    Notes: Abstract We have developed in vitro and ex vivo assay systems for screening food components and natural substances that suppress the proliferation and/or invasion of a rat ascites hepatoma cell line of AH109A and have used them to study the effect of green tea extract. AH109A cells were found to penetrate underneath the monolayer of primary cultured mesothelial cells isolated from Donryu rat mesentery in the presence of 10% newborn bovine serum. Green tea extract inhibited this AH109A penetration in a dose dependent manner and also inhibited AH109A proliferation in vitro dose-dependently. Green tea tannin, the major polyphenolic substances in green tea extract, also inhibited the proliferation and invasion of AH109A in vitro in a dose dependent manner. When rat serum obtained 0.5 h after oral intubation of green tea extract was added to the culture media instead of newborn bovine serum at a concentration of 10%, the invasion of AH109A was significantly inhibited as compared to control rat serum (before green tea extract intubation); the inhibitory effect lasted for 1 h and disappeared 3 h after oral intubation of green tea extract, but those rat sera showed no inhibition of AH109A proliferation. These results suggest that green tea extract has an inhibitory effect on the invasion of AH109A both in vitro and ex vivo, but on the proliferation of AH109A only in vitro, and that these assay systems are effective for the screening of food components which inhibit tumor cell proliferation and invasion.

The Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2 (OCO-2) launched in July 2014, collects radiance spectra using an imaging grating spectrometer. Both sensors observe sunlight reflected from Earth’s surface and retrieve atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations, but use different spectrometer technologies, observing geometries, and ground track repeat cycles. To demonstrate the effectiveness of satellite remote sensing for CO2 monitoring, the GOSAT and OCO-2 teams have worked together pre- and post-launch to cross-calibrate the instruments and cross-validate their retrieval algorithms and products. In this work, we first compare observed radiance spectra within three narrow bands centered at 0.76, 1.60 and 2.06 µm, at temporally coincident and spatially collocated points from September 2014 to March 2017. We reconciled the differences in observation footprints size, viewing geometry and associated differences in surface bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF). We conclude that the spectral radiances measured by the two instruments agree within 5% for all bands. Second, we estimated mean bias and standard deviation of column-averaged CO2 dry air mole fraction (XCO2) retrieved from GOSAT and OCO-2 from September 2014 to May 2016. GOSAT retrievals used Build 7.3 (V7.3) of the Atmospheric CO2 Observations from Space (ACOS) algorithm while OCO-2 retrievals used Version 7 of the OCO-2 retrieval algorithm. The mean biases and standard deviations are −0.57 ± 3.33 ppm over land with high gain, −0.17 ± 1.48 ppm over ocean with high gain and −0.19 ± 2.79 ppm over land with medium gain. Finally, our study is complemented with an analysis of error sources: retrieved surface pressure (Psurf), aerosol optical depth (AOD), BRDF and surface albedo inhomogeneity. We found no change in XCO2 bias or standard deviation with time, demonstrating that both instruments are well calibrated.

    Description: Measurements of air and solid-particle velocities were made in a vertical pipe two-phase flow by the use of a laser-Doppler velocimeter (LDV). Five kinds of plastic particles, diameters of which ranged from about 3 mm to 200 μm, were transported in a vertical pipe of 30 mm inner diameter. It was found that, the smaller the particle size, the flatter was the mean air velocity distribution for the same mass flow ratio of solids to air. Large particles increased air turbulence throughout the pipe section, while small particles reduced it. Both effects of promotion and suppression of turbulence were observed at the same time in the presence of particles of medium size, that is, the turbulence was increased around the pipe centre and reduced near the wall. The frequency spectrum of air turbulence normalized by the turbulence intensity was not changed by the large particles. In the presence of the small particles, the higher-frequency parts of the spectrum increased. © 1984, Archives Européenes de Sociology. All rights reserved.
