    Description: The GLObal Reflectance community dataset for Imaging and optical sensing of Aquatic environments (GLORIA) includes 7,572 curated hyperspectral remote sensing reflectance measurements at 1 nm intervals within the 350 to 900 nm wavelength range. In addition, at least one co-located water quality measurement, chlorophyll a, total suspended solids, absorption by dissolved substances, and Secchi depth, is provided. The data were contributed by researchers affiliated with 53 institutions worldwide and come from 450 different water bodies, making GLORIA the de-facto state of knowledge of in situ coastal and inland aquatic optical diversity.

    Notes: Abstract Leaf growth is one of the most sensitive of plant processes to water deficits and is frequently inhibited in field crops. Plants were acclimated for 2 weeks under a moderate soil water deficit to determine whether the sensitivity of leaf growth could be altered by sustained exposure to low water potentials. Leaf growth under these conditions was less than in the controls because expansion occurred more slowly and for less of the day than in control leaves. However, acclimated leaves were able to grow at leaf water potentials (Ψ1) low enough to inhibit growth completely in control plants. This ability was associated with osmotic adjustment and maintenance of turgor in the acclimated leaves. Upon rewatering, the growth of acclimated leaves increased but was less than the growth of controls, despite higher concentrations of cell solute and greater turgor in the acclimated leaves than in controls. Therefore, factors other than turgor and osmotic adjustment limited the growth of acclimated leaves at high ψ1 Four potentially controlling factors were investigated and the results showed that acclimated leaves were less extensible and required more turgor to initiate growth than control leaves. The slow growth of acclimated leaves was not due to a decrease in the water potential gradient for water uptake, although changes in the apparent hydraulic conductivity for water transport could have occurred. It was concluded that leaf growth acclimated to low ψ1, by adjusting osmotically, and the concomitant maintenance of turgor permitted growth where none otherwise would occur. However, changes in the extensibility of the tissue and the turgor necessary to initiate growth caused generally slow growth in the acclimated leaves.

    Notes: The use of accounting to help apply the principles of scientific management to business affairs is associated with the adoption of standard costing and budgetary control. This first British industry-based study of the implementation of these calculative techniques makes use of the case study research tool to interrogate archival data relating to leading iron and steel companies. We demonstrate the adoption of standard costing and budgetary control early on (during the inter-war period) by a single economic unit, United Steel Companies Ltd, where innovation is attributed to the engineering and scientific background and US experiences of key personnel. Elsewhere, significant management accounting change occurred only with the collapse in iron and steel corporate profitability that began to become apparent in the late 1950s. The process of accounting change is addressed and the significance for our study of the notions of evolution and historical discontinuity is examined. The paper is contextualised through an assessment of initiatives from industry-based regulatory bodies and consideration of the economic circumstances and business conditions within which management accounting practices were the subject of radical revision.

    Notes: Examines aspects of local enterprise in Wales during the Industrial Revolution and seeks to place the historical experience of such within the wider debates surrounding the relationship between enterprise and economic development. Study of this period has traditionally focused attention on the discontinuity precipitated by the impact of industrialism and particularly on the development of large-scale factory production. Within Welsh history this focus has largely obscured an examination of local developments to the process of economic development, with the result that there has been no possibility for discussion of, or participation in, gradualist accounts of such development. This study seeks to demonstrate that part of the economic development experienced during the period was generated as a result of indigenous enterprise, and therefore raises the possibility of continuity within certain areas of Welsh economic development -- prior to the influx of English enterprise and capital at the end of the eighteenth century.

