Notes: Abstract— This paper reviews the stress intensity factor, limit load, compliance and J-integral functions for a centre cracked tensile (CCT) specimen available in the literature. Compliance and J-integral functions are derived from the optimum stress intensity factor and limit load solutions. The functions are compared with the results obtained from two-dimensional finite element analyses of the specimen. The finite element results have confirmed the accuracy of the compliance and limit load functions available in the literature and suggest that the unloading compliance technique, based on crack mouth opening displacement, could be developed for a CCT specimen. Non-linear finite element analyses have shown that J can be estimated from the measured load versus load-point displacement behaviour providing a/W≥ 0.5

Notes: Abstract— Anderson and Dodds have recently introduced a test specimen size requirement in the transition regime which they suggest must be satisfied for the cleavage fracture resistance to be size independent. This paper assesses the implications of imposing the size requirement in fracture toughness testing standards. It is shown that imposing the size requirement can lead to a size dependence in fracture toughness data. This observation raises the general question of whether even existing size requirements for the lower shelf and upper shelf regimes are capable of giving size independent data.

Notes: The ESIS recommendations for determining the fracture resistance of ductile materials make use of an offset power law to evaluate the best fit curve to crack growth fracture resistance data. Evaluation of the offset power law requires the use of non-linear regression analysis, although an iterative linear regression analysis can be used if the data are transformed by taking logarithms. The two analyses are compared with a proposed alternative formulation for the offset power law which can be evaluated using an iterative linear regression analysis without the need to transform the data. Confidence limits are evaluated for the J-Δa data of two steels and are shown to depend on the analysis procedures.

Notes: Abstract— The multiple specimen technique was developed to measure the crack growth fracture resistance of a through axial crack in a pressurised pipe and the results compared with data measured from test specimens. The comparison indicates that there is no significant difference between pipe and specimen behaviour. The results are also compared with elastic-plastic three-dimensional finite element analyses of the pipe and the R6 failure assessment curve. Reasonably good agreement was found between the experimental results and finite element analyses. The experimental results all lie outside the material specific failure assessment curve of the R6 structural integrity assessment procedure.

Notes: Abstract— The EGF Working Party on Fracture Mechanics Testing Standards has written a draft ECF Procedure for determining the crack growth fracture resistance of ductile materials. either in terms of the J-integral or the crack tip opening displacement. Methods are also given for deriving J and δ fracture parameters related to initiation of crack growth. The multiple specimen method is taken as the reference method. Several single specimen techniques are described in Appendices. The EGF Procedure is currently being validated by an experimental round robin.

Notes: Abstract— Two methods are given in this paper for describing the dependence of fracture toughness on temperature in the transition regime. The first method estimates fracture toughness at, or close to, the onset of stable tearing prior to cleavage fracture. The second method uses a statistical model to describe both initiation and cleavage fracture toughness in terms of stable tearing and specimen thickness. The procedures are illustrated using unirradiated fracture toughness data from the US Heavy Section Steel Irradiation Program 5th Series.

Notes: Abstract— An experimental and analytical investigation has been performed to examine the effect of concurrent fatigue cycling and stable tearing on the crack growth fracture resistance of EN3A steel at 360°C. The steel was tested in the as-received and hardened conditions, hardening being achieved by pre-cracking at a load comparable to the elastic limit of the test specimens. For each condition of the steel, resistance curves are obtained both with and without concurrent fatigue cycling.A significant increase in the crack growth rates occurred as a result of concurrent fatigue cycling. The rates are in reasonably close agreement with the values predicted from the sum of the fatigue crack growth and stable tearing components. The J-estimation formula of Ainsworth is used to demonstrate that there is no interaction between stable tearing and fatigue in the tests for the steel in the as-received condition.

Notes: Abstract An experimental investigation into the fracture behaviour of 1 Cr Mo V compact tension specimens is described. The plane strain fracture toughness of 64.2 MN/m3/2 is compared with the fracture toughness determined from compact tension specimens of thickness 50 mm, 25 mm, 13 mm, 6 mm, and 3 mm. With the 13 mm and 6 mm thickness compact tension specimens pop-in steps occurred in the load-displacement records associated with the formation of thumbnail shaped cracks. Following the pop-in steps much higher maximum loads were attained prior to complete fast fracture. A three-dimensional elastic finite element analysis of an observed thumbnail shaped crack indicated that the stress intensity factor was less than that of the initial straight crack. Using this result it is shown that the fracture toughness at the maximum load was in agreement with the fracture toughness at the pop-in step of the load-displacement test record and the plane strain fracture toughness.
