    Who Prepares for Terrorism? (2012)

    Description: The National Survey of Disaster Experiences and Preparedness (NSDEP) examined whether households in the United States have engaged in proactive preparedness and avoidance activities since September 11, 2001, and whether the activities reported were done because of terrorism, natural disasters, other reasons, or any combination of reasons. Reported activities were examined by geographic area of exposure to or threat of 9/11, gender, race/ethnic identification, and income. The sample was drawn using random-digit-dialing (RDD) supplemented with surname lists. Data were collected between April 13, 2007, and February 13, 2008. Few households did preparedness and avoidance activities exclusively because of concerns about terrorism. Rather decisions were motivated by a combination of reasons. Residents of New York City and Washington, DC, men, and high-income respondents reported more preparedness activities, whereas low-income respondents, African Americans, and Hispanics reported more avoidance activities.

    The draft genome of Ciona intestinalis: insights into chordate and vertebrate origins (2002)

    Description: The first chordates appear in the fossil record at the time of the Cambrian explosion, nearly 550 million years ago. The modern ascidian tadpole represents a plausible approximation to these ancestral chordates. To illuminate the origins of chordate and vertebrates, we generated a draft of the protein-coding portion of the genome of the most studied ascidian, Ciona intestinalis. The Ciona genome contains approximately 16,000 protein-coding genes, similar to the number in other invertebrates, but only half that found in vertebrates. Vertebrate gene families are typically found in simplified form in Ciona, suggesting that ascidians contain the basic ancestral complement of genes involved in cell signaling and development.     Adolescent stress-induced epigenetic control of dopaminergic neurons via glucocorticoids (2013)

    Description: Environmental stressors during childhood and adolescence influence postnatal brain maturation and human behavioral patterns in adulthood. Accordingly, excess stressors result in adult-onset neuropsychiatric disorders. We describe an underlying mechanism in which glucocorticoids link adolescent stressors to epigenetic controls in neurons. In a mouse model of this phenomenon, a mild isolation stress affects the mesocortical projection of dopaminergic neurons in which DNA hypermethylation of the tyrosine hydroxylase gene is elicited, but only when combined with a relevant genetic risk for neuropsychiatric disorders. These molecular changes are associated with several neurochemical and behavioral deficits that occur in this mouse model, all of which are blocked by a glucocorticoid receptor antagonist.     Notes: The quadratic nonlinear optical coefficient in the AlGaAs system has been systematically measured as a function of the alloy composition at the fundamental wavelength of 1.064 μm by the method of reflected harmonics. The harmonic waves from the thin-film samples are analyzed considering various interferences including multiple reflections. The experimental results show a reduction of the magnitude of the second-harmonic coefficient with increasing Al content in the AlGaAs system. This tendency is consistent with Miller's rule.

    Notes: We present unambiguous evidence for direct, nonthermal laser desorption of molecular ions from the surface of an ionic wide band gap material, single crystal MgO. Using time resolved mass spectroscopy, we measure positive ions emitted during pulsed excimer laser irradiation at 248 nm. Species observed (besides singly and doubly charged Mg) include: Mg2+, MgO+, MgO2+ , Mg2O+ and (MgO)2+. The kinetic energies determined from time of flight measurements are species dependent, nearly independent of fluence, and range from 5 to 9 eV. The ion intensities display strongly nonlinear fluence dependencies, proportional to the fluence to the nth power, where n ranges from 3 to 4. These kinetic energies and fluence dependences support a defect mediated photoelectronic desorption mechanism. Emission is attributed to molecular ion precursors adsorbed at special sites associated with surface electron traps. Emission occurs when the electron trap is photoionized via the sequential absorption of 3–4 photons. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new scheme for characterizing the quadratic optical nonlinearity of thin films grown on opaque substrates is proposed and demonstrated. This involved the measurement, as a function of the film thickness, of second-harmonic waves reflected from a film surface. The d36 coefficient of a ZnSe-on-GaAs film is estimated by this method to be 33±7 pm/V at the fundamental wavelength of 1.06 μm, which agrees reasonably well with the known value for the bulk crystal.

    Notes: Transient spectra following the v=1←0 excitation of the OH stretching mode of Brønsted acidic hydroxyl groups in normal and deuterated mordenite zeolites have been measured by a two-color picosecond pump–probe technique. When the OH and OD stretching bands were excited by resonant IR pulses, transient bleaching of the fundamental band (v=1←0) and the transient hot band (v=2←1) absorption signal were observed. For the OH and OD groups free of adsorbates, the spectral widths of the pump-induced signals were broadened by ∼4 cm−1 due to pure dephasing from the convoluted width of the pump and probe IR pulses. When the OH and OD groups were adsorbed by a Xe atom, the frequencies of the ν(OH) and ν(OD) bands shifted to lower frequency and at the same time the widths of both the transient bleaching and the transient hot band absorption were much broader than those of the isolated hydroxyl groups by the factor of more than three. Actually, the widths of the transient signals were about the same as those of the linear absorption signals. An adiabatic approximation has been employed to interpret the observed broadening/shift of the IR bands by making use of the results of DFT (density functional theory) calculations performed on a model cluster consisting of a Xe atom and an H3Si–(OH)–AlH3 substrate. The result agreed well with the observed spectral features. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: By means of tunable infrared pump–probe experiment, vibrational relaxation rates (v=1→0) of OH stretching mode of Brønsted acidic hydroxyl groups in a mordenite zeolite, which were interacting with noble gases (He, Ar, Kr, or Xe), were measured. The population lifetime, T1, decreased with the increase of the interaction with noble gases, e.g., 170 ps and 58 ps for isolated hydroxyl groups and ones interacting with Xe, respectively. Using a simple linear chain model, the mechanism for the enhancement of the relaxation rate was studied. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