    Notes: The net flow in vascular and transpirational components of the grape berry water budget was evaluated during water deficits imposed at different stages of fruit development. Diurnal fluctuations in berry diameter were measured on field-grown grapevines (Vitis vinifera L. cv. Cabernet Sauvignon) by using electronic displacement transducers. Water deficits were imposed by withholding irrigation, and water potentials of mid-shoot leaves, basal stem xylem and clusters were determined with a pressure chamber. The relative net flows through pedicel xylem and phloem and through berry transpiration were estimated pre-veraison and post-veraison. The xylem functioned nearly exclusively in providing net inflow pre-veraison, while the phloem was clearly dominant post-veraison. Accordingly, the amplitude of diurnal contraction was markedly smaller post-veraison than pre-veraison. The amplitude of diurnal contraction increased dramatically with decreasing plant water status pre-veraison, yet exhibited little sensitivity to low vine water status post-veraison. Measurements of the difference in water potential between clusters and source stems did not provide evidence of a gradient that would elicit significant water movement from the cluster to the stem at any time of the day. This was true for both irrigated and non-irrigated vines, although the non-irrigated vines exhibited a smaller gradient favoring inflow throughout much of the day. The gradient for xylem water transport to the cluster was considerably smaller post-veraison than pre-veraison. The results showed that berry transpiration functioned as the primary pathway for water loss both pre- and post-veraison.

    Notes: Abstract We propose a statistical model and a technique for objective recognition of one of the most commonly cited seismicity patterns:microearthquake quiescence. We use a Poisson process model for seismicity and define a process with quiescence as one with a particular type of piece-wise constant intensity function. From this model, we derive a statistic for testing stationarity against a ‘quiescence’ alternative. The large-sample null distribution of this statistic is approximated from simulated distributions of appropriate functionals applied to Brownian bridge processes. We point out the restrictiveness of the particular model we propose and of the quiescence idea in general. The fact that there are many point processes which have neither constant nor quiescent rate functions underscores the need to test for and describe nonuniformity thoroughly. We advocate the use of the quiescence test in conjunction with various other tests for nonuniformity and with graphical methods such as density estimation. ideally these methods may promote accurate description of temporal seismicity distributions and useful characterizations of interesting patterns.

    Notes: Abstract Numerous cases of precursory seismic quiescence have been reported in recent years. Some investigators have interpreted these observations as evidence that seismic quiescence is a somewhat reliable precursor to moderate or large earthquakes. However, because failures of the pattern to predict earthquakes may not, in general, be reported, and because numerous earthquakes are not preceded by quiescence, the validity and reliability of the quiescence precursor have not been established. We have analyzed the seismicity rate prior to, and in the source region of, 37 shallow earthquakes (M 5.3–7.0) in central California and Japan for patterns of rate fluctuation, especially precursory quiescence. Nonuniformity in rate for these pre-mainshock sequences is relatively high, and numerous intervals with significant (p〈0.10) extrema in rate are observed in some of the sequences. In other sequences, however, the rate remains within normal limits up to the time of the mainshock. Overall, in terms of an observational basis for intermediate-term earthquake prediction, no evidence is found in the cases studied for a systematic, widespread or reliable pattern of quiescence prior to the mainshocks. In earthquake sequences comprising full seismic cycles for 5 sets of (M 3.7–5.1) repeat earthquakes on the San Andreas fault near Bear Valley, California, the seismicity rates are found to be uniform. A composite of the estimated rate fluctuations for the sequences, normalized to the length of the seismic cycle, reveals a weak pattern of a low rate in the first third of the cycle, and a high rate in the last few months. While these observations are qualitative, they may represent weak expressions of physical processes occurring in the source region over the seismic cycle. Re-examination of seismicity rate fluctuations in volumes along the creeping section of the San Andreas fault specified by Wyss and Burford (1985) qualitatively confirms the existence of low-rate intervals in volumes 361, 386, 382, 372 and 401. However, only the quiescence in volume 386 is found by the present study to be statistically significant.

