Description: Darwin's finches, inhabiting the Galapagos archipelago and Cocos Island, constitute an iconic model for studies of speciation and adaptive evolution. Here we report the results of whole-genome re-sequencing of 120 individuals representing all of the Darwin's finch species and two close relatives. Phylogenetic analysis reveals important discrepancies with the phenotype-based taxonomy. We find extensive evidence for interspecific gene flow throughout the radiation. Hybridization has given rise to species of mixed ancestry. A 240 kilobase haplotype encompassing the ALX1 gene that encodes a transcription factor affecting craniofacial development is strongly associated with beak shape diversity across Darwin's finch species as well as within the medium ground finch (Geospiza fortis), a species that has undergone rapid evolution of beak shape in response to environmental changes. The ALX1 haplotype has contributed to diversification of beak shapes among the Darwin's finches and, thereby, to an expanded utilization of food resources.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Lamichhaney, Sangeet -- Berglund, Jonas -- Almen, Markus Sallman -- Maqbool, Khurram -- Grabherr, Manfred -- Martinez-Barrio, Alvaro -- Promerova, Marta -- Rubin, Carl-Johan -- Wang, Chao -- Zamani, Neda -- Grant, B Rosemary -- Grant, Peter R -- Webster, Matthew T -- Andersson, Leif -- England -- Nature. 2015 Feb 19;518(7539):371-5. doi: 10.1038/nature14181. Notes: We report on the first nondestructive measurement of the chemical and physical characteristics of the interface between bulk SiO2 and thick aluminum films. Both x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrical measurements of unannealed, resistively evaporated Al films on thermal SiO2 indicate an atomically abrupt interface. Post metallization annealing (PMA) at 450 °C induces reduction of the SiO2 by the aluminum, at a rate consistent with the bulk reaction rate. The XPS measurement is performed from the SiO2 side after the removal of the Si substrate with XeF2 gas and thinning of the SiO2 layer with HF:ETOH. This represents a powerful new approach to the study of metal-insulator and related interfaces.

Notes: This paper discusses a mathematical model governing the galvanic corrosion phenomenon and surveys the research efforts which have been applied to find a solution to the above problem. The authors classify these techniques into three categories. The first is the finite difference method (FDM), the second is the finite element method (FEM) and the last is the boundary element method (BEM).

Notes: This paper describes the proper external potential formulation of a cathodic protection system employed for corrosion prevention of structures in infinite electrolytes. The boundary condition associated with the mathematical formulation is not of the standard type encountered in hydrodynamic, electrostatic or heat transfer applications. The developed mathematical model is discretized by the boundary element technique, which is then solved iteratively by the Newton-Raphson method.

Notes: The mathematical modelling of the electrodeposition phenomenon leads to a linear elliptic partial differential equation subject to non-linear mixed boundary contitions. This is complicated further by the fact that the domain under consideration is evolving with time.Owing to the nature of the mathematical model, the boundary element method is a very efficient numerical technique for the solution of such problems. The authors report their numerical simulation of the above problem which also has applications in the cathodic protection systems for corrosion prevention.

Notes: The purpose of this article is to review the publications dealing with the application of finite elements in the thermoforming process. Although no attempt has been made to discuss the theoretical aspects of these publications, their general methodologies have been presented. The paper is particularly aimed at readers who are seeking an overall view of the subject and possibly interested in acquiring a CAD system for thermoforming technology.

Notes: In this paper, the combination of the h-method (mesh refinement) and the r-method (mesh redistribution) is employed to solve the Laplace equation using the boundary element procedure. The key in this approach is to derive on upper bound for the residual associated with the boundary element solution and minimize this bound with respect to an unknown grading function. The latter part is achieved by employing techniques of the calculus of variations.
