Description:
Enterovirus 71 is a picornavirus associated with fatal neurological illness in infants and young children. Here, we report the crystal structure of enterovirus 71 and show that, unlike in other enteroviruses, the "pocket factor," a small molecule that stabilizes the virus, is partly exposed on the floor of the "canyon." Thus, the structure of antiviral compounds may require a hydrophilic head group designed to interact with residues at the entrance of the pocket.〈br /〉〈br /〉〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3448362/" target="_blank"〉〈img src="https://static.pubmed.gov/portal/portal3rc.fcgi/4089621/img/3977009" border="0"〉〈/a〉 〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3448362/" target="_blank"〉This paper as free author manuscript - peer-reviewed and accepted for publication〈/a〉〈br /〉〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Plevka, Pavel -- Perera, Rushika -- Cardosa, Jane -- Kuhn, Richard J -- Rossmann, Michael G -- AI11219/AI/NIAID NIH HHS/ -- R37 AI011219/AI/NIAID NIH HHS/ -- RR007707/RR/NCRR NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2012 Jun 8;336(6086):1274. doi: 10.1126/science.1218713.
