Notes: Gold powder was mixed with YBa2Cu3O7−x superconductors for the purpose of increasing the critical current density (Jc). The critical transition temperature at zero resistance (Tzeroc) gradually decreased by the Au addition. However, the depression of Tzeroc was as low as 2 K for the YBa2Cu3O7−x -Au composite with Au mixing up to 40 wt.%. A maximum Jc of 307 A/cm2 was obtained for the Au 5-wt. % mixed composite. The Jc was about four times as high as that for YBa2Cu3O7−x without Au mixing. In addition to the Jc enhancement, the weak-link problem was appreciably improved by the Au addition.

Notes: For bis(pyridine)(porphinato) iron [FeP(py)2], a correlation between the iron electronic state and the equilibrium Fe–Npy distance was investigated. Potential energy curves as a function of the Fe–Npy distance were calculated for low-spin, intermediate-spin, and high-spin states of the ferric and ferrous ions by the ab initio SCF MO method. The equilibrium Fe–Npy distances were obtained from the potential curves. The values obtained for the ferric low-spin and high-spin states were in good agreement with the experimental values for Fe(III)(OEP)(3-Clpy)2 within the differences, ±0.05 A(ring). The following significant features were found. The equilibrium distance is elongated by the occupation of the 3dz2 orbital and is shortened by the oxidation of the iron atom. The distance and the force constant for the symmetrical py–Fe–py stretching are strongly correlated with the overlap population between the 3dz2 orbital and pyridine–nitrogen orbitals.

Notes: The potential energy curves as a function of the out-of-plane displacement of the iron atom in Fe-porphine were calculated for various spin states and oxidation states of the iron atom by the ab initio SCF MO method. It was found that porphine attracts the iron atom to the center of the porphine plane for all the electronic states. The force constant for the out-of-plane motion of the iron atom is decreased by the occupation of the dx2−y2 orbital and increased by oxidation of the iron atom. It was also found that the force constant is strongly correlated with the overlap population between the dx2−y2 orbital and the pyrrole–nitrogen orbitals.

Notes: Summary A rare female case of Duchenne muscular dystrophy with an X/4 translocation was found. Detailed cytogenetic analyses by R-banding and high-resolution G-banding techniques revcaled that the exchange point involved in the translcoation was at the p21.1 band on the X chromosome.

Notes: Abstract A structural analysis of talc ground under dry atmospheric conditions for different grinding times has been made by X-ray diffraction. The SiO4 tetrahedra are found to remain unchanged in the ground talc samples by analysing the radial distribution function. On the other hand, with an increase of the grinding time a change in oxygen coordination number around magnesium has been quantitatively confirmed. This variation is attributed to the change of a hydroxyl induced by the prolonged grinding.

Notes: Abstract A novel method has been developed for measuring direct compressive properties such as strength and elasticity of a series of mesophase-pitch-based and PAN-based carbon fibres about 10 μm in diameter by uniaxial and transverse compression tests using a micromechanical tester. The fibres were shaped into cylindrical specimens, with their size ratio of length to diameter kept at about 2 to 3, by separating them from a “thin film” made by polishing the cut faces of a strand of carbon fibres with epoxy resin as a matrix. Individual cylindrical specimens were stood up or laid down on a glass plate without any fixer for the measurements of axial and transverse compression properties of fibres, respectively. The fibres exhibited non-linear elasticity, with the compressive modulus decreasing with compressive deformation. The direct axial compressive strengths of pitch-based carbon fibres were found to be marginally lower than the indirect ones, whereas there was no significant difference between the two strength values for PAN-based fibres. The pitch-based fibres exhibited smaller average values of axial compressive strength than the PAN-based fibres. The transverse compressive strength, which decreases with an increase in elasticity of carbon fibres, exhibited a considerably lower average value than that of the axial compressive strength. Further, the axial compressive strength was found to be smaller than the direct tensile strength for the fibres.

Description: In the context of future climate change, understanding the nature and behaviour of ice sheets during warm intervals in Earth history is of fundamental importance. The late Pliocene warm period (also known as the PRISM interval: 3.264 to 3.025 million years before present) can serve as a potential analogue for projected future climates. Although Pliocene ice locations and extents are still poorly constrained, a significant contribution to sea-level rise should be expected from both the Greenland ice sheet and the West and East Antarctic ice sheets based on palaeo sea-level reconstructions. Here, we present results from simulations of the Antarctic ice sheet by means of an international Pliocene Ice Sheet Modeling Intercomparison Project (PLISMIP-ANT). For the experiments, ice-sheet models including the shallow ice and shelf approximations have been used to simulate the complete Antarctic domain (including grounded and floating ice). We compare the performance of six existing numerical ice-sheet models in simulating modern control and Pliocene ice sheets by a suite of five sensitivity experiments. We include an overview of the different ice-sheet models used and how specific model configurations influence the resulting Pliocene Antarctic ice sheet. The six ice-sheet models simulate a comparable present-day ice sheet, considering the models are set up with their own parameter settings. For the Pliocene, the results demonstrate the difficulty of all six models used here to simulate a significant retreat or re-advance of the East Antarctic ice grounding line, which is thought to have happened during the Pliocene for the Wilkes and Aurora basins. The specific sea-level contribution of the Antarctic ice sheet at this point cannot be conclusively determined, whereas improved grounding line physics could be essential for a correct representation of the migration of the grounding-line of the Antarctic ice sheet during the Pliocene.
