    Description: Behaviors are challenging to reconstruct for extinct species, particularly the nature and origins of acoustic communication. Here we unravel the song of Archaboilus musicus Gu, Engel and Ren sp. nov., a 165 million year old stridulating katydid. From the exceptionally preserved morphology of its stridulatory apparatus in the forewings and phylogenetic comparison with extant species, we reveal that A. musicus radiated pure-tone (musical) songs using a resonant mechanism tuned at a frequency of 6.4 kHz. Contrary to previous scenarios, musical songs were an early innovation, preceding the broad-bandwidth songs of extant katydids. Providing an accurate insight into paleoacoustic ecology, the low-frequency musical song of A. musicus was well-adapted to communication in the lightly cluttered environment of the mid-Jurassic forest produced by coniferous trees and giant ferns, suggesting that reptilian, amphibian, and mammalian insectivores could have also heard A. musicus' song.

    Description: One of the fundamental properties of biological membranes is the asymmetric distribution of membrane lipids. In Gram-negative bacteria, the outer leaflet of the outer membrane is composed predominantly of lipopolysaccharides (LPS). The export of LPS requires seven essential lipopolysaccharide transport (Lpt) proteins to move LPS from the inner membrane, through the periplasm to the surface. Of the seven Lpt proteins, the LptD-LptE complex is responsible for inserting LPS into the external leaflet of the outer membrane. Here we report the crystal structure of the approximately 110-kilodalton membrane protein complex LptD-LptE from Shigella flexneri at 2.4 A resolution. The structure reveals an unprecedented two-protein plug-and-barrel architecture with LptE embedded into a 26-stranded beta-barrel formed by LptD. Importantly, the secondary structures of the first two beta-strands are distorted by two proline residues, weakening their interactions with neighbouring beta-strands and creating a potential portal on the barrel wall that could allow lateral diffusion of LPS into the outer membrane.     Description: 〈span〉〈div〉SUMMARY〈/div〉In actual monopole acoustic logging-while-drilling (LWD), the acquisition of formation velocities is rather difficult because of a strong collar wave interference. In this study, a method is proposed to enhance the amplitudes of formation gliding waves in an LWD borehole, based on the directional radiation technology of linear phased array (LPA) acoustic transmitters. Waveforms in the LWD borehole generated by a monopole acoustic transmitter and LPA acoustic transmitters are numerically simulated using the finite-difference method. The influence of the LPA parameters on the various waves in the LWD borehole is also analysed. The simulation results show that the guided waves in the LWD borehole generated by the LPA acoustic transmitter have the same type but different relative amplitudes compared to those generated by the monopole transmitter. The angular width and deflection angle of the main radiated acoustic beam in the borehole can be controlled by adjusting the LPA parameters. As the delay time between the excitation signals applied to adjacent elements is increased, the deflection angle of the main radiated acoustic beam in the borehole satisfies the generation conditions for the gliding compressional (〈span〉P〈/span〉) and shear (〈span〉S〈/span〉) waves, successively. When the delay time is set such that the deflection angle is equal to the first (or second) critical angle of the formation, the amplitude of the gliding 〈span〉P〈/span〉 (or 〈span〉S〈/span〉) wave is greatly enhanced. Moreover, the amplitude of the gliding 〈span〉P〈/span〉 (or 〈span〉S〈/span〉) wave increases linearly as the element number increases under such conditions. Therefore, compared to the monopole acoustic transmitter, the LPA acoustic transmitter can be utilized to effectively improve the reliability of the acoustic LWD tool in measuring formation velocities. This study establishes a theoretical foundation for the next-generation acoustic LWD tool development.〈/span〉

    Description: Two novel core–shell structure ternary terbium composites SiO 2(600) @Tb(MABA-Si)·L(L:dipy/phen) nanometre luminescence materials were prepared by ternary terbium complexes Tb(MABA-Si)·L 2 ·(ClO 4 ) 3 ·2H 2 O shell grafted onto the surface of SiO 2 microspheres. And corresponding ternary terbium complexes were synthesized using (CONH(CH 2 ) 3 Si(OCH 2 CH 3 ) 3 ) 2 (denoted as MABA-Si) as first ligand and L as second ligand coordinated with terbium perchlorate. The as-synthesized products were characterized by means of IR spectra, 1 HNMR, element analysis, molar conductivity, SEM and TEM. It was found that the first ligand MABA-Si of terbium ternary complex hydrolysed to generate the Si–OH and the Si–OH condensate with the Si–OH on the surface of SiO 2 microspheres; then ligand MABA-Si grafted onto the surface of SiO 2 microspheres. The diameter of SiO 2 core of SiO 2(600) @Tb(MABA-Si)·L was approximately 600 nm. Interestingly, the luminescence properties demonstrate that the two core–shell structure ternary terbium composites SiO 2(600) Tb(MABA-Si)·L(dipy/phen) exhibit strong emission intensities, which are 2.49 and 3.35 times higher than that of the corresponding complexes Tb(MABA-Si)·L 2 ·(ClO 4 ) 3 ·2H 2 O, respectively. Luminescence decay curves show that core–shell structure ternary terbium composites have longer lifetime. Excellent luminescence properties enable the core–shell materials to have potential applications in medicine, industry, luminescent fibres and various biomaterials fields.

    Notes: Using the Monte Carlo method, we have calculated, for 50 keV electrons incident on a gold target, the dependence of the effective Sherman asymmetry function and scattered intensity on the target thickness and inelastic energy loss window for scattering angles from 90° to 180°. Our results show that, when the gold target is thicker than 700 Å or the inelastic energy loss window is larger than 1200 eV, the scattered intensity is maximum at a scattering angle of about 120°, and the effective Sherman function is almost constant over a wide range of scattering angles. Thus, for Mott scattering spin polarimeters, the electron detectors should be positioned at ±120°, and the larger the collection angle for scattered electrons, the higher the efficiency of the Mott polarimeter. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

A novel design of the retarding field electron optics with 0.59 sr collection solid angle for scattered electrons was adopted based on Monte Carlo calculations for the spin-dependent electron scattering process and electron beam ray-tracing calculations. We have combined the new spin polarimeter with an angle-resolved photoelectron spectrometer and measured the spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectra and studied the spin-dependent electronic structure of Ni(110) along the Γ¯S¯ line of its surface Brilluoin zone. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Based on Monte Carlo calculations for the spin-dependent electron-scattering process and electron ray-tracing calculations, a novel design of the retarding-field electron optics with 0.59 sr collection solid angle for scattered electrons has been accomplished. Utilizing this spectrometer, the spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectra have been measured and the spin-dependent electronic structure of Ni(110), Ni(110)-p(2 × 1)O and Ni(110)-c(2 × 2)S along the {\overline {\Gamma S}} line of the Ni(110) surface Brillouin zone have been studied.
