    Notes: Sm2Fe17Nx is of considerable current interest as a permanent-magnet material because of its enhanced Curie temperature and uniaxial anisotropy. The electronic structures of Sm2Fe17Nx for x=0 and x∼2.6 have been studied with photoemission and spin-polarized calculations. The materials are prepared by arc melting and nitrogen is introduced by ion implantation. The nitrogen concentration is quantified with Auger electron spectroscopy. The Sm 4f electrons with binding energies between 6 and 10 eV are investigated with resonant photoemission using photon energies near 140 eV. The major features of ultra-violet photoemission spectra include the Fe 3d band with a strong peak at 0.8 eV and a small peak at 2.9 eV below the Fermi energy which agree quite well with the theoretical density of states calculation. The modification of the electronic structure with nitrogen concentration is studied to understand the effect of nitrogen addition on the magnetic properties.

    Notes: The electronic structures of NdFe11Ti, NdCo10V2, and YCo10Cr2 have been studied with photoemission and spin-polarized calculations. The changes in these electronic structures upon nitrogenation have also been investigated. In the Fe compound, the Fe 3d states dominate the calculated density of states near the Fermi-edge, and the N(2p) peak is evident at around 6.3 eV. There is no shift in Fe 3d peaks visible in these compounds upon nitrogenation. Other than small energy shifts in the peak positions, there is an overall agreement between experimental data and the calculated density of states. The calculated density of states in the local-density approximation for YCo10V2 is broadened to account for the well-known many-body effects and compared with the photoemission data.

    Notes: A series of granular Nix (SiO2)100−x thin films have been prepared by rf sputtering with nickel concentrations between 60 and 90 at. %. The temperature dependence of the resistance is strongly composition dependent. In films with Ni concentrations below 70%, the resistance increases as the temperature decreases, but shows a crossover to a weaker temperature dependence below about 1 K. The magnetoresistance of these materials is small and negative in applied magnetic fields up to 6 T. The temperature dependence of the resistance and the small magnetoresistance indicate that films with Ni concentrations near 66% may be useful for thermometry over a wide range of temperatures.

    Notes: The development of a novel static Fourier-transform spectrometer based on two Wollaston prisms, two polarizers, and a compact two-dimensional detector array is described. The wavelength calibration is fixed by the geometry of the prisms and the detector array and is therefore inherently stable. The Wollaston prisms are fabricated from materials with opposite sign of birefringence which gives a significantly increased field of view compared with existing Wollaston prism based Fourier-transform spectrometers. The spectrometer operates in the visible region of the spectrum, has a resolution of 350 cm−1, an aperture of 6×4.6 mm, and a field of view of ±10°. The optical assembly is interfaced to a laptop computer resulting in a rugged, portable instrument with no moving parts. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The electronic structures of YFe12−xMoxNy , where x=1.0, 2.0 and y=0, 0.7, have been studied with photoemission and spin-polarized calculations. The peak near the Fermi level in the energy distribution curves (EDC) becomes successively broader with larger Mo concentration. The features in the calculated density of state at 1.3 and 2.7 eV are not readily seen in the EDC, and this may be due to lifetime effects in these compounds. Finally, changes in Curie temperature (Tc) with the change of N or Mo concentration are compared with prediction of the theory of Mohn and Wohlfarth. Reasonable agreement is obtained in the N case but not in the Mo case, the latter most likely due to hybridization of Fe and Mo d bands.

    Notes: Abstract The time during which pollen development is most sensitive to chilling was investigated. Five cultivars of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) bearing flower buds at different stages of development were kept at 7°C for 1 week under 12-h light periods, during which time growth stopped. After returning the plants to minimum temperatures of 18°C, the presence of chromatin in the pollen was assessed daily as the flowers reached anthesis. The results suggested that there are two stages of acute sensitivity to cold during pollen development, each of which results in cold-stressed plants having pollen empty of chromatin. The first and most sensitive stage is about 11.2 d (SE = 0.3 d) before anthesis, and this is followed by a second stage of sensitivity about 5.6±0.2 d before anthesis. Flowers that had wholly developed under simulated natural temperatures that decreased diurnally from a maximum of 18°C to a minimum of 7°C also had defective pollen, but pollen of normal appearance was regained within 14°d on return to higher temperatures. Plants of L. esculentum, and a form (LA 1363) of the wild species L. hirsutum from high altitudes in the Andes, as well as F1 and F3 generations of their hybrid, were grown to the flowering stage at an altitude of 600 m in Hawaii and then grown for a further 30°d at 2000 m, where night temperature was below 10°C. The high altitude environment severely affected the quality of pollen produced and its release from the stamen in L. esculentum, but not in L. hirsutum LA 1363. The results with the hybrids suggested that such tropical mountain environments can be used as a natural phytotron in the selection of chilling resistance that is only expressed in the mature plant.
