheric structuring and dynamics. In our analysis, we propose an original method to isolate and identify EEJ variations from geomagnetic data and we detect the presence of equatorial plasma bubbles (EPB) from L-band total electron content (TEC) data in order to understand their movement. Our results provide evidence of independent EPBs appearance freshly generated and inherited from a migrating plasma structure. The EPB (or EPBs) occurring in the south of India is/are freshly generated just above the magnetic equator, and is/are likely triggered by the sudden increase of EEJ just before the local sunset, acting as a pre-reversal enhancement. The EPB appearing in the North-East Indian region is associated with a migrating structure, resulting in a northward movement with a velocity of about 650 m/s, possibly testifying the passage of a large-scale traveling ionospheric disturbance. The occurrence of severe post-sunset scintillations in the northeastern sector suggests a possible cascade process forming small-scale irregularities from the migrating EPB.

    Notes: In progressing from a granitoid mylonite to an ultramylonite in the Brevard shear zone in North Carolina, Ca and LOI (H2O) increase, Si, Mg, K, Na, Ba, Sr, Ta, Cs and Th decrease, while changes in Al, Ti, Fe, P, Sc, Rb, REE, Hf, Cr and U are relatively small. A volume loss of 44% is calculated for the Brevard ultramylonite relative to an Al–Ti–Fe isocon. The increase in Ca and LOI is related to a large increase in retrograde epidote and muscovite in the ultramylonite, the decreases in K, Na, Si, Ba and Sr reflect the destruction of feldspars, and the decrease in Mg is related to the destruction of biotite during mylonitization. In an amphibolite facies fault zone separating grey and pink granitic gneisses in the Hope Valley shear zone in New England, compositional similarity suggests the ultramylonite is composed chiefly of the pink gneisses. Utilizing an Al–Ti–Fe isocon for the pink gneisses, Sc, Cr, Hf, Ta, U, Th and M-HREE are relatively unchanged, Si, LOI, K, Mg, Rb, Cs and Ba are enriched, and Ca, Na, P, Sr and LREE are lost during deformation. In contrast to the Brevard mylonite, the Hope Valley mylonite appears to have increased in volume by about 70%, chiefly in response to an introduction of quartz.Chondrite-normalized REE patterns of granitoids from both shear zones are LREE-enriched and have prominent negative Eu anomalies. Although REE increase in abundance in the Brevard ultramylonites (reflecting the volume loss), the shape of the REE pattern remains unchanged. In contrast, REE and especially LREE decrease in abundance with increasing deformation of the Hope Valley gneisses. Mass balance calculations indicate that ≥95% of the REE in the Brevard rocks reside in titanite. In contrast, in the Hope Valley rocks only 15–40% of the REE can be accounted for collectively by titanite, apatite and zircon. Possible sites for the remaining REE are allanite, fluorite or grain boundaries. Loss of LREE from the pink gneisses during deformation may have resulted from decreases in allanite and perhaps apatite or by leaching ofy REE from grain boundaries by fluids moving through the shear zone.Among the element ratios most resistant to change during mylonitization in the Brevard shear zone are La/Yb, Eu/Eu*, Sm/Nd, La/Sc, Th/Sc, Th/Yb, Cr/Th, Th/U and Hf/Ta, whereas the most stable ratios in the Hope Valley shear zone are K/Rb, Rb/Cs, Th/U, Eu/Eu*, Th/Sc, Th/Yb, Sm/Nd, Th/Ta, Hf/Ta and Hf/Yb. However, until more trace element data are available from other shear zones, these ratios should not be used alone to identify protoliths of deformed rocks.

    Notes: Experiments were conducted to analyse the effect of 3-year-old grass plots, under a cut-and-carry system, on the yields of maize and groundnut crops, and at the same time to compare the relative importance of the water-stable aggregates and the nitrogen status of the soil. The N reserves, organic carbon and water-stable aggregate contents of soils were higher under grass plots than in the ploughed-up-fallow plots. Maize yields showed a close correlation with total soil N, mineralized N after incubation for 20 days, and water-stable aggregate contents; groundnut yields showed close correlation only with water-stable aggregates. The effects of the variations in soil N and in the water-stable aggregate content of the soil on the yields of maize and groundnuts were examined by multiple regression analysis of data from a large number of plots.

    Notes: A field analysis is developed for the helical slow-wave structure of a traveling-wave tube in the anisotropic sheath helix model considering the effects of the azimuthal harmonics generated due to periodical positioning of the support bars around the helix. A practical relevance is added to the problem by way of considering the effect of an overall metal enclosure; the losses of the structure are, however, ignored. The analytical result justifies the usual heuristic approach of treating the support bars as a continuous dielectric of a suitably interpreted permittivity.

    Notes: High-quality chemical vapor deposited TiCN films were produced in a single wafer reactor using a metallorganic (TDMAT) precursor. The films have excellent step coverage over high aspect-ratio contacts as well as very low particle content. These properties are obtained because the films are deposited under surface-reaction controlled conditions. The films show also excellent barrier properties against Al and WF6 attack. These properties make this material a superb contact barrier material for ultra-large-scale integrated devices. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: High quality chemical vapor deposited (CVD) WSix (2.2〈x〈2.6) films were deposited on 200 mm Si wafers using SiH2Cl2/WF6 chemistry. Earlier reported problems regarding silicide nucleation at the substrate interface were solved resulting in a highly uniform composition (vertically and laterally) regardless of the substrate type (SiO2 or polycrystalline Si). As-deposited resistivities of ∼750 μΩ cm were obtained for WSix (x=2.4–2.5) films grown at 550–600 °C. The films were completely crystalline, consisting predominantly of the hexagonal WSi2 phase. The as-deposited stress in the films was ∼1.3×1010 dyne/cm2 and after 900 °C anneal has reduced to ∼8×109 dyne/cm2. The films contained relatively low levels of impurities: F∼6×1016–2×1017 atoms/cm3, and Cl∼5×1017–5×1018 atoms/cm3.