    Notes: Abstract Water relations dynamics during simulated sunflecks at high (36°C) and medium (27°C) temperatures and high and low vapour pressure deficits beween leaf and air (VPD) were studied on shade-grown Piper auritum H.B. & K. plants, a pioneer tree, common in gaps and clearings of tropical rain forests. The leaves of P. auritum wilt rapidly when exposed to high light. Exposure to high VPD and high light caused substantial and rapid dehydration of leaves. Dehydration could be prevented under high humidity irrespective of temperature. Water stored in leaf cells served as initial source for transpiration upon high light exposure. This effect increased with increasing VPD and temperature. The pronounced decrease in leaf water content over time in high light caused a rapid decrease in leaf water potential (Ψl) and a concomitant increase in water potential gradient (ΔΨ/Δx) between trunk and leaf, yet the high leaf elasticity (small bulk elastic modulus, ε) allowed turgor maintenance under most conditions. Under high VPD and high temperature, stomata remained open and ΔΨ/Δx frequently exceeded 0.95 MPa · m−1, the cavitation-inducing threshold (ΔΨ/Δx cav) causing high rates of acoustic emissions from stems and leaf petioles and leading to concomitant losses in hydraulic conductance per leaf area (k l). At medium temperature (high VPD), stomatal closure contained xylem embolism by keeping ΔΨ/Δx at or below this threshold. We argue that wilting substantially contributes to creating a sufficient driving force for water uptake from the soil, and reducing the VPD (through a decrease in radiation load and thus leaf temperature) to avoid excessive dehydration.

    Notes: Abstract Morphology, water relations, and xylem anatomy of high-light (sun)- and low-light (shade)-grown Vitis vinifera L. shoots were studied to determine the effects of shading on the hydraulic conductance of the pathway for water flow from the roots to the leaves. Shade shoots developed leaf area ratios (leaf area: plant dry weight) that were nearly threefold greater than sun shoots. Water-potential gradients (ΔΨ·m−1) in the shoot xylem accounted for most of the ΔΨ·m−1 between soil and shoot apex at low and high transpiration rates in both sun and shade shoots, but the gradients were two- to fourfold greater in shade-grown plants. Low light reduced xylem conduit number in petioles, but had an additional slight effect on conduit diameter in internodes. The hydraulic conductance per unit length (Kh) and the specific hydraulic conductivity (ks, i.e. Kh per xylem cross-sectional area) of internodes, leaf petioles, and leaf laminae at different developmental stages leaf plastochron index was calculated from measurements of water potential and water flow in intact plants, from flow through excised organs, and from vessel and tracheid lumen diameters according to Hagen-Poiseuille's equation. For all methods and conductance parameters, the propensity to transport water to sink leaves was severalfold greater in internodes than in petioles. The Kh and ks increased logarithmically until growth ceased, independent of treatment and measurement method, and increased further in pressurized-flow experiments and Hagen-Poiseuille predictions. However, the increase was less in shade internodes than in sun internodes. Mature internodes of shade-grown plants had a two- to fourfold reduced Kh and significantly lower ks than sun internodes. Except very early in development, leaf lamina conductance and ks from shade-grown plants was also reduced. The strong reduction in Kh with only a slight reduction in leaf area (17% of sun shoots) in the shade shoots indicated a decoupling of water-transport capacity from the transpirational surface supplied by that capacity. This decoupling resulted in strongly reduced leaf specific conductivities and Huber values for both internodes and petioles, which may increase the likelihood of cavitation under conditions of high evaporative demand or soil drought.

In addition, at least one co-located water quality measurement of chlorophyll a, total suspended solids, absorption by dissolved substances, and Secchi depth, is provided. The data were contributed by researchers affiliated with 59 institutions worldwide and come from 450 different water bodies, making GLORIA the de-facto state of knowledge of in situ coastal and inland aquatic optical diversity. Each measurement is documented with comprehensive methodological details, allowing users to evaluate fitness-for-purpose, and providing a reference for practitioners planning similar measurements. We provide open and free access to this dataset with the goal of enabling scientific and technological advancement towards operational regional and global RSWQ monitoring.
