    Notes: Two-dimensional (2D) fifth-order Raman spectroscopy is a coherent spectroscopy that can be used as a structural tool, in a manner analogous to 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) but with much faster time scale. By including the effect of dipole-induced dipole interactions in the molecular polarizability, it is shown that 2D Raman experiments can be used to extract distances between coupled dipoles, and thus elucidate structural information on a molecular level. The amplitude of cross peaks in the 2D Raman spectrum arising from dipole-induced dipole interactions is related to the distance between the two dipoles (r) and the relative orientation of the dipoles. In an isotropic sample with randomly distributed dipole orientations, such as a liquid, the cross peak amplitude scales as r−6. In an anisotropic sample such as a solid, where the orientational averaging effects do not nullify the leading order contribution, the amplitude scales as r−3. These scaling relationships have analogy to the dipole coupling relationships that are observed in solid state and liquid 2D NMR measurements. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new experiment of frequency-domain coherent two-dimensional Raman scattering is theoretically proposed. By using three fields whose wave vectors and frequencies are independently controlled, one can measure the nonlinear Raman responses in either gas or condensed phases. The connection to the time-domain femtosecond two-dimensional Raman spectroscopy is completely established. By considering several limiting cases in detail, it is found that from the coherent 2D Raman scattering spectrum one can obtain quantitative information on the anharmonicity, anharmonic mode coupling, and polarizability coupling. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have obtained Nth-order response functions for a two-level system described by displaced anharmonic potential surfaces coupled to a heat bath. The anharmonicity of the potentials has been taken into account as a perturbation of harmonic potentials. The heat-bath was assumed to be an ensemble of harmonic oscillators. Coupling between the two-level system and the bath was assumed to be bilinear. The calculations were done analytically using the Liouville-space generating functional, which had been obtained by way of the path-integral approach. The response functions have been defined in terms of line-shape functions with these line-shape functions being expressed in terms of the bath spectral density and the temperature. We have carried out model calculations of the first-, third-, and fifth-order optical processes for various parameters of anharmonicity to show that anharmonicity plays a minor role in linear absorption, impulsive pump–probe, and photon echo experiments, but plays a major role, in some cases, in fifth-order two-dimensional resonant spectroscopy which is proposed in this paper. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We reformulate the theory of simple liquids in a field theoretical way by taking into account the triplet potential wijk, in addition to the external potential ui and the pair potential vij. The innovation here is the inversion method and the on-shell expansion which are the building blocks of a novel use of Legendre transformation developed in field theory. By the inversion method, we renormalize the theory in terms of one-, two-, and three-particle densities, and present a diagrammatic representation for a thermodynamical functional, which is the entropy except for a trivial constant, in terms of renormalized variables. In other words, we present an expression for the entropy in terms of only one-, two-, and three-particle densities: the n-particle density where n≥4 does not appear in the expression. The on-shell condition, which is a starting point of the on-shell expansion, of the thermodynamical functional thus obtained (the entropy) leads to a set of three self-consistent equations for one-, two-, and three-particle densities. Through one of the self-consistent equations, we can systematically improve the Kirkwood's superposition approximation for the three-particle density. The on-shell conditions for other thermodynamical functionals, also obtained in this article, are found to be extentions of various well-known equations in the theory of simple liquids. The formulation presented here is complementary to the conventional re-summation techniques for renormalization of diagrams. In the present formulation, we do not have to care about the topological structure of diagrams, often characterized by the irreducibility of diagrams. Instead, by a perturbative calculation, we can automatically single out the diagrams with the topological structure predicted by the re-summation techniques. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract. Specificities of three mouse major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules, Kb, Db, and Ld, were analyzed by positional scanning using combinatorial peptide libraries. The result of the analysis was used to create a scoring program to predict MHC-binding peptides in proteins. The capacity of the scoring was then challenged with a number of peptides by comparing the prediction with the experimental binding. The score and the experimental binding exhibited a linear correlation but with substantial deviations of data points. Statistically, for approximately 80% of randomly chosen peptides, MHC-binding capacity could be predicted within one log concentration of peptides for a half-maximal binding. Known cytotoxic T-lymphocyte epitope peptides could be predicted, with a few exceptions. In addition, frequent findings of MHC-binding peptides with incomplete or no anchor amino acid(s) suggested a substantial bias introduced by natural antigen processing in peptide selection by MHC class I molecules.
