Notes: Third-order nonlinear optical properties of Au/SiO2 composite thin films have been investigated by means of a degenerate four-wave mixing at room temperature. In the optical-absorption spectra the absorption peak due to the surface plasmon resonance of Au particles is observed at the wavelength around 530 nm. With increasing the mean diameter of Au particles, the absorption at the peak is increased and the full width at half-maximum of the absorption band is decreased from 130 to 80 nm. The third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ(3) exhibits a peak at the wavelength of the absorption peak and the maximum value of χ(3) is obtained to be 2.0×10−7 esu. The size-dependent enhancement of the χ(3) in Au particles with the mean diameter of 3.0–33.7 nm has been also investigated. The value of χ(3)/α (α: absorption coefficient) for the films is increased upon an increase of mean diameter of Au particles. This is explained by the size dependences of the local-field factor and the imaginary part of dielectric constant of the metal particles. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Helium I line intensity ratios obtained by a collisional radiative model, including new recommended excitation rate coefficients and the effects of hot electrons, enable us to measure electron density (ne) and temperature (Te) in high density plasma. Measured ne and Te using 492.2 nm (4 1D→2 1P)/471.3 nm (4 3S→2 3P), 504.8 nm (4 1S→2 1P)/471.3 nm, and 492.2 nm/504.8 nm line intensity ratios are in good agreement with the Langmuir probe results in the helium discharge plasma in the NAGDIS-I linear device (Nagoya University Divertor Simulator) for ne and Te regions of 1011–4×1012 cm−3 and 5–20 eV. Hot electrons in the plasma are important for the He I line emissions when Te is below the excitation energy ≈20 eV. A resonance scattering effect included in the calculation accounts for the experimental result of the enhanced 501.6 nm (3 1P→2 1S) line emission. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A chemical shift of about 5 eV was observed between ferrous and ferric ions in the XANES absorption spectra of FeO and Fe2O3 where the Fe ions coordinate in regular octahedra. Experimental f'e was estimated based on the cross-section data in the 108 eV region at the Fe K edge using the Cromer and Liberman's equation. The result shows that the maximum difference in f'e between Fe2+ and Fe3+ is about 2.5 at the longer wavelength side of the Fe2+K edge. The XANES spectrum of Fe3O4 (magnetite) lies between those of FeO and Fe2O3. Synchrotron x-ray-diffraction data of a magnetite crystal were measured on a vertical-type four-circle diffractometer and used for evaluation at seven wavelengths of 1.7415, 1.7420, 1.7425, 1.7431, 1.7452, 1.7499, and 1.7567 A(ring). The difference-Fourier technique promises the possibility of mapping valence differences for atoms of the same atomic species in a mixed-valence crystal. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new mechanism to balance the torque induced on goniometer arms was developed to prevent serious mechanical difficulties of goniometers. Since the amount of the torque induced by its own weight depends on the goniometer angle, a new angle-dependent torque is applied to the goniometer arms to balance the original torque. A system based on this mechanism consists of an angle sensor, a function calculator, and an actuator. The goniometer angle is detected by a displacement gauge, and subsequently converted to the appropriate value of the air pressure applied by an electropneumatic controller. A new torque is applied by the controller through a wire to the goniometer arm to balance the original torque. Nearly "torque-free'' operation of the goniometer became possible by this system, which was installed on the 2θ axis of the four-circle goniometer in the triple-axis/four-circle diffractometer, SIN-1, at PF-BL3A. The axis has been able to scan as fast as 2θ=100°/min under a maximum torque of 500 Nm without any mechanical difficulties, for more than two years. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Several new goniometers were installed on the triple-axis/four-circle diffractometer, SIN-1 at PF-BL3A to improve data acquisition ability and beam collimation. The most prominent improvement is development and installation of a new two-circle/one-linear goniometer, which was designed to mount various x-ray detectors, such as an imaging plate or a multielement solid-state detector to acquire diffraction and/or fluorescence data over a wide range of scattering angles. The new goniometer and the original four-circle goniometer have a common rotation center (i.e., the four-circle goniometer center). The new goniometer can be operated independently of the four-circle goniometer for a wide range of scattering angles. The new two-circle/one-linear goniometer consists of a tandem combination of a translation stage, η, and two-circle goniometers, κ and ξ, where these axes η, κ, and ξ correspond to polar coordinates (ρ, θ, cursive-phi), respectively. Other improvements such as development of a pair of total reflection mirrors for the collimator axis are also reported. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Circularly polarized light was generated in the millimeter wavelength region from superposition of forward transition radiation (TR) and backward TR emitted from two metallic screens placed along a trajectory of a short-bunch beam of electrons of 42 MeV. The degree of the circular polarization was analyzed to be 97% of the polarized radiation at λ=2.25 mm, using a Soleil's compensator and a wire-grid polarizer. The geometry of the metallic screens was discussed from the point of the phase difference between the forward TR and the backward TR. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The surface of a flat-plate quartz mirror has been investigated by bending it into a pseudoparaboloid with the mirror bender in BL-3A. The evaluation of the beam collimation and actual mirror curvature have been made by x-ray diffraction using the (+,−,−) arrangement of Si(111) crystals. The FWHM in (+,−,−) rocking curves of a whole beam was reduced from 42.7 to 14.1 arcsec with the collimating mirror. The distances deviating from the ideal paraboloid were found to be very small, i.e., less than 0.6 and 3.5 μm in ±200 and ±400 mm in the mirror length, respectively. The efficiency of the mirror was also estimated from the CeO2 diffraction patterns which were slightly but significantly improved in FWHM and peak intensity with the collimation. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Magnetoabsorption and magnetophotoluminescence spectra of type-II (GaAs)m/(AlAs)n superlattices with (m,n)=(3,5) and (5,6) have been measured in pulsed high magnetic fields up to about 40 T. Large dependence of the diamagnetic shift of the excitons on the field direction was observed in magneto-photoluminescence spectra, strongly suggesting XZ character of the conduction band minima for these values of m and n. Oscillatory structures related to the higher lying Γ-like conduction band are also resolved.

Notes: The magneto-optical Faraday effect of porous films comprised of cobalt-substituted barium ferrite (Co:BaM) fine particles fixed by a resin was investigated. The films were prepared by spin-on process of a magnetic ink involving Co:BaM particles on glass substrates. Porous films were formed when the particle concentration of the ink, f, was low, i.e., f〈0.3, and the coated ink was dried while applying a dc magnetic field normal to the substrate plane. The pit size became bigger when the coated ink was thicker, or the field was stronger. The Faraday effect of the films underwent a drastic change caused by the formation of a porous structure. The Faraday rotation spectrum exhibited dispersion-type behavior and its center wavelength was shifted toward longer wavelength with increasing pit dimension. Rotation angle enhancement was observed, which is considered to be caused by the mode modulation of light due to the existence of the pits.
