    Notes: Abstract Sapphirine-bearing rocks occur in three conformable, metre-size lenses in intrusive quartzo-feldspathic orthogneisses in the Curaçà valley of the Archaean Caraiba complex of Brazil. In the lenses there are six different sapphirine-bearing rock types, which have the following phases (each containing phlogopite in addition):A: Sapphirine, orthopyroxene;B: Sapphirine, cordierite, orthopyroxene, spinel;C: Sapphirine, cordierite;D: Sapphirine, cordierite, orthopyroxene, quartz;E: Sapphirine, cordierite, orthopyroxene, sillimanite, quartz;F: Sapphirine, cordierite, K-feldspar, quartz.Neither sapphirine and quartz nor orthopyroxene and sillimanite have been found in contact, however. During mylonitization, introduction of silica into the three quartz-free rocks (which represent relict protolith material) gave rise to the three cordierite and quartz-bearing rocks. Stable parageneses in the more magnesian rocks were sapphirine–orthopyroxene and sapphirine–cordierite. In more iron-rich rocks, sapphirine–cordierite, sapphirine-cordierite–sillimanite, cordierite–sillimanite, sapphirine–cordierite–spinel–magnetite and quartz–cordierite–orthopyroxene were stable. The iron oxide content in sapphirine of the six rocks increases from an average of 2.0 to 10.5 wt % (total Fe as FeO) in the order: C,F–A,D–B,E. With increase in Fe there is an increase in recalculated Fe2O3 in sapphirine.The four rock types associated with the sapphirine-bearing lenses are:I: Orthopyroxene, cordierite, biotite, quartz, feldspar tonalitic to grandioritic gneiss;II: Biotite, quartz, feldspar gneiss;III: Orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, hornblende, plagioclase meta-norite;IV: Biotite, orthopyroxene, quartz, feldspar, garnet, cordierite, sillimanite granulite gneiss.The stable parageneses in type IV are orthopyroxene–cordierite–quartz, garnet–sillimanite–quartz and garnet–cordierite–sillimanite.Geothermobarometry suggests that the associated host rocks equilibrated at 720–750°C and 5.5–6.5 kbar. Petrogenetic grids for the FMASH and FMAFSH (FeO–MgO–Al2O3–Fe2O3–SiO2–H2O) model systems indicate that sapphirine-bearing assemblages without garnet were stabilized by a high Fe3+ content and a high XMg= (Mg/ (Mg+Fe2+)) under these P–T conditions.

    Notes: Abstract We investigate the contribution of gravitationally bound subsystems to the potential energy of systems of galaxies. We derive a statistical correction factor to the virial mass using Holmberg's observed frequency function of multiple galaxies. It is of the order of ten for groups of galaxies and negligible for rich clusters. However, we emphasize that an individual treatment is necessary. As an illustration we calculate the contribution to the binding energy by observed binary galaxies in the de Vaucouleurs groups 48 and 49, and the Coma Cluster. In all three cases a single double galaxy removes the virial mass paradox. We conclude that corrections for subclustering are substantial in stability analyses of systems of galaxies, that they can remove easily mass discrepancies of the order of ten in groups and rich clusters, and that they should be made individually and not statistically.

    Notes: Abstract Starting from the argument that the density wave theory of spiral structure is incompatible with the existence of a stationary very hot extended component of the interstellar gas, we develop a cyclic model, in which an interstellar gas of a temperature around 104 K is heated to roughly 106 K by type II supernovae resulting from the enhanced star formation triggered by the density wave, and cools down again to 104 K after the supernova activity subsides to be ready for shock compression in the next sweep of the density wave pattern. The time scales for heating by supernovae and subsequent cooling turn out to be consistent with current density wave theory. The scenario proposed is corroborated by recent results on cosmic ray composition and γ-ray observations.

    Notes: Abstract In the first part of the paper the known results on the gravitational interaction of a massive black hole with the surrounding stars in a galactic nucleus are discussed. The tidal disruption of stars in close encounters with a black hole is reviewed. Expressions for the flux of stars on a black hole are given, taking into account energy and angular momentum diffusion of stellar orbits. The scenario of star disruption and accretion of the released stellar matter is depicted. The growth of a black hole in a typical galactic nucleus on account of gas accretion from disrupted stars is discussed. A comparison with the upper limit to the luminosity of the nucleus of our Galaxy puts rather severe constraints on the mass of a hypothetical black hole at the galactic centre. Possible mechanisms preventing the formation and growth of black holes in normal galactic nuclei are discussed. The second part of the paper (Section 8) deals with the hypothesis that massive black holes are the primary energy sources in active galaxies and quasars. The luminosity requirements of bright quasars and weak Seyferts can probably be accounted for in such a model, but there are difficulties in explaining the intermediate range. Mass ejection from Seyferts and quasars is not a severe problem. The same applies to the spectrum. A much more serious objection is the observed periodic and quasi-periodic variability. Another unsatisfactory feature of this hypothesis is that one needs two different evolutionary tracks for quasars and active galaxies, and for normal galaxies.
