    Notes: The magnetic properties of a stoichiometric Pr2NiO4 single crystal have been examined by means of the temperature dependence of the complex ac susceptibility and the isothermal magnetization in fields up to 200 kOe at T=4.2 K. Three separate phases have been identified and their anisotropic character has been analyzed. A collinear antiferromagnetic phase appears first between TN = 325 K and Tc1 = 115 K, where the Pr ions are polarized by an internal magnetic field. At Tc1 a first modification of the magnetic structure occurs in parallel with a structural phase transition (Bmab to P42/ncm). This magnetic transition has a first-order character and involves both the out-of-plane and the in-plane spin components (magnetic modes gx and gxcyfz, respectively). A second magnetic transition having also a first-order character is also clearly identified at Tc2 = 90 K which corresponds to a spin reorientation process (gxcyfz to cxgyaz magnetic modes). It should be noted as well that the out-of-phase component of χac shows a peak around 30 K which reflects the coexistence of both magnetic configurations in a wide temperature interval. Finally, two field-induced transitions have been observed at 4.2 K when the field is directed along the c axis. We propose that the high-field anomaly arises from a metamagnetic transition of the weak ferromagnetic component, similarly to La2CuO4.

    Notes: An inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) at two different temperatures within its liquid range is reported. The analysis of the spectra reveals the presence of a collective inelastic response throughout the explored Q-range (0.3 A(ring)−1≤Q≤2.2 A(ring)−1). The wave vector dependence of the excitation energies ("dispersion relations'') is investigated by means of the analysis of the measured spectral intensities in terms of a phenomenological (viscoelastic) model. In order to help with the analysis of the experimental intensities a molecular dynamics study has been carried out. The analysis of the calculated dynamical factors is also performed within the same approximation and the results are tested by comparison with those stemming from the experimental observations.

    Notes: The spectrum of collective excitations in liquid sulphur dioxide at two thermodynamic states has been measured by neutron triple-axis spectroscopy for momentum transfer ranges of 0.35≤Q≤2.0 A(ring)−1. Well-resolved inelastic peaks indicating the presence of propagating modes are found for Q values below 0.5 A(ring)−1 at T=266 K and below 0.7 A(ring)−1 at T=210 K. A precise value for the hydrodynamic limit has been found in both cases and the measured "dispersion relations'' are discussed in relation to predictions made by recent theoretical approaches.

    Notes: The collective dynamics of liquid methanol-d4 is studied by means of molecular-dynamics simulation. The model potential is validated by means of lattice energy calculations and shows a very good agreement with the experimentally obtained crystal structure. Center-of-mass density and momentum fluctuations are investigated in the (Q,ω) region which is also accessible to inelastic neutron-scattering (INS) techniques. A simple viscoelastic model previously used for the analysis of INS data is tested against the dynamic structure factor computed from the simulation. A direct comparison with the INS results themselves is also made and qualitative agreement is found. Also, a tentative assignment of the peaks appearing in the current–current correlations is made on the basis of lattice-dynamics calculations for the polycrystalline low-temperature α phase.

    Notes: The longitudinal and transverse spin fluctuations in Ni have been measured below Tc by means of polarized neutron scattering in the momentum range 0.06〈q〈0.18 A(ring)−1. In transverse scans spin-wave peaks at Eq=Dq2 appear as expected from early measurements performed with unpolarized neutrons. The longitudinal magnetic scattering χL(q,E), on the other hand, is quasielastic without any signature of inelastic peaks near Eq. The q and T dependencies of χL(q,E) resemble the paramagnetic scattering above TC, i.e., the linewidth is roughly proportional to q2.5 and the integrated intensity I(q) is proportional to (q2+κ2z)−1.

    Notes: Moderate pressure techniques (P=20 kbar) have been used to prepare Tl2−xCdxMn2O7 (0≤x≤0.4) pyrochlore-like materials. The x=0.2 compound has been characterized by neutron powder diffraction, magnetic, magnetotransport, and Hall measurements. This material is ferromagnetic below TC=110 K. Both electrical resistance and magnetoresistance (MR) are enhanced with respect to stoichiometric Tl2Mn2O7, due to the drastic reduction in the number of carriers (electrons) induced by hole doping. MR(0.5 T) is higher than 106% at 120 K, and MR(9 T) is 30% at room temperature. We show that hole doped derivatives of Tl2Mn2O7 are promising candidates in which to search for large bulk magnetoresistance. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have performed magnetic and transport measurements on La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 polycrystalline pellets and thin films. We propose a model that reproduces very well the low-field and high-field magnetoresistance at low temperature. The decrease of the resistance at high fields is modeled by the opening of new conduction channels in parallel due to the ordering of Mn spins blocked at the grain surface. We found that high-field magnetoresistance is independent of grain size, at least down to 12 nm, but depends strongly on the connectivity between grains. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract— Sphere-reinforced metal-matrix composites are modelled as a three dimensional array of hexagonal cylinders, each one with a broken or intact spherical reinforcement at its centre. Using this model, the stress-strain response of the composite in uniaxial tension was obtained. A parametrical analysis of the influence of matrix and reinforcement properties as well as volume fraction on the ductility of these composites was performed. It was found that the decrease in ductility with respect to the unreinforced matrix depended mainly on the reinforcement/matrix strength ratio and on the defect distribution in the particulates.

    Notes: Abstract Gibberellins A1, A8, A20 and A29 were identified by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the pods and seeds from 5-d-old pollinated ovaries of pea (Pisum sativum cv. Alaska). These gibberellins were also identified in 4-d-old non-developing, parthenocarpic and pollinated ovaries. The level of gibberellin A1 within these ovary types was correlated with pod size. Gibberellin A1, applied to emasculated ovaries cultured in vitro, was three to five times more active than gibberellin A20. Using pollinated ovary explants cultured in vitro, the effects of inhibitors of gibberellin biosynthesis on pod growth and seed development were examined. The inhibitors retarded pod growth during the first 7 d after anthesis, and this inhibition was reversed by simultaneous application of gibberellin A3. In contrast, the inhibitors, when supplied to 4-d-old pollinated ovaries for 16 d, had little effect on seed fresh weight although they reduced the levels of endogenous gibberellins A20 and A29 in the enlarging seeds to almost zero. Paclobutrazol, which was one of the inhibitors used, is xylem-mobile and it efficiently reduced the level of seed gibberellins without being taken up into the seed. In intact fruits the pod may therefore be a source of precursors for gibberellin biosynthesis in the seed. Overall, the results indicate that gibberellin A1, present in parthenocarpic and pollinated fruits early in development, regulates pod growth. In contrast the high levels of gibberellins A20 and A29, which accumulate during seed enlargement, appear to be unnecessary for normal seed development or for subsequent germination.
