    Description: The Antarctic Roadmap Challenges (ARC) project identified critical requirements to deliver high priority Antarctic research in the 21st century. The ARC project addressed the challenges of enabling technologies, facilitating access, providing logistics and infrastructure, and capitalizing on international co-operation. Technological requirements include: i) innovative automated in situ observing systems, sensors and interoperable platforms (including power demands), ii) realistic and holistic numerical models, iii) enhanced remote sensing and sensors, iv) expanded sample collection and retrieval technologies, and v) greater cyber-infrastructure to process ‘big data’ collection, transmission and analyses while promoting data accessibility. These technologies must be widely available, performance and reliability must be improved and technologies used elsewhere must be applied to the Antarctic. Considerable Antarctic research is field-based, making access to vital geographical targets essential. Future research will require continent- and ocean-wide environmentally responsible access to coastal and interior Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Year-round access is indispensable. The cost of future Antarctic science is great but there are opportunities for all to participate commensurate with national resources, expertise and interests. The scope of future Antarctic research will necessitate enhanced and inventive interdisciplinary and international collaborations. The full promise of Antarctic science will only be realized if nations act together.

    Description: Novel species of fungi described in the present study include the following from Australia: Vermiculariopsiella eucalypti, Mulderomyces natalis (incl. Mulderomyces gen. nov.), Fusicladium paraamoenum, Neotrimmatostroma paraexcentricum, and Pseudophloeospora eucalyptorum on leaves of Eucalyptus spp., Anungitea grevilleae (on leaves of Grevillea sp.), Pyrenochaeta acaciae (on leaves of Acacia sp.), and Brunneocarpos banksiae (incl. Brunneocarpos gen. nov.) on cones of Banksia attenuata. Novel foliicolous taxa from South Africa include Neosulcatispora strelitziae (on Strelitzia nicolai), Colletotrichum ledebouriae (on Ledebouria floridunda), Cylindrosympodioides brabejum (incl. Cylindrosympodioides gen. nov.) on Brabejum stellatifolium, Sclerostagonospora ericae (on Erica sp.), Setophoma cyperi (on Cyperus sphaerocephala), and Phaeosphaeria breonadiae (on Breonadia microcephala). Novelties from Thailand include Cyphellophora gamsii (on leaf litter), Pisolithus aureosericeus and Corynascus citrinus (on soil). Two species are newly described from Citrus in Italy, namely Dendryphiella paravinosa on Citrus sinensis, and Ramularia citricola on Citrus floridana. Morphological and culture characteristics along with ITS nrDNA barcodes are provided for all taxa.

    Description: Methane gas hydrates, crystalline inclusion compounds formed from methane and water, are found in marine continental margin and permafrost sediments worldwide. This article reviews the current understanding of phenomena involved in gas hydrate formation and the physical properties of hydrate-bearing sediments. Formation phenomena include pore-scale habit, solubility, spatial variability, and host sediment aggregate properties. Physical properties include thermal properties, permeability, electrical conductivity and permittivity, small-strain elastic P and S wave velocities, shear strength, and volume changes resulting from hydrate dissociation. The magnitudes and interdependencies of these properties are critically important for predicting and quantifying macroscale responses of hydrate-bearing sediments to changes in mechanical, thermal, or chemical boundary conditions. These predictions are vital for mitigating borehole, local, and regional slope stability hazards; optimizing recovery techniques for extracting methane from hydrate-bearing sediments or sequestering carbon dioxide in gas hydrate; and evaluating the role of gas hydrate in the global carbon cycle.

