    Notes: Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies performed at room tempertaure in Mn2+ doped Cs2NaYCl6 single crystals (elpasolite) showed that the Mn2+ ion occupies a tetragonal symmetry site in the cubic crystalline lattice. In contrast with previous results on elpasolite, where trivalent rare earth impurities occupy Oh sites, and divalent europium impurities occupy trigonal sites, this work reports, the first evidence of an impurity in a tetragonal symmetry site in this host with principal axes along 〈100〉 crystallographic directions. The unusually large total splitting of the EPR spectrum (∼10 000×10−4 cm−1) is discussed in order to establish a tentative model for the site.

    Notes: The objective of this study was to characterize grain yield and adaptation of barley cultivars released in recent decades in north-eastern Spain. Ten six-rowed and 10 two-rowed barley genotypes were grown in eight environments. Mean yields varied among environments between 1.7 and 5.8 tha−1. New releases showed higher mean yields and were specifically adapted to nonlimiting growing conditions. The average genetic advances were estimated as 40.7 and 32.9 kg ha−1 years−1 for two- and six-rowed genotypes, respectively, in the four most productive environments. Old genotypes, with lower overall grain yields, were specifically adapted to the poorer sites. A negative genetic gain, estimated as -14.8kg ha−1 years−1. was reorded for six-rowed culiivars in the four poorest sites. No significant association was observed between heading date and year of release. Variations in carbon isotope discrimination (Δ) were examined to assess whether changes in adaptation could be partially explained by shifts in the genoiypic transpiration efficiency (TE) over time, in the most favourable environments, new releases showed the highest grain yields and carbon isotope discrimination values (Δ). By contrast, older cultivars had constitutively? lower Δs and therefore higher TEs. These results suggest a genetic association between low TE and yield potential and specific adaptation to stress-free conditions so that selection for yield under favourable conditions could have resulted in an indirect downward genetic shift in the TE of modern cultivars.

    Notes: Divalent manganese has been incorporated in both single crystals and powders of the zircon-structure hosts LuPO4, YPO4, and ScPO4. The single-crystal specimens were grown by slowly cooling a Pb2P2O7 flux from 1360 °C, and finely divided powders of these materials were also prepared using a molten urea precipitation technique. Electron paramagnetic resonance studies have shown that tetragonal symmetry Mn2+ sites are present in both single crystals and powders of ScPO4 and LuPO4 but are not present in either YPO4 single crystals or powders. An orthorhombic symmetry spectrum was observed for Mn2+ in single crystals of all three hosts and in YPO4 powders. Orthorhombic spectra were not found in Mn2+ doped powders of ScPO4 and LuPO4. In the case of the orthorhombic-symmetry spectra, four sites were present in these tetragonal zircon-structure hosts. The sites were magnetically inequivalent but were equivalent in terms of the strength and symmetry of the crystalline electric field. The orientations of the orthorhombic-site principal axes relative to the crystallographic axes were determined in each case. The axial spin-Hamiltonian parameter b02 was found to be positive in the case of the tetragonal-symmetry sites and negative for the orthorhombic-symmetry spectra. Thermoluminescent properties of these materials were also investigated.

    Notes: An experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of rearing density on growth, metamorphosis and behavioural patterns of feeding in bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana Shaw, tadpoles. Stage 25 (Gosner) tadpoles from a single cohort were stocked at 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0 L–1 in 6-L plastic containers. A combination of phytoplankton and supplementary feed was used. There was an inverse relationship between rearing density and growth and metamorphosis above two organisms L–1. Tadpoles reared at 0.5 and 1.0 L–1 reached the metamorphic climax in 135 and 120 days, respectively, whereas more than 80% of all tadpoles reared at 4 and 8 L–1 did not metamorphose at all. Intraspecific competition appeared to be consistent among the cultured organisms regardless of the rearing density. Smaller tadpoles were displaced to sites distant from feeding points during supplementary feed addition, while no displacement was observed during phytoplankton addition. It is concluded that bullfrog tadpoles grow well at up to two organisms L–1 and that intraspecific competition is present within cultured tadpoles regardless of stocking density and may result from intrinsic genetic variability.
