Notes: The effect of ion implantation leading to contamination and diffusion of lithiumimpurity in ZnO ceramics substrates was investigated. The diffusion coefficients of Li in theimplanted ZnO annealed at 1000 and 850ºC were in good agreement with those in thenon-implanted ZnO. At 700ºC, Li diffusion in the implanted ZnO was strongly enhanced. Ourresults show that the defects introduced by the implantation enhance the impurity diffusion atlow temperature annealing

Notes: An instrumental technique for DAFS measurements which can provide site-specific information is proposed. The approach uses (i) focusing optics with parabolic mirrors and a double-crystal monochromator, (ii) the Laue and Bragg settings and (iii) data collection by the image-plate Weissenberg method. Six image exposures are recorded per plate at five intrinsic energies and one reference energy. The single-crystal measurements were performed at the Co K-absorption edge, and the 200, 220 and 311 reflections of CoO and 511 and 911 reflections of Co3O4 were used for analysis. The regression analysis of χ(k), Fourier transforms of k3χ(k) and back-Fourier filtering have been performed.

Notes: Abstract A crosscorrelational method of action potential trains has been proposed, based on information theory. Two information theoretic quantities, mutual information and channel capacity, were calculated from a pair of action potential trains for detecting a crosscorrelation and estimating synaptic connectivity. The method was compared with conventional ones, using action potential trains obtained by the simulation of a neuron model. This method was shown to have the advantages to more easily find a weak but significant crosscorrelation and to give better estimation of synaptic connectivity independent of the firing probability of a presynaptic neuron.

Notes: The hydroxamate-based artificial siderophore that contains terminated-amine group wasnewly synthesized. This artificial siderophore formed stable complex with FeIII ion and highbio-activities. The FeIII-artificial siderophore complex was attached onto the glass substrate surface bystepwise self-assembling method. The obtained artificial siderophore-modified glass substrateadsorbed the Gram-positive bacterium Microbacterium. flavescens. The Gram-negative bacteriumEscherichia. coli was not adsorbed. The artificial siderophore-modified glass substrates indicated theselective adsorption of microorganisms

Notes: Abstract The nature of a very high-dimensional chaotic attractor in an infinite-dimensional phase space is examined for the purpose of studying the relationships between the physical processes occurring in the real space and the characteristics of high-dimensional attractor in the phase space. We introduce two complementary bases from which the attractor is observed, one the Lyapunov basis composed of the Lyapunov vectors and the another the Fourier basis composed of the Fourier modes. We introduce the “exterior” subspaces on the basis of the Lyapunov vectors and observe the chaotic motion projected onto these exteriors. It is shown that a certain statistical property of the projected motion changes markedly as the exterior subspace “goes out” of the attractor. The origin of such a phenomenon is attributed to more fundamental features of our attractor, which become manifest when the attractor is observed from the Lyapunov basis. A counterpart of the phenomenon can be observed also on the Fourier basis because there is a statistical one-to-one correspondence between the Lyapunov vectors and the Fourier modes. In particular, a statistical property of the high-pass filtered time series reflects clearly the difference between the interior and the exterior of the attractor.

Notes: Two hexafluoro-substituted aromatic polyimides, 6FDA-p-PDA and 6FDA-4,4′-ODA, were synthesized. The influence of some synthetic conditions on physical properties and gas permeabilities of the 6FDA polyimide membranes were studied. Gas permeabilities and permselectivities of six different gases for the homogeneous films have been determined at 15-35°C and at pressures up to 10 atm. 6FDA polyimide composite membranes with asymmetric structure were prepared by the solution-casting method. The membranes showed exceptionally high permeation fluxes and permselectivities. No capability deterioration of asymmetric membrane was observed during 19 days operation with pure gases. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: We examined the influence of polyaniline (PAn)'s unit sequence and doping with low molecular weight dopants or polymer dopants on permeation property. It was found that CO2 permeability was increased by the formation of a quinonediimine unit in PAn with the oxidation. CO2 sorption amount of PAn was decreased by oxidation. The increase of CO2 permeability with oxidation, therefore, resulted from the increase of diffusivity, which was attributable to morphological variation by the increase of a quinonediimine unit. The permselectivity of PAn films was found to be remarkably improved by doping. In particular, the selectivity value of the PAn film doped with polyvinyl sulphonic acid as a polymer dopant went up to over 2,000. This remarkable increase of selectivity was found to result in the increase of selectivity, depending on diffusivity. It was also found that the permselectivity of the PAn film doped by polymer dopants was surpassed, as compared with that doped by low molecular dopants. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Description: Mice deficient in the transcriptional repressor B-cell CLL/lymphoma 6 (Bcl6) exhibit similar T helper 2 (TH2) immune responses as patients with allergic diseases. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying Bcl6-directed regulation of TH2 cytokine genes remain unclear. We identified multiple Bcl6/STAT binding sites (BSs) in TH2 cytokine gene loci. We found that Bcl6 is modestly associated with the BSs, and it had no significant effect on cytokine production in newly differentiated TH2 cells. Contrarily, in memory TH2 (mTH2) cells derived from adaptively transferred TH2 effectors, Bcl6 outcompeted STAT5 for binding to TH2 cytokine gene loci, particularlyInterleukin4(Il4) loci, and attenuated GATA binding protein 3 (GATA3) binding to highly conserved intron enhancer regions in mTH2 cells. Bcl6 suppressed cytokine production epigenetically in mTH2 cells to negatively tune histone acetylation at TH2 cytokine gene loci, includingIl4loci. In addition, IL-33, a pro-TH2 cytokine, diminished Bcl6’s association with loci to which GATA3 recruitment was inversely augmented, resulting in altered IL-4, but not IL-5 and IL-13, production in mTH2 cells but no altered production in newly differentiated TH2 cells. Use of a murine asthma model that generates high levels of pro-TH2 cytokines, such as IL-33, suggested that the suppressive function of Bcl6 in mTH2 cells is abolished in severe asthma. These findings indicate a role of the interaction between TH2-promoting factors and Bcl6 in promoting appropriate IL-4 production in mTH2 cells and suggest that chronic allergic diseases involve the TH2-promoting factor-mediated functional breakdown of Bcl6, resulting in allergy exacerbation.