    Description: The obligate biotrophic lineages of the white blister rusts (Albuginales, Oomycota) are of ancient origin compared to the rather recently evolved downy mildews, and sophisticated mechanisms of biotrophy and a high degree of adaptation diversity are to be expected in these organisms. Speciation in the biotrophic Oomycetes is usually thought to be the consequence of host adaptation or geographic isolation. Here we report the presence of two distinct species of Albugo on the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, Albugo candida and Albugo laibachii, the latter being formally described in this manuscript. Both species may occupy the same host within the same environment, but are nevertheless phylogenetically distinct, as inferred from analyses of both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences. Different ways of adapting to their host physiology might constitute an important factor of their different niches. Evidence for this can be gained from the completely different host range of the two pathogens.\nWhile Albugo candida is a generalist species, consisting of several physiological varieties, which is able to parasitize a great variety of Brassicaceae, Albugo laibachii has not been found on any host other than Arabidopsis thaliana.\nTherefore, Albugo laibachii belongs to a group of highly specialised species, like the other known specialist species in Albugo s.s., Albugo koreana, Albugo lepidii and Albugo voglmayrii. The comparative investigation of the effector genes and host targets in the generalist and the specialist species may constitute a model system for elucidating the fundamental processes involved in plant pathogen co-adaptation and speciation.

    Description: Seven species of Marasmius sect. Globulares with smooth pileipellis cells (sect. Globulares s. Singer) have been collected in the Republic of Korea (South Korea) to date, viz. M. aurantioferrugineus, M. brunneospermus, M. maximus, M. nivicola, M. purpureostriatus, M. wynneae and M. fusicystidiosus. Descriptions of their macro- and microscopic features with a discussion of similar taxa are given. Their taxonomic position was confirmed using\nDNA\ndata. Marasmius fusicystidiosus is described as a new species. A key to aid in their identification is also provided.

    Description: In-situ near-bottom current measurements, which were collected at a depth of ~5,000 m in the northeastern Pacific (10.5°N, 131.3°W) during 2004–2013, revealed a spectral peak at 25–40 days and showed increased amplitude during La Niña periods. Tropical instability waves (TIWs), which are located at the boundary between the Pacific warm pool and the cold tongue in the equatorial eastern Pacific, exhibit temporal variations similar to those observed by the near-bottom current sensor. Coherence map at 25–40-day periods between gridded satellite-measured sea surface height (SSH) which includes the variation of TIWs, and the near-bottom velocity components exhibits significant values in a wide region of eastern Pacific except along the latitude 10°N, where the coherence phase changes abruptly. It is known that the discontinuity results from a coherent superposition of TIWs with barotropic Rossby waves induced by TIW (BTRW〈sub〉TIW〈/sub〉). We also used 25–40-day bandpass filtered barotropic velocity results from data-assimilated ocean model called GLORYS12V1, which agree well with the filtered in-situ near-bottom currents. The filtered simulated barotropic velocity results showed that they reasonably satisfied the theoretical dispersion relation of BTRW〈sub〉TIW〈/sub〉 and exhibited the inter-annual variations which are related to El Niño-southern oscillation (ENSO). We reconfirmed BTRW〈sub〉TIW〈/sub〉 propagating northward above 10°N in the northeastern Pacific by in-situ observations firstly with a maximum velocity of approximately 3 cm/s.

    Description: The ocean circulation variabilities are represented in numerical experiments with steady external forcings without interannual variability. These variabilities are known as “Ocean Intrinsic Variability”. The intrinsic variability is mainly concentrated on the mid-latitude western boundary currents such as the Kuroshio, Gulf Stream, and Agulhas Current, and their extensions.The East/Japan Sea (hereafter the East Sea) also has various ocean current patterns and eddies, and the upper layer circulation is driven by interactions with various external forcings. The East Sea shows intrinsic variability in numerical experiments. However, previous studies are insufficient on the physical mechanism of intrinsic variability in the East Sea.In this study, the physical mechanisms of intrinsic variability are analyzed using numerical experiments. The experiments are conducted with constant forcings and seasonal variation in the external forcings. The intrinsic variabilities in the East Sea mainly appear in the meandering or eddy-rich activity regions. In the southern part, the sea surface height anomalies propagate westward to the western boundary due to the baroclinic Rossby waves. The Rossby waves can change the strength of the eastward jet or the north-south movement of the jet axis.
