    Notes: In an attempt to understand the liquid–liquid phase separation in the B2O3–MgO, B2O3–CaO, B2O3–SrO, and B2O3–BaO systems, the liquid miscibility gaps were calculated using the optimized interaction parameters of liquid phases. The Gibbs energies of liquid phases were derived in the form of a subregular solution from an optimization procedure based on phase diagram data. In addition, metastable liquidus boundaries and spinodal curves were also assessed by using the Gibbs energies of liquid phases. The present results were compared and discussed with other experimental and assessed data available in the literature.

    Notes: Vertically aligned carbon nitride nanotubes with a uniform diameter of about 250 nm have been synthesized on a porous alumina membrane template (50–80 μm thick) in a microwave excited plasma of C2H2 and N2 using an electron cyclotron resonance chemical vapor deposition system. A negative dc bias voltage was applied to the substrate holder of graphite to promote the flow of ionic fluxes through the nanochannels of the alumina template. This allowed the physical, and subsequent chemical, absorption of species on the walls of the nanochannels that resulted in the formation of the carbon nitride nanotubes. The hollow structure and vertically aligned properties of the nanotubes have been clearly verified by field-emission scanning electron microscope images. The absorption band between 1250 and 1750 cm−1 in the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectrum proves that nitrogen atoms have been incorporated into an amorphous network of carbon. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We propose and implement a promising fabrication technology for geometrically well-defined single-electron transistors based on a silicon-on-insulator quantum wire and side-wall depletion gates. The 30-nm-wide silicon quantum wire is defined by a combination of conventional photolithography and process technology, called a side-wall patterning method, and depletion gates for two tunnel junctions are formed by the doped polycrystalline silicon sidewall. The good uniformity of the wire suppresses unexpected potential barriers. The fabricated device shows clear single-electron tunneling phenomena by an electrostatically defined single island at liquid nitrogen temperature and insensitivity of the Coulomb oscillation period to gate bias conditions. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The objective of this study is to provide insights into how the predictive power for computer-recorded system usage can be improved. Based on 386 responses from actual users of an information system, we examine the predictive power for system usage according to the scales of the predictors used, namely, intention and past use. First, we show that the predictive power of intention can be significantly improved with the choice of an appropriate measure. However, even the desirable intention measure failed to explain two-thirds of the variance in system usage. Second, the results show that past use as measured by computer-recorded log data can significantly enhance our ability to predict system usage. Finally, when both intention and past use are controlled for, the explained variance in system usage is shown to vary widely from 20% to 73%, depending on the predictors' scales. Overall, our findings suggest that an accurate prediction of system usage requires a more rigorous approach than that often applied in information systems research.

    Notes: Activities of the sucrose-cleaving enzymes, acid and neutral invertase and sucrose synthase, were measured in pods and seeds of developing snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) fruits, and compared with 14C-import, elongation and dry weight accumulation. During the first 10 d post-anthesis, pods elongated rapidly with pod dry weight increase lagging behind by several days. The temporal patterns of acid invertase activity and import coincided closely during the first part of pod development, consonant with a central role for this enzyme in converting imported sucrose during pod elongation and early dry weight accumulation. Later, sucrose synthase became the predominant enzyme of dry weight accumulation and was possibly associated with the development of phloem in pod walls. Sucrose synthase activity in seeds showed two peaks, corresponding to two phases of rapid import and dry weight accumulation; hence, sucrose synthase was associated with seed sink growth. Acid invertase activities in seeds were low and did not show a noticeable relationship with import or growth. All neutral invertase activities, during pod and seed development, were too low for it to have a dominant role in sucrose cleavage. Changes in activities of certain sucrose-cleaving enzymes appear to be correlated with certain sink functions, including import, storage of reserves, and biosynthetic activities. The data supports the association of specific sucrose-cleaving enzymes with the specific processes that occur in the developing pods and seeds of snap bean fruits; for example, acid invertase with pod elongation and sucrose synthase with fruit dry matter accumulation.

    Notes: The molecular mechanism of plant response to UV-B radiation was studied using the nopaline synthase (nos) promoter, which has been shown to be inducible by methyl jasmonate (MJ) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). In the leaves of transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) plants that carried a fusion between the nos promoter and the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (cat) gene, 2 h of UV-B treatment resulted in a transient increase in the level of cat mRNA, a maximum being reached at 6 h after the UV-B treatment. It was also found that MJ and UV-B enhance nos promoter expression via separate pathways. Diethyldithiocarbamic acid, a potent inhibitor of jasmonate production, had little effect on UV-B stimulation of the nos promoter. In contrast, antioxidants, such as dimethylthiourea, reduced glutathione, cysteine, N-acetylcysteine and DTT, blocked UV-B induction of the nos promoter, but did not affect MJ induction of the nos promoter. These results suggest that UV-B induction of the nos promoter is mediated via a pathway that requires reactive oxygen species and is distinct from the jasmonate or MJ mediating pathway.

    Notes: Antimiciobials were evaluated in thioglycollate broth at pH 6.5 for the ability to inhibit growth and toxin production by C. botulinum 12885A and ATCC 7949 (Type B). Methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl parabens (0.1%) and sorbic acid (0.2%) were effective in inhibiting growth of C. botulinum 12885A and ATCC 7949 in broth. Ethyl, propyl, and butyl parabens (0.1%) and sorbic acid (0.2%) inhibited toxin production by both strains in culture medium. Ethyl, propyl, butyl parabens (0.1%) and sorbic acid (0.2%) were individually added to a comminuted pork slurry having salt and sugar, with or without 40 ppm sodium nitrite. Cans were inoculated with a mixture of C. botulinum 12885A and ATCC 7949 spores. The canned product was abused by holding at 27°C and was observed over a 3-month period for swollen cans. Swollen cans were examined for botulinal toxin by the mouse bioassay. Propyl and butyl paraben did not inhibit or delay toxin production. Ethyl paraben with or without nitrite delayed toxin production for 4 wk. Sorbic acid inhibited toxin for 3 wk; when 40 ppm nitrite was added to the sorbic acid treatment, toxin production was delayed for 4 wk.

    Notes: Contractility and ATPase activity of myofibrils from normal and PSE porcine muscles were studied Studies were also made on the extractability of proteins from myofibrils isolated from normal and PSE muscles. Normal muscles contracted instantaneously after the addition of Mg2+-ATP, while PSE muscles contracted in part or did not contract. ATPase activity of myofibrils isolated from muscle having higher pH value was higher than that of myofibrils isolated from muscle having lower pH value. When using either Hasselbach-Schneider or KI solutions to extract myofibrillar proteins, the proportion of protein extracted was significantly higher for normal muscles when compared to those from PSE muscles.
